I use a master password in Firefox password manager to protect log-in details. Yet I have heard that add-ons have full access to passwords and other data. Is that true?

I use Linux Lite, Ubuntu-based (a very nice OS, by the way).

No problems before I signed up for an account to use Firefox Send. Immediately after that I started to get an annoying pop-up window asking for my master password immediately on browser start.

I want to be able to browse sites without entering a password, and I also want to continue using a master password but only for sites which require a log-in.

I deleted my Firefox account in the hopes that would fix the problem, but the pop-ups keep coming.

I tried unchecking "ask to save logins and passwords for websites" in preferences but that didn't work.

I have not deleted my saved log-ins and tried a new/clean browser because I spent a long time getting all my add-ons and log-ins set up and I don't want to have to reinstall everything, and I am concerned that if I save my profile that it will just re-install the problem.

Since the latest update (59.0.1) if you have Master Password set, Firefox can no longer access saved logins (not just my PC). Works fine with it disabled.

As per other people, the 'enter master password' box comes up when starting Firefox and can cause the whole thing to become unusable. However, the main issue appears to be that Saved Logins (both using them and saving them) has ceased working. If I remove the master password and restart Firefox, they are all available again. Master Password can be set and all is fine until I restart Firefox, whereupon they stop warking again. Same thing happening on my daughter's laptop which also just updated to 59.0.1.

Everything was hunky dory until the awful v48 update. With no other changes to the system, bookmarks are now annoyingly slow to use. If I try to bookmark this page for example, FF has to think for 2-5 seconds before I can enter tags. After saving the bookmark it freezes for another 1-3 seconds before I can do anything else. This is an awful downgrade.

There were absolutely no other changes to my setup except for the update. I didn't change any preference, install an addon, or the like. In any case, I performed a safe mode test and this makes the pauses even worse.

What else can I try? Your FF knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

How to use master password only to reveal password?

Hi,

It's a pain right now using a master password on firefox. Every time I go to a website that needs my login, Firefox ask for my master password before it will load the user/pass into the login page. If I don't use the master password, then the problem is that if I leave my computer unlock for a little bit, someone can come by and click show password in setting and it will just show the passwords without asking for the master password.

So what I want is to only use master password when I click on show password in setting, and I don't have to do anything when trying to login to a page.

This is doable at work, with their security setting for all computer and it works great. When I click show password on Firefox at work, the computer ask for my Windows login password before it would show the Firefox password. That's what I want the master password to do. Only ask for it when I click show password.

Thanks

Firefox recently updated to v59 and, as with some other users, it is (a) asking for the master password on starting up rather than on first use, and (b) losing access to my logins (there are about 200 in total). After reading other answers I have deleted two files, secmod and key4. That solves the problem the next time Firefox is used - presumably it reads the logins from key3. However, after restarting the computer and launching Firefox again, a new key4 appears in the profile and the problems above recur. (I back up my complete Firefox profile with my normal data backup, so have a 'good' copy to refer to from before the problems started).

Is there any way of permanently stopping the problem recurring - or at worst, copying the logins and 'reinstalling' them correctly into v59 (without having to write them down physically)?

I'm cross-posting this in the desktop version forums since it applies for both mobile and desktop.

I really don't understand what is the logic behind the way the password manager was implemented, and it's a major no-go for me. The purpose of a master password should be that it is asked EACH time you try to show the passwords in plain text (in the settings), not once per session (which is also very annoying since the purpose of the password manager is to prevent you from having to enter passwords).

In other words:

If I enter my master password but leave the computer turned on or my cell phone on the table without closing Firefox (which most people do), then someone can go to my setting and have a plain text version of all my passwords instantly, which is pretty bad. The other thing is that while I understand that SOME people might want to enter their master password once per session, most people don't care about this and find this actually annoying and this should be optional. This is actually beating the purpose of the password manager which is NOT to have to enter any password. They are masked, and I do not care if someone opens my browser and views my facebook. What I really care about however is that they shouldn't be able to go to my settings and have an easy access to all my passwords in plain text!

So having to enter your password every session should be an option, while having to enter your password should be mandatory each time you open the password manager itself (or at least optional!). What a major security flaw for a browser that prides itself on privacy...

I've recently found, to my surprise, that my Firefox 52.9 64bit Linux had its Master Password removed. My computer did not have anyone physically access from the time MP was enabled until it was disabled. I was out for a few hours and there was no access to my computer which is located in a rural area. In the morning I opened up FF and noticed that FF's MP was disabled. I'm very diligent at keeping my computers clean of malware. Is there a security glitch in FF 52.9? I have over 30 years of computer admin experience. Addons screencap enclosed.

Dear volunteers,.. y'all do tremendously valuable work ... adding to the wisdom of the cloud/crowd. Many times I solved a problem by just looking for postings of others who had the similar problem, but now I had to become a member of this community to ask about this problem. The only thing I could find that sort of addressed (I think??) my problem was https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499233 But I don't understand that tech-talk.

Anyways ... on July 6 the build in password manager stopped responding to my old and tested master password. The password manager just keeps asking for it... as if my password is wrong - but it is not. I have been using the same password for a few years and never changed it. Prior to this mysterious behaviour I did nothing special to my computer or to Firefox. I'm on Win7 with up to date virus and malware protection.

The thing that makes me think that it is not a question of the wrong password, is that after much fiddling in the section "settings and security" with it's options like resetting, changing, removing or showing passwords ... suddenly my old and trusted master password was accepted again (!) but only in the "change master password" field. So I did change my master password into exactly the same old master password that had worked for the last years. I than closed Firefox ... started it again ... went to a site for which it keeps my password .. entered my (old-new) master password ... and bingo it was again accepted. Joy :) The next day however password manager again refused to cooperate! And now 'it' does not fall any more for the procedure to change the master password. I do know about typo's, and I do sometimes use the copy/paste method from hidden plain text files. When password manager finally accepted my password again ... I did - to be extra certain - a keyboard input in the first field and a copy/paste input in the second field and that was accepted by the password manager. Any one ever heard of such a thing?

In "Settings" the "Use Master Password" is checked. If I click it to turn it off, it asks me for my Master Password. Since I never had a master password, I don't know it. While using Firefox, the master password will pop up, and I have to click "Cancel". This is a real nuisance. I even tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it, but the problem persists. I use Norton Identity Safe to manage my passwords and do not need the Master Password feature. Please help!

I refreshed Firefox to help speed it up and now it won't let me access my saved passwords and when I try to turn on my Master Password it asks me to enter a new password. The 'current password' field won't let me type anything into it; so when I go to enter a new password, and submit, it tells me that it can't change my password.

You guys had a big update, all that fast new performance. My master password (MP) was missing after installing the update.

So I ran that way for a few days, but didn't want my password to be unprotected. So I put in a new MP, but it's apparently corrupted. I can't login to see my stored passwords. The MP challenge popup comes up over and over. Woe is me.

Guess I'll go to Brave unless you have a fix. If I have to lose all my saved password by resetting my MP, there's no reason to continue using Firefox.
