I have the following Javascript code which has been working for over 10 years and still works on Chrome, but does not work on FF 73.0 on Ubuntu Linux.

```
/************************************************************************
*  timer														        *
*																		*
*  This timer is started whenever the user presses a key in the input	*
*  field and pops if 0.9 second passes without a new keystroke			*
************************************************************************/
var timer = null;
/************************************************************************
*  function onKeyDownName												*
*																		*
*  This method is called when a key is pressed in the Name field.		*
*  A timer is set so that when the user stops typing the selection		*
*  list is repopulated.												*
*																		*
*  Input:																*
*		event	if passed, event.keyCode identifies the key pressed		*
*				in older releases of Internet Explorer use window.event	*
************************************************************************/
function onKeyDownName(event) {
   if (timer)
clearTimeout(timer);
   timer	= setTimeout(update, 900);
} // function onKeyDownName
/************************************************************************
*  function update														*
*																		*
*  This method is called when the user stops typing to repopulate		*
*  the selection list based upon the current contents of the Name		*
*  field.  It is also the onchange method for the following fields:	*
*  'birthmin', 'birthmax', 'incMarried', 'includeParents',				*
*  'includeSpouse', and 'Sex', and it is called by the onchange		*
*  method for the field 'treeName'.									*
************************************************************************/
function update() {
   var	form	= document.nameForm;
   if (form)
   {		// form present
var url = "/FamilyTree/getIndivNamesXml.php"; ... code to complete url by appending values of elements from form // invoke script to obtain list of names for selection list HTTP.getXML(url, // see O'Reilly Javascript gotNames, noNames);
// clear out the old selection list while we are waiting var select = form.individ; select.options.length = 0;
// put a dummy entry at the top of the selection, otherwise // selecting the first name does not call onchange var name = '[choose an individual]'; var option = new Option(name, -1, false, false); option.innerHTML = '[choose an individual]'; select.appendChild(option);
   }		// form present
   else
       alert("nominalIndex.js:update: cannot find form");
} // function update ```
When I put alerts into nameOnKeyDown and update I see that nameOnKeyDown is called but update is never called.
You can see the above code in action at https://www.jamescobban.net/FamilyTree/nominalIndex.php?name=allenby,%20a&treename=&lang=en
This code has worked for over 10 years, and still is working today on Chrome, but the timer never pops on Firefox 73.0 on Ubuntu Linux 19.10.
Long running scripts have been a constance daily occurrence every time I use my desktop computer since seems like forever. This is the latest one: chrome://calendar/content/calendar-base-view.xml:198..... Not sure if they are all calendar scripts because I'm not always given any script info, just a non responding error message sometimes. I asked for help once before and tried what was suggested, as best I could, but I still have the aggravating problem just as often as ever. However, admittedly I'm not all that computer savy and am more of a user than I am a fixer. My browser is up-to-date and I also reloaded a new one recently. Add-ons are also disabled. Any help at all will be appreciated, thanks.
Hi all,
     I'm using the latest version of FF 53.0.3 (32-bit) on Windows 7, and lately, every single tab loads slow with a momentary pop-up stating "a web page is slowing down your browser".  The pages do end up loading, and I see others have this problem as well.  I am wondering if it's because Flash (again using the latest version) no longer works as Firefox has done away with all add-ons??  Getting extremely frustrated with Firefox.  I don't get these error pop-ups in Chrome!
When I click OK Firefox loads the latest version but this happens every time I open the program Please help me to remove this or I'm going to simply revert to Chrome as this is so annoying! Firefox suddenly stopped working today. When I open it, it tells me that it's already open (which it isn't) and that it can't find or load my profile. If I go directly to profiles and create a new one, I can open it, but all my bookmarks are gone. And then if I close and try to reopen it, the same thing happens--I can't open it and get the same error message.
One thing I figured out is that the profile can’t be read only, and I discovered that mine was (why I don't know), but when I try to uncheck read only, it instantly reverts back to read only, which is weird.
I’ve tried reinstalling Firefox several times, but it’s always the same, even with a brand-new installation, I can’t open it and get the same error message. What can I do if reinstalling doesn’t even work?
I have an HP Pavillon, Juno email and Firefox is my default browser, At some point while accessing my email I will get the "unresponsive script" error and although it gives my options to continue, debug or close, none of it works and computer freezes. So I have to go to Task Manager and close everything down and start over. Very frustrating. It has also happened when I have been on other websites or with Internet Explorer. HP has tried fixing it, Juno has tried ....all to no avail. I've tried refresh, done many virus/malware scans, etc. It seems to me there is a plug-in or an add-in or some box somewhere not checked. Any ideas?
Recaptchas do not appear the little box you have to click to say I'm not a robot does not appear and it seems that the concensus is to upgrade my java to the current release.
That would be fine but im running a 32bit XP system and java no longer provides updates for 32bit systems.
My video drivers are up to date.
Internet explorer displays them correctly despite the old version of java so this is a firefox only problem.
the little icon to the left of the address is a green padlock which should mean that none of the info being loaded is from an insecure source so firefox should not be blocking anything.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
While playing FarmVille 2 foxfire keeps hanging - says at top "not responding". I can load game and play for a few minutes but then hangs. Sometimes it hangs right after loading. Will not come back so I have to quit foxfire. I have been having the problem in last several weeks but yesterday it got really bad. I usually only had to restart foxfire once to get it to work. I have tried refreshing foxfire. Also disabling hardware acceleration. My plugins are up to date. My computer is only 1.5 years old and I have windows 10. I can play FV2 on Google Chrome and MSN edge but both are slow and jerky. I really prefer foxfire over the other ones.
I have an application at work for which I need Java 7. The newer versions of Java do not work with it. I've been using Firefox 41.0.2 just fine with Java 7R17 (32 bit), but now that I have upgraded to Firefox 43.0.1, Java 7R17 no longer works. Even if I just go to the "verify java" page (https://www.java.com/verify/), the Java plugin in Firefox locks up and after a few seconds I get the following pop up window:
Warning: Unresponsive plugin
may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the plugin now, or you can continue to see if the plugin will complete.
Don't ask me again Continue Stop Plugin
I encountered this in Firefox 42 also, and was forced to roll back to 41, which I will be doing now as well. Please let me know if there is a way to fix this.
For the last week every time I start a flash game it crashes before it even gets past the loading screen and I've uninstalled Flash downloaded the latest Flash, refreshed Firefox, disabled Acceleration, turned off Protected-Mode, even used Firefox in safe mode. Hi, I have gone through all the troubleshooting procedures you suggested to fix the problem of a script running that causes extreme slowness on my computers (I have 3 so it is not a computer issue). It only happens when I am looking at facebook posts in my email, or at least that is when it begins. My firefox is up to date, that is whenever I get an update from you it is installed. Firefox works fine so long as I am not going through my facebook posts in my email. The last time I did the troubleshooting process it cleared and messed up all my settings so I am not willing to do that again. I am looking for a real solution that will not cause a reset to all my settings but will enable me to actually look at my email without the computer creeping along. I have more than adequate internet service, I have AT&T Uverse 12 meg, so it is not my internet connection, I believe it is a problem with an incompatibility between firefox and maybe my email service (AT&T) and/or facebook. The solutions AT&T offered did not take care of the problem either, hence my letter to you. I have also eliminated any unnecessary programs at start-up so I do not think there is a conflict there. Please, what kind of solution do you have now? I did your troubleshooting process in March of this year.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter, Jenifer Stabler
