I understand the basic concepts of tracking protection but I've been unable to find answers to a few specific questions. I found some documentation here in the questions / answers section but it didn't provide all the answers.

1. Do I need to clear existing cookies to remove the myriad of sites already tracking me before turning on tracking protection? Or, will turning it on do an immediate filter on my existing cookies?

2. Will turning off tracking stop sites that I want to retain login information for from retaining the "login" cookie infor i.e. are we close to a full "cookie block" with anti-tracking? Or does FFox have some creative algorithm (or list) that allows it to distinguish between tracking cookies and less offensive cookies? Concurrently, is there a way to allow a "tracking cookie" if I need it to retain information for a site I'm comfortable with?

3. One specific tracking question: Will eliminating tracking cookies stop (specifically) Google's cross site advertising, where you look at a product on site A (who shares that info via google) and then a little later google's advertising mechanism pops up those products when you're at site B?

How long would it take changes made to bookmarks on one device to sync and be reflected on another device? (same Mozilla account signed in on both devices)

I changed a couple names of my bookmarked pages so that it would shorten the pop-up menus and sub-pop-up menus that appear whenever I hover over different folders of "Bookmarks" I've saved. I'm seeing those changes reflected on the device on which I made them but not on my other computer where I'm also signed in to the same Mozilla account.

Any idea why those changes aren't syncing and being reflected across all my devices? Or... how long do such changes typically take to sync?

Thanks! -Nate

Hello,

I work with individuals who use screen readers so all access to the computer is via keyboard shortcuts rather than any "point and click" with the mouse.

At one time, I know that I could throw focus to the "hamburger stack"/"three line" open menu button via a keyboard shortcut. As an example, in Chrome, I can throw focus on the "Customize and control Google Chrome" main menu button in the main toolbar by hitting ALT. Now I know that ALT under Firefox causes the classic menu bar to appear, but I could swear that there was some way to throw focus to the open menu button via the keyboard and that, if one needed to, to use the left arrow/right arrow buttons to traverse any add-on buttons that are to the left of the open menu button.

I have tried everything I can think of, but cannot get focus on the open menu button or any of the add-on buttons located to the right of the address/search box.

The add-on Read Aloud is incredibly helpful when one is a screen reader user, but only if one can get to the button that allows it to be activated, and that button always ends up in the area to the right of the address/search box and to the right of the open menu button. The only way I have been able to activate it in the current version of Firefox is via point and click, which is utterly useless because my students cannot point and click.

The collection of buttons that I can find no way to navigate to via the keyboard are enclosed in orange in the included image. They could be for any add-ons, not the specific ones from this screen shot.

If anyone can tell me how I can get to these buttons and move among them using only the keyboard I would really appreciate it.

edit: fixed so there is no horizontal scrollbars due to spaces before start of each part.

I'm using AppArmor on my system (Gentoo, vanilla kernel 4.9). I discovered that every time Firefox starts is trying to get very powerful CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability. Does Firefox drop this capability before process handles external data/access internet? Does denying this capability have any negative consequences? EDIT: I just found out Firefox is using this capabilities to sandbox itself. Its great but default AppArmor policies like http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/apparmor/apparmor-profiles_2.12-4_all.deb will deny CAP_SYS_ADMIN. Does Mozilla have any communication channels with major distributions or should i file bug reports myself?

XMarks is closing. Eversync is unreliable. So the only sync in town for Firefox users is Firefox Sync.

That makes it a shame that Mozilla doesn't have a review page, where users can rate Firefox Sync and talk over their experiences. It would greatly reassure potential users.

Also, Firefox Sync is under-documented. Does it have, like XMarks, a facility by which users can access their bookmarks when they cannot access their local browsers, e.g. when travelling? No way of knowing, without trying it! Does it sync Folders and the arrangement of links within folders accurately? No way of knowing, without trying it! Does it allow uploads to the server, downloads from the server? No way of knowing, without trying it!

Come on Firefox, a few pages of documentation, please!

I'm looking for an about:config switch that can be toggled to disable Firefox checking add-on age except when starting it (I suspect this age is "app.update.lastUpdateTime.addon-background-update-timer").

I occasionally set my Windows clock back about two years, which used to just throw security errors on new pages. Now it also disables add-ons, which is obnoxious. Even after resetting the clock and restarting Firefox, they still can't be enabled unless extensions.legacy.enabled is set to true, which seems inadvisable.

Alternately, is there a number I can reset "app.update.lastUpdateTime.addon-background-update-timer" or another variable to that will re-enable extensions?

Thanks.

Since things keep changing at light-speed these days, do you have a single diagram that shows all of Firefox's main elements with all their names? For example, what your developers call the "navigation bar" is where the "location bar" is, followed by the the "search bar" , with several interspersed areas that include both Firefox standard icons and some add-ons' icons. (I don't know what those interspersed areas are called.) Your help info now refers to an awesome bar, which is apparently another name for a souped-up location/address/URL bar (per "Awesome Bar - Search your Firefox bookmarks, history and tabs from the address bar"). You've got a relatively new blue down-arrow control on the nav bar which provides a drop-down tray, whose name again I know not. There are also bookmark, add-on (now discouraged, I think), and additional bars that may be added, and perhaps others.

I don't want to become a developer. I just want to know how to use the customization features. If you don't already have it, a single diagram that shows the browser with all its optional parts would be *better* than a thousand words (in articles like "Awesome bar" and "Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars"), just to orient users (and hopefully keep them updated with changing versions and labels).

Thanks again fo your assistance.

I have some compatibility questions. We are running Firefox version 55.0.1. I am wondering the following:

I was troubleshooting an issue where Firefox was not loading an Extension as expected in Firefox 55 32bit. From looking at the Javascript calls the old Plugin which is still available was able to be loaded by Firefox. We found that plugin.load_flash_only was set to False on the affected browser. When we changed this back to plugin.load_flash_only = True, the extension then properly loaded.

I thought from documentation that the workaround was disabled in Firefox 53+? Was this recently changed or inadvertently re-enabled?

I refer to the classic case where I have an SSD and don't want to "consume" it by watching endless videos on YouTube (and/or other sites) that are being buffered to the disk. Or does the buffering of such videos occur in RAM by default in Firefox?

I also want to speed up Firefox at the maximum.

What are the downsides of having the entire cache in RAM and, if none, why isn't the default instalation with no cache at all on the disk (browser.cache.disk.enable = false) ?

What is the best configuration of Firefox (regarding cache) on a laptop with the an SSD and 4 GB of RAM?

Thanks in advance.
