Hi there,

I am a long time Firefox User and occasional donor. I also work in Open Source for my day job.

I am just going to ask here for someone to point me to some documentation on bookmarks for Firefox. I cannot understand the logic of bookmarks that appear in 2 different bookmark folders at once when adding a bookmark to only 1 of them.

Also as of late, every time I open firefox, my bookmarks are rearranged or "missing," but a long hunt usually finds it sitting in the unsorted or other bookmarks folder - somehow.

The more i try to fix the issue, the more wonky it gets and I seem to have an ever growing lists of duplicates in unsorted/other bookmarks. I know that its officially Other Book marks now, but i see the old name still being used in the support pages and posts.

Can someone provide a simple, non-engineer, non-developer grandma can understand it place to fix this issue before i just move to another browser to save myself the now daily hunt for my lost bookmarks?

Steve

How can I make Firefox always ask to download mp4/m4v/mov/webm/etc video files?

Using Firefox 65, I'm trying to get back a basic functionality I've had for years (prior to Quantum). I have a link to an .m4v video file that I need to download (I don't ever want links directly to m4v, mp4, mov, etc playing in the browser, I need to download these files to my computer). Whenever I click the link, it automatically opens up a blank page and starts playing the video. Nothing I do will give me the 'Ask what to do' prompt. How can I fix this? Things I've tried: Changing the default action to 'Mpeg-4 movie' under Options/Applications to 'Always Ask'. Even if the link is an mp4, it still plays it in the browser. Manually added an entry for .m4v by editing handlers.json, and setting it to 'Always ask'. Still plays in the browser. Set both Mpeg-4 Movie and the manual m4v entry to 'Save File'. Still plays in the browser. Tried doing a 'Save As' while it was playing to just save my file, but Firefox then tries to save the file as 'FileName.m4v.mp4' instead of just 'FileName.m4v'. I'm not sure if it's actually re-wrapping the file into another container, or just arbitrarily adding an extra extension to the filename, but I need it to, by default, save as the file name that is used on the server... (If it's just renaming the file, I can live with this one bug if I can make the rest of the functionality work.)

Can anyone offer any tips on this? Can anyone explain an easier way to manually add an extension into the Application section?

Here's a test page: http://camendesign.com/code/video_for_everybody/test.html Underneath the thumbnail image/embedded video there direct links to an mp4, ogg video and WebM video. The action I want, when I click on any one of those, is for Firefox to prompt me with a download location to save the file to (the usual 'Always Ask' dialog box). NOTHING should attempt to play in the web browser itself. I've been able to do this with every version of Firefox 'pre-Quantum', but I just can't make the latest version do it...

(Another work-around that may seem obvious is to right-click the file name and click 'Save Link As'. While this works on the sample page, it doesn't work on the pages I have to download these videos from... It's a scripted button that sends back the link to the file when clicked on.)

Updated Firefox to 65.0.1 yesterday now a number of websites do not work including firefox support site (Will not let me log in, had to download Opera just to post this issue.)

Examples include Facebook not loading all content or allowing me to follow links (Links do not work at all.)

Youtube can't play single videos (Again acts like link is not a link.) Playlists will somewhat work if you right click and open link in a new tab but only play about 5-10 seconds of a video before moving to a new one for another 5-10 seconds of play while also taking a lot longer than normal (more than the usual 2-3 seconds from before the upgrade) to start the next video link 10-15 seconds.

Would add info from "about:support" but it will not allow me to attach a pdf (The only way I can do that since "Automatically add" button reqires using Firefox and I can't right now(Not logging in.)

As stated before no log in ability on the support site here.

Most other sites I have tested are missing content or links randomly work or not with no real reason, at least any that I can figure some work some don't and some work some times but not others.

I have done a full un-install and re-install to see if that had any effect and it did not. Also this is the only change to my computer in a little over a month, just the update to Firefox 65.0.1.

I noticed that firefox stays in memory after I close it. In fact, If I open and close firefox 10 times, ten processes are shown in memory, each consuming around 100Mb.

I'm using Windows 7 in my corporate computer and I have been using Firefox 65.0.1 x64. I've tried to use it in safe mode (no add-ons) and problem persisted. I uninstalled it, deleted all Mozilla data in AppData and ProgramData and reinstalled it fresh. The problem persisted.

Then I installed the 32-bit version of Firefox and the problem is no more. Is it a bug that has to be fixed or some setting that shoudn't be enabled?

Thank you.

Firefox will sometimes load up as blank as well. Hitting home key or refresh doesn't help. It's been frustrating, when clicking on a link or hitting + tab it will open but be blank and not usable. What I mean is if I copy and paste link address into that blank tab it is unresponsive. When it opens a blank link it will show the full and correct link in header but no load.

I did read at least one other person had a similar problem. A reset worked for them. I first tried going into safe mode to see if any extensions etc might be the culprit. Problem happened in safe mode. So then I did try the reset. Unfortunately, the problem still happens. One other idea given was to turn off hardware acceleration, which I've done. Didn't help though.

The problem is only with firefox. Chrome works and handles links/tabs fine. Even so I ran antivirus and antimalware softwares just in case. Dead end.

I'm using 64 bit version of Windows 7.

Starting this morning, I have been getting the "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message, and I( have done every suggestion on the Help page and nothing works; not rebooting, not renaming or deleting files in the profile, not refreshing Firefox. My bookmarks are gone, I can't make new ones, and it doesn't keep track of my history either so I have to manually type in the full URLS for EVERY site I want/need to go to. I have a dentist appointment I need to go to so take your time in answering.

After I updated to v65.0 (x64), all webpages (except Yahoo) gave me: "Your connection is not secure. This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox may only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate."

I read about changing the "security.enterprise_roots.enabled" value to "true" rather than the default "false" and this works, but I am afraid of future consequences.

Since the start of Firefox Quantum release, when I returned to Firefox I've had issues with Firefox closing itself randomly on page loads - sometimes it can happen right after I start browser, sometimes once a day, completely random, haven't noticed any patterns.

I've tried to google and look into this forums, I've seen people reporting similar issues (but not lately) and I've tried various fixes suggested here and there, for example:

- Disabling all extensions

- Disabling Hardware Acceleration

- Reseting my profile

- Reinstalling Firefox

- Heck I've even reinstalled my Windows

Not once has the closing triggered crash report.

I don't have any similar issues with any other software on my computer so it must be something Firefox specific. I've monitored my PC resource usage, thought maybe somehow it hogs up all my CPU, RAM or disk and that makes it close - nope, same haeppens even when CPU usage is 20%, RAM 12 of 32GB, disk 0-5% (SSDs) etc.

Honestly I'm out of ideas what to try and if we somebody can't help me find a solution I sadly may have to abandon Firefox once again (which I really would not like to do)
