Note: I always export all bookmarks to backup file and copy that to several safe locations for needed synchronization across different browsers and also restoring them if needed. Problem: I have repeatedly selected all items in Firefox bookmarks sub-folders and then followed by importing html bookmarks thinking that I was updating my bookmarks, so all my browsers had same. Instead, what I find is duplicated sets of bookmarks building up about 10-fold so that now any search for a site yields far too many duplicate listings and it is a mess. How do I prevent this from happening and how do I actually and truly delete all boomkarks in Firefox?

Aside topic: For all the folks who have accidentally lost bookmarks, my experience with losses has lead to always having backup files of bookmarks and backup listings in word or Excel of all my settings and extensions, etc. Automation has advantages, but it introduces new headaches. I can never allow myself to believe that everything will one day be just rosy. Also, multiple different browsers can be very helpful.

After a routine system restart due to display driver crash my Mozilla Firefox ceased to work, displaying a broken link. After some messing around I decided to reinstall the application, but when I did it was an entirely new instance with none of my local saved data (bookmarks, passwords, history etc). I've been able to restore my bookmarks, but not my passwords. I've found the relevant key4.db and logins.json files pertaining to the older intall, but I have no idea how (if possible) to install them, and I assume there would only be a compiled csv if I created it.

Syncing not working

Dear Firefox,

I have just reinstalled my operating system after some issues. After reinstalling my browser, I logged into my browser after changing the password, but now no data is being synced. The open tabs, bookmarks and saved passwords were the most important, but none of that has synced back. After waiting for a little bit I decided to press the synchronize now button, but that also didn't do anything. Is there perhaps something wrong with the syncing right now? Or is there another way to get that data back? I didn't save it as I normally don't have to.

Thank you for your reply!

Kind regards, Lili

My profile seems to be corrupted. Starting Firefox with that profile completely crashes the computer, but when I reinstalled Firefox and it started with another profile it was fine. Switching back to my profile immediately crashed the computer. Is there a way to extract the history/bookmarks/passwords/etc. from my profile folder without starting Firefox? Thanks in advance!

This if Firefox 131.0 on MacOS 10.15.7 (Catalina).

When I sync my Firefox account, my old data, themes, and add-ons come back. There are add-ons, themes, passwords, and usernames from 3-4 years ago that I no longer use. How can I reset my sync data and sync again? In short, there is an 'overwrite' situation; the old data remains while the new data is synced over it.

I am going round in circles. The last Firefox update reset my Firefox on my laptop to default settings including losing my master password. I started to reset all my old settings but when I got to the part where I setup the sync with my phone version of Firefox, Mozilla asked me to log in. My password was not recognised so I hit "Forgot password" having set up a new password using one of my 10 digit authentication codes, I was then asked to log in with my new password, I did this & when trying to do the sync, I am being asked for a six digit authentication code! I have no idea where to find this code. Please help.

Hi, A few weeks ago, I wanted to sync my open Firefox tabs between my old laptop and my new one. I signed in to my Mozilla account on both computers, and the sync process worked just fine. For weeks, my synced tabs appeared in my Firefox sidebar on my new laptop, and all was good. However, the other day, I had to restart my computer a few times, and when I open Firefox again, my synced tabs were gone. On my Mozilla account page, it still says that I am signed in to my old laptop. How can I see my synced tabs again? Thank you very much for your help!

This is my original post. No response at all. Disappointing.

Non functioning Export/Import, upload images

At this point, if I could just get an opinion, a direction you might follow, if this was happening to you

It keeps recurring. This time it took 3 weeks from the time that last post. As I said in the past post, the problem is a corrupted 'sessionstore.jsonlz4 file.

My evidence is that when i ran about:support - Troubleshooting, the problem was still happening.

I just mounted a backup profile, created during the last incident. Works fine. I took the sessionstore.jsonlz4 from that backup and replaced the one in the problem profile.

After doing the replacement, the problematic profile symptoms have disappeared. At least for now, that is.

But now, I have to restore the missing portion of the session (tabs/history) created between the last occurrence and now, because of the replacement of the corrupted sessionstore.jsonlz4 with the backup.

Nobody has offered a way to do this that is not a time consuming ordeal.

What would you do?

I am signing into my Mozilla account on a new computer with a clean Firefox install. I'm able to get into my account using an authorization code to my email, but Firefox Sync isn't working so no bookmarks/passwords/history/etc. I have a persistent "account disconnected" with a yellow triangle icon. Upon clicking through, I see "Please sign in to reconnect [my email address]" with a sign in button. Signing in does nothing. What's really strange is that my other Mozilla account works fine, which leads me to believe this is an account issue—except that I've synced this account across several devices already.

What do?

I use Firefox on Ubuntu Linux, and it works fine.

For unrelated reasons I have created a new Linux Mint 22 boot partition, and I would like to use the same Firefox profile on both Linux OS-s, without having to move or copy the existing profile I use on Ubuntu. (The profile is placed on a third independent data partition!) I cannot find any information on how to do it. All information I find involves moving the profile, but then Firefox on Ubuntu would not be able to continue to use it.

I look forward to hear from you. Thank you. :-)

Addons broken in profile copied to new PC despite attempted fix

I've just transferred from one Windows 10 install to another, and wanted to transfer my Firefox profiles along with me. Initially when I transferred over my main profile, the addons worked at first but broke after a short while (specifically there were still as many addon buttons in my toolbar as before, but they were all blank and did nothing), and wouldn't restore after shutting down and reopening Firefox. At first I tried disabling and reenabling each extension, and that worked, but after shutting down and reopning Firefox, they were all broken again. I looked for fixes and tried the solutions in this ask: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1260445; first, I tried jscher2000's solution of "deleting" extensions.json by renaming it, but it only fixed a couple addons (BitWarden and uBlock Origin, mainly). Then I tried cor-el's solution of deleting combatibility.ini, and that still only had BitWarden, uBlock Origin, and maybe one or two others working - it also seemed to slightly further the problem, as the toolbar was now set to default without even the blank addon buttons, and the extensions overflow button now just opened about:addons.

But, then I deleted the profile and copied it over again, but this time I preemptively went into extensions.json and changed all the paths to the new correct path (I also did so for the one path address in pkcs11.txt just in case, because it was the only other thing that came up in a search in the profile folder that had that hard-baked full path that might need updating; I don't know what pkcs11.txt does but I just wanted to be sure), and then (not sure if this part matters quite as much) did Create a New Profile and selected that existing copied-over folder as the folder for that profile to use. Lo and behold, all my addons worked! And they've continued to work as normal and not break through several times of closing and reopening both that specific profile and Firefox overall, and even with a couple shut downs and restarts of Windows.

However..... I tried doing that exact procedure (copying over profile folder, editing the paths in extensions.json and pkcs11.txt to be the new correct ones, Create a New Profile and selecting that folder) for my secondary profile, and yet still most addons end up nonfunctional with a defaulted toolbar and extension overflow button opening about:addons just like in the main profile after I did the compatibility.ini fix (even though I didn't even touch it on this profile). After several tries of doing that with differences in naming of the new profile, or also trying to delete compatibility.ini, still I got the same result. Then I tried doing the "disable and then reenable each extension" thing again like I tried first on my primary profile, and it brought the extensions back and in their correct order in the toolbar, but when I exited Firefox and reopened it, they were back to the multitude of blank buttons (which, at least, was a change from before). I have no idea what's different, as far as I'm aware I'm doing the exact same thing that worked on the first profile yet it's still ending up broken.

I've also now tried copying over a third profile in the same manner, and it works perfectly just like the first/primary profile did. But the second profile still just will not work.
