Adblock Plus - is it safe? Why Mozilla doesn't recommended it? I used it in the past some years ago but now I am scary about safety

Dear Community,

I would like to download this extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/ I would like to know how it works. If I will install this extension my firefox will be check hashsum for the files of this extension automatically? Or maybe public key of the organization/company who created Adblock Plus extension? How it is work? Can you tell me? I hope that people from Mozilla now read this and can answer for my question. This is very important for me.

Next question is to Adblock Plus extension. I can read this information: "This add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla. Make sure you trust it before installing" so my question is why Mozilla don't recommended this extension? This extension now use 6,678,297 people so this is huge count. It is possible that this extension is not safe and these people now use malicious software? Why on dedicated website for this extension I can't see company name? Why this company is not verified by Mozilla? So my sugestion for people from Mozilla is to change this and check this extension or maybe add some information on website for this extension.

So I should install this extension? My friend use this on Google Chrome and he recommended me this software but I don't know if this is exatcly the same version. Maybe Chrome has verified Adblock Plus software and this is safe but Mozilla didn't verified this and this can be dangerous software because this can be not exactly the same version?

Next question is to adblocker. Why Mozilla can't make their own software to block all annoying ads and due to fight with malware? Example Opera browser have own buil-in adblocker. Why firefox can't do this? Maybe people from Mozilla should do this? This can be helpful because if this can be happen I will be not install any 3rd party software for firefox anymore and I will be safe. Maybe I can send somehow this suggestion to people from Firefox?

I hope that you can help me.

Yours faithfully, Peter

Hello. I had discovered that Firefox itself creates a so called "fork bomb" by creating a big amount of sub-processes under the main one (with I can prove thru the attached screenshoots).

Could anyone have a idea how to limit Firefox from opening so many sub-processess, with (wanting or not) are mostly causing that my system runs out of memory and stop beeing responsible to any of my inputs, with forces me to restart the system (similar thing is done by an DOS attack)

Hi,

My name is Julio. I'm from Brazil and i'm using Ububtu 18.04 LTS OS. After an update/upgrade routine firefox have started to crashing at startup. I've tried almost everything avaible on mozilla's support webpage (https://support.mozilla.org/pt-BR/kb/falhas-do-firefox-solucione-previna-e-obtenha-ajuda#w_peca-ajuda-para-solucionar-esta-falha). I've already removed manually the folder .mozilla (~/.mozilla) and tried a clean install using different ways: ubuntu repository, comand line (sudo apt install firefox), synaptic repository, downloading the firefox-89.0.tar.bz2 file on firefox webpage... and nothing have worked for me. I can't access the troubleshoot mode (the app crashes before that). When i ran firefox on comand line the outcome is:

ExceptionHandler::GenerateDump cloned child 12536 ExceptionHandler::WaitForContinueSignal waiting for continue signal... ExceptionHandler::SendContinueSignalToChild sent continue signal to child Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error. Exiting due to channel error.

Despite the information avaible on support webpage, i couldn't find a folder ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted. I've found just text files: LastCrash and submit.log (and another stuffs).

Follows the content of submit.log file:

[dom 06 jun 2021 23:10:29 -03] Crash report submitted successfully [dom 06 jun 2021 23:13:31 -03] Crash report submitted successfully [dom 06 jun 2021 23:16:23 -03] Crash report submitted successfully

And the content of LastCrash is:

Could somebody help me, please?

Why does the "limit to designed websites" feature functions for all websites except mozilla.* please ?

This is really annoying to have to go back each times one didn't check the url before click in google results.

Thanks

I have set a primary password in Firefox. Sometimes, the password prompt appears out of nowhere. For example, I have Firefox running in the background while I'm using a completely different application, and suddenly, the password prompt appears, asking me for my Firefox primary password.

This is very distracting, so I'm wondering if it's possible to configure Firefox to ask me for my primary password only while I'm using it. I don't care if the prompt appears as soon as I start Firefox, or whenever a new page is opened that requires a password. The only important thing is that the password prompt doesn't distract me while I'm using a different application.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

Since the latest update, Firefox shows a white space at the top of all web pages, covering almost half the screen. This includes customisation screens for addons, themes, and also the troubleshooting page. The only page that seems unaffected is Firefox's own settings.

The issue seems linked to the toolbar somehow, as entering fullscreen mode temporarily hides the issue. However, as soon as the cursor moves up far enough to show the tabs and search bar, the white space also reappears. Hiding either the menubar, the bookmarks toolbar, or both did not fix the issue.

Restarting Firefox in troubleshooting mode seemed to help, but I have not managed to find the root cause. These are the things I tried, first one by one and then all at once, with no result:

  • Deactivating addons
  • Switching to system default theme
  • Deleting userChrome.css
  • Clicking "Refresh Firefox..." on the troubleshooting page

I'm a left handed mouse user. For editing purposes, I don't use my left hand, I use my right hand. And, generally use the right handed keyboard shortcuts as defined by Microsoft a long time ago. I've notice that some of the short cuts have been implemented, while others are not. It is possible to implement them all, as it's annoying when I try to do a copy and paste operation, and have to .. Left Click .. my mouse to execute a copy operation, while pressing [ SHIFT + INSERT ] to do the paste operation. I would prefer to just press [ CTRL + INSERT ] to copy.

PS .. I've also noticed that [CTRL + END] works, while [CTRL+ HOME] does not.

I have noticed that when I manually log in into accounts.google.com with no prior cookies in the browser and no association with a google account prior to that, it automatically logs me into sites like youtube.com, even with the strictest cookie policies (tried with Strict, custom+cross-site and custom+third-party). I do not particularly mind privacy wise since I'll log into them with the same account anyways, but as far as I understood, there should be absolutely no way this should happen. Cookies should be isolated by domain, I have uBlock Origin installed which prevents cookie sharing between domains by setting some CNAME records in subdomains (Uncloak canonical names), and afaik Firefox does not automatically read the google account cookies and share them around - if it did, that would be even more serious. So what is happening here and how can I change that? This seems to be a serious issue that I'm honestly not comfortable with out of principle since I chose the strictest settings.

The gestures defined by browser.gesture.swipe.* do not work on Firefox Linux unless the ALT key is held down. I only discovered it that worked at all with ALT by accident while searching about this issue...

Is there a way to get gestures to work WITHOUT requiring the use of the keyboard (which would seem to defeat the purpose of having touchpad gestures)?

Thanks.

Hi everyone!

When I browse the web with Firefox, it happens that the system becomes completely unresponsive. Some web pages seems to make Firefox using a lot of RAM and write a lot on the hard drive. I cannot actually say much more, because it not even possible to login in a console. The system is too slow and the console login times out... Firefox (or Web Content) writes wildly on the hard drive.

I used the Firefox provided by my Linux distribution (Linux Mint), but also the one downloaded from mozilla.org. The problem seems to be less frequent for the second, but it happend nevertheless.

The point is that this problem with Firefox happens sometimes, for example, when I forget the browser open on somehow demanding webpage (like in newspapers where there are a lot of media, graphics, and so on).

A point is also that I cannot replicate this "bug". If now I browsed the same pages that made the mess, nothing would probably happen.

I thought it had to do with the swap, but the system hanged both when the swap space was enabled and when it was disabled.

I saved a copy of the profile (and the cache) after the last crash, if they could be useful. The last time I had actually to force the shutdown of the computer, because there was no way to regain control over it.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your answers!

Fedora 33 shipped with firefox-81. Just recently the first firefox update to fedora 33 landed. That update is firefox-89.

It is dead, no, excuse me, it's DEAD and DEAD slow. Youtube and streaming video sites stutter so badly that I'm lucky to get 2-3 frames per minute even if the audio holds up. firefox-89 is also slow on other fronts, no, excuse me, it's DEAD slow on all fronts.

I have a large number of windows and tabs and cutting that number by 25 to 30% has no noticable effect.

After searching for solutions, the top suggestion was to disable "proton", but no that had only a tiny effect.

What are the mozilla people thinking? My guess is that they are not thinking.

Another worthy question is, how did this awful piece of software get distributed by the fedora project.

Look, I've been using mostly firefox since it's beginning, but come on, this is ridiculous.

I downgraded to firefox-81 but now some of my streaming services have stopped working because of an unsupported browser. Additionally, gmail does not work after the downgrade.

I know I'm not a loner in this and I know that firefox-89 is not the most recent version to disappoint in a major way. I predict that firefox will be history within a year unless Mozilla pulls it's act together.

I had to downgrade to v88.
