Hello,

When my Openconnect VPN is on, Firefox takes very long time to open links from outside its own window: ie links opened with xdg-open in Linux (Ctrl+Click). If Openconnect is Off, links open almost instantly as expected.

Here's /etc/resolv.conf when Openconnect is Off. And here /etc/resolv.conf when Openconnect is On: search contains 11 internal domains. Environment: - KDE Plasma 5.20.5 - Firefox 84.0.2 - xdg-utils 1.1.3 - networkmanager-1.26.4 - networkmanager-openconnect-1.2.6 - openconnect-8.09

System proxy settings: No Proxy

What I have tried: - Start Firefox in Safe-mode (no effect) - Explicitly setting Proxy to None / System Default in FF settings (no effect) - Opening links resolvable only inside VPN and just google.com (no effect) Only turning Off Openconnect helps so far. I suspect it's got to do with name resolution (maybe routing as well?), but have no conclusive evidence. Btw, Chrome is not affected by this behavior.

Thank you

# Ubuntu garbage data increases exponentially
## Intro and context

Hello. I am a power user that works in software and web development. I have been using Firefox on and on for most my life, but full time as my main browser since late 2018. One thing I love Firefox for is its lightness on memory compared to that of Google Chrome, and also its open web standards, open source, privacy, ethical owners, and customizations. I have been using Windows 10 up until July 9th 2020 before I switched to my first main Linux desktop. I have always kept my eye on CPU and RAM usage, as high CPU drains battery and running out of RAM results in a system crash. I actively keep many tabs open (less than 100 but more than 60) I ensure that they are light. I mostly have GitHub tabs open, but I keep a few other things open as well, mostly Wikipedia/wiktionary and duckduckgo tabs, a pcloud (file service) tab, but sometimes a youtube tab or two (rarely a reddit tab)

## Issue

I have been noting that garbage collection is getting exponentially worse over time. When I got my laptop, I was able to keep 2-3 fully packed profiles open at all times, and never having to close Firefox until shutdown (after about 12-16 hours uptime) I rely heavily on Firefox profiles for organization. It has been getting exponentially worse. Starting in late 2020, I had to reduce the max number of open profiles to 2, and in 2021. In early January, I had to start closing the profiles once a day to free up 2-3+ GiB of RAM (swap doesn't change much, that is the garbage data that isn't being cleared, it normally ends up at 800 MiB to 1.7 GiB by the end of the day) and now (as of January 22nd 2021) I have to close Firefox 2-3 times a day to prevent my system from getting overloaded, as Firefox eats through 1-2 gigabytes of RAM per hour, even when idle. I have noticed several processes titled `web content` that use 200-600 MiB each (there is usually 2-7 of them) I am wondering what I can do for Firefox to prevent high RAM usage. For reference, here is my main profile in idle mode:

Mozilla is refusing to let me upload images right now, so I will link them

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/MProfile1_Idle_1.22.2021.png

Here is my usual 2nd profile in idle mode:

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/MProfile2_Idle_1.22.2021.png

Here is the RAM and SWAP usage before my 2nd refresh today (uptime: 8 hours 46 minutes)

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/FF_GF_Open_1.22.2021.png

And here it is with Firefox and Nautilus closed (I forgot about nautilus before getting the first 2 pics, it uses a lot of memory depending on its usage):

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/FF_GF_Closed_1.22.2021.png

I have lately suspected that GitHub may have gotten heavier, or is sending too much data via AJAX methods, but I am not entirely sure.

    1. System specs

Device: `Dell XPS 13 9XXX`

Operating system: `Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa)`

Linux Kernel version: `5.4.0-48-generic`

Processor type: `Intel Core i5 10th generation`

Processor specs: `Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 CPU @ 1.00GHz × 8`

Processor mode: `x64`

Desktop environment: `GNOME 3.36.1`

Windowing system: `X Desktop environment 11`

Memory: `7.4 GiB (8 GB)`

SWAP file: `2.0 GiB`

Firefox version: `84.0.1` - I haven't updated in a while due to fear of memory increase and instability

Number of Firefox profiles: `61` - no new profiles created since December 26th 2020

I am wondering what I should do about this. I work with hundreds of projects, so I can't close too many tabs, as it becomes hard to access and manage. I intend to close 16 tabs in the next month, as I am freeing up some projects.

Hi, I'm trying to disable the "restore previous session including tabs" after crash feature.

I've disabled the "Restore previous session" check from the general configuration panel.

I've changed the following values from the about:config panel: browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes = 0 browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash = false

However after a restart or shutdown, Firefox still shows up the tabs from the previous session.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 OS.

Could someone please help me with this?

Perhaps this feature is useful for some people, but for me it's extremely annoying; plus I really like Firefox and don't wanna change browsers.

Thanks!

This is more of a note for developers rather than a question, but I don't where to send it.

Without any action from me, this web page appeared in a new tab in Firefox: https://technologyto.com/media-capture.html?v=0.3.7&p=0.3.6&type=update (I was away from the PC when it loaded.)

The extension called "Media Capture" is not intalled in my Firefox. It might have been, a few years ago, as I vaguely remember trying something like it. (It didn't work with encrypted streams, so was no use to me.)

Now "Media Capture" does not exist at addons.mozilla.org, and I didn't find "TechnologyTo" at github.

So it's very odd that something has the power to load that page.

I recently made some custom icons for my top sites: uploaded them online, added the custom image url and they looked great. But they don't seem to be working anymore, I only had them for a couple of days and can't think of anything I might've done for that to change.

I can add a different image url and it shows up, in fact, I set the icons both in Linux and Windows and they still show up in Windows. I attached a before and after, what's going on? Thanks in advance

I am using Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS x86_64, Version 84.0.2 (64-bit). I really enjoy using Firefox Relay, but I would like to disable the icon in email fields. When I click on the switch that does so, it refuses to toggle off. I've Googled and browsed the forums here, but can't find anybody that's experiencing the same issue. I thought that maybe an extension that I have is preventing me from toggling off, but disabling every other extension changed nothing.

The solution might be easy but I didn't see it

How can I backup my Top Sites customized (pin sites + personalized pictures) ?

I spent too much time on this customizing, and I don't know how many time I had to redo it after it got all removed/ messed up by I guess Firefox Sync ?

I would like my computer to be the primary instance, and that NONE of the other instance could make any change on the primary. Currently I have no idea how it really works, I think that every time I add a device on my sync "family" it mess up my computer Firefox instead of syncing my settings on the new device.

Hi. I always use my browser in maximised windows and in other browsers like Brave or Chrome, I can easily move my mouse pointer all the way to the right on the screen and click the mouse to snap to a particular place on the scroll bar, since the scroll bar extends all the way to the right edge of the window.

However, in Firefox it seems that there is padding on the right side of the scroll bar meaning that I 'overshoot' the scroll bar itself and accidentally click on the padding, which sends the scroll bar flying all over the place.

How can I remove the padding on the right of the scroll bar and get a functionality similar to other browsers? I assume it has something to do with CSS styling, but I'm not very good with that kind of stuff...

I like search suggestions. They're frequently helpful.

However, sometimes I just know where I'm going and I can type what I want faster than find it in search, and the search suggestions and completions just get in the way, obscuring the window underneath that I'm trying to read.

I don't want to turn them off permanently, but is there a way to cancel (or toggle) the search suggestions and completions by keystroke? If I hit ESC, it cancels the current suggestions until I hit one more key. I want to cancel them until I hit return or toggle them back on. Or possibly delay any new suggestions until I've stopped typing at least.

Hi!

I've recently (within a week or so) had this problem where I have a youtube video paused on one tab and while browsing another site on another tab the youtube video unpauses and continues to play the video.

This happens continually and so I have to either mute the video or close the youtube tab so it doesn't distract my browsing. The problem stops also if I refresh the youtube page.
