firefox search results have changed when i query for "news"; everyday i search for news by simply entering the word news into the browser. The results always were preceded by a scroll able header that had a picture relevant to article and story and the underneath was a list of news sites ( like CBC, CNN, MSNBC, etc)... now when i type in my query ( the word "news") the results displayed still list all the news sites but the header with pictures and story has disappeared - can anyone help?
I see a post about this from 2013 and it's been happening to me of late-mostly on the NY Times website. I'm on Mac OS Catalina. Any thoughts?

Hi guys,
I've been trying for a couple weeks to make the switch from Chrome on Big Sur but am having trouble ironing a few things out. I work in research and view a ton of pdfs, so I like them to (1) open in browser, and (2) specifically, open in a new tab. I haven't been able to get Firefox to do these things.
For (1), I get the "What should Firefox do with this file?" every time I download a pdf from Researchgate (even the same exact pdf). I select the options in the image ("open with Firefox (default)" and "do this every time." But it shows me the popup every time. I've gone to Preferences->Applications->PDFs->Open in Firefox but the behavior persists.
For (2), I'm at a loss - when I open downloaded pdfs, they always open in a new window. I don't even know if it's possible to get them to open in a new tab, but it would be nice and save me a lot of time.
Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction!
What's going on?
Performance is awful after downloading update.

I check ON my email in AOL through Firefox. I have a doctor's appointment, then stop st the pharmacy. After that home again. When I fire up Firefox to go back into AOL, nothing happening. I download the updated Firefox just in case. Still Nuttin" Why won't AOL load back up in Firefox I need Firefox not AOL Gold which I hate. AOL in Firefox is so much better plus many other available features in Firefox.

When surfing from Menu > Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Library arrows, it does "successfully" recognize a July 15 backup copy existing, but when clicking on it, it only brings up an error message saying "unable to process."
When going instead to Firefox Help > More Troubleshooting > Profile > Show in Finder, it again finds the same July 15 backup, but only produces an error message saying that no document can be opened. It offers generic referral to the entirety of the Apple Store and entirety of all existing applications on the hard drive, that already didn't step up to open it, but no clue as to what opening Firefox's own proprietary reference actually requires, or who to ask if the user fails.
This is a catastrophic result for bazillions of users, especially any involved in research or use of deep websites in which the shortcut-route or source-reminder bookmarks were harvested over time in a way that isn't easily reconstructed from "accounts" or emails or notes. Why in the world would anyone think it wise to make the default browser setting automatically "upgrading" by wiping out all accumulated user data without any warnings to the user to first do a manual backup of personal data, such as by exporting all existing FF bookmarks into another browser first and then manually making whatever additional transition or re-import FF wanted? Had I known I needed to have made a lot of notes in order to have backup at all, I would have... or would have picked a safer browser to rely on, if auto-update wipe-out risk is to be the "normal" given environment now. Bookmarks are not just frivolous things for a fair number of folks.
Heartsick. Hoping there's still a third route for restoring, beyond the total loss and brickwalls experienced so far.

UPDATE (4 AUGUST 2021): Problem solved. Disregard original question below. UPDATED
Yesterday, the websites jwz.org and dnalounge.com (yes, the two websites run by one of Mozilla's conceivers) stopped working on Firefox. They just keep saying "Connection Timed Out", despite every other website loading fine.
I went through all the add-on-disabling and troubleshooting steps emphasised here, but it hasn't solved the problem.
This happens in both Firefox desktop and mobile for Android, but works fine in other browsers. Again, I went through all the steps of disabling add-ons/plug-ins and operating in Troubleshooter mode.

Whenever I check "about Firefox" under the Help menu, if there are updates, FF automatically downloads and installs them. This is not my preferred method of installing updates. When I go to the Tools/Settings and type in "Updates", I find that the "Automatically install updates (recommended)" button is selected. Of course, I immediately change this to the "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" setting, which lasts until I (manually) install the next update. At that point, the new update setting defaults back to "Automatically install updates (recommended)".
Is there a way to make my update selection stick?
