I want to change text encoding so it defaults to Unicode. If I use the [alt] key then the View tab I can change it from Western but it reverts back after closing the page. Sometimes that does not work because the Text Encoding option in the View tab is greyed out. The About Firefox window says I am up to date with 83.0 (64bit).

I recently changed from Ubuntu Gnome to KDE Plasma. Now, when I'm running Firefox (v83) and click "Save as" to save a file from a web page, Firefox gives me a file list with directories mixed in alphabetically, rather than at the top. This is new behavior to me; I don't know if it's new with v83 (I was previously running v82), or if it's a KDE implementation issue.

Either way, I HATE having to scroll down through page after page of files and folders to find my destination folder. Since the dialog box also incorporates full-row select, I can't even click in the file list and type the first letter of my destination folder.

Please tell me there is a way to change this behavior and have Firefox's "Save as" dialog sort the files with directories at the top!

Thanks.

Is there any way to revert from the pinch zoom back to the full screen zoom? I know that you can do the css full screen zoom via ctrl + pinch, but it seems much more laggy and slow than in older versions of Firefox. Is there some about:config option I can use to revert it? Or is it just baked in now.

To better control my browsing history and what sites are allowed to leave behind cookies, I primarily use private windows when I browse. I've used private windows in this manner for years, I find them quite useful, however, this means when I accidentally hit that big X at the top right corner, I have nothing but my horrible memory to rely on in trying to restore some of what was rather suddenly lost.

For years I've had Firefox ask before closing windows with multiple tabs, a feature I've found quite useful. Is there any way I can set Firefox behave the same towards private windows?

Please don't respond with the obvious "just stop using private windows". Were that to be a worthy solution, I wouldn't be asking this. I'm not about to sacrifice the benefits of private windows that motivated me to use them in the first place, I just wanna know if I can prevent the consequential loss of tabs I've experienced from it.

(p.s. I've now twice typed this question out in private windows before accidentally closing them, first trying to open the menu to double check my browser version, and second by hitting CTRL-W)

Thank you all, and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Ok guys, first I've been using this browser since it was called Netscape 1.0.

This is quite some time ago, right? But now level of suffering has become too high. I'm not writing 10 finger system. I've not studied computer science. (However a MINT subject.)

Nowadays at least weekly a website crashes, because I'm typing some unknown (to me) key combination, which causes the site to reload, Firefox to close, a new tab to be replaced, or whatsoever bullshit. And no way to switch off short cuts (at least as far as I have found out).

Even to get to this page was an odyssey. First set up an account, the confirmation code not accepted, a resend request omitted, finally some old password worked. On the way restart browser, as accidentially again I typed some key sequence, which killed the browser task....

I'll switch to edge or chrome, or whatsoever, because I'm really fed up. After over 25 years. Is that, what you wanted? The kids of 25 or below don't care about Mozilla! They even don't ask a single question about their browser (on Android - guess, what they use...). I know about of this, as I've got two of those here at home.

I'm not asking for help, since this already beyond scope. This is a farewell post. My mails are managed by Pegasus ever since and I'll return to Opera now, despite it is the Webkit engine. Netflix runs smoothly. Firefox and Netflix is a neverending vexation. I've been using Opera as well for over 20 years. They did a better job.

It's bitter, but for me, it's the truth....

CCTV systems with Network Video Recorder (NVR) over cat6a PoE

Hi,

I have been designing a Hikvision CCTV system and bumped into a problem. Mac users cannot use a browser to access all the various controls and settings as Hikvision rely upon ActiveX, which is old and a security risk. I am informed that this problem exists in the whole CCTV industry! I am advised that Hikvision will eventually dump ActiveX in favour of HTML5, but this seems to require a new operating system!

I think it's incredible that a whole industry should build itself upon one piece of legacy. Surely browsers would be the way to go. That way online acccess to a CCTV system would be OS independent. Does onyone have some thoughts on this?

Why not implement an HTML5 plugin?

I'm no expert, but have been around computer tech since the early 1980s.

Comments/observations much appreciated.

Regards Michael

HI,

my Firefox has had this problem for a long time. (I am running version 83.0 now, but have had this at least since 72.0) I am not in Privacy Mode (temp or permanent) and it is set to "remember history", which it does in the History tab/sidebar. The problem I have is that it doesn't remember the Previously Closed Tabs or ...Windows. These lists are always empty. It isn't a major issue, but sometimes it is really annoying...

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

I'll include the Troubleshooting Info, in case that is required.

Thanks, Pat
