So I've been using PIA for years (it's the only VPN I can find that has simple port forwarding and split tunnel/reverse split tunnel) and once they switched over to their app's 3.0 version, (like 3 or so years ago, I switched to Mullvad previously until they removed port forwarding recently) I noticed some extreme slowdowns. Specifically, just searching things takes 5-10 seconds to fully load the page. Opening a YouTube video has me sitting there for 15-60 seconds just watching the loading thing just spin and spin (once the video starts, I can load 4K60fps+ video perfectly fine), I can't even consistently access my bank account website because it's so incredibly slow. Most general websites take 10+ seconds to just load when they normally wouldn't. My internet is 400 down/10 up, in case you were wondering.

I've contacted PIA's support over the course of many many months, multiple times, and they are about as helpful as a cockroach you find upside down in the middle of your floor. I've tried messing with every setting on the app and have narrowed it down to the split tunnel feature of the app. Telling this to PIA support does nothing, they just go "glad you found what the issue is" without helping me fix it. I don't want my entire computer under the VPN, which is why split tunnel (and reverse split tunnel) is important to me. I specifically have Firefox (and Firefox Dev) as set to bypass the VPN, and that's how I get the aforementioned issues.

The reason I feel like this is a Firefox-specific issue is that this only happens with Firefox. (and Firefox Dev) I've tried Chrome, Edge, even (shudder) Opera GX, put them as bypass on the PIA app, and have no issues loading anything. Searches are instant, YT videos don't even load, they just start playing immediately, there are no issues.

Note that when I set Firefox to use the VPN instead of bypass it, it loads perfectly fine, just a bit slower than normal since the VPN server is in a different country, but it's still much faster than if it was bypassing it. I'm not sure what else to try at this point, I've been slowly using Chrome more and more solely so I don't have to wait so long for every web page to load, and I hate that. I would love for any ideas to be bounced around on what to do, cause I can't find anyone else with this specific issue, nor PIA support being any help. Any ideas would be greatly, greatly appreciated, I've been dealing with this issue for years now.

Hi,

I use Firefox for it's "multi-account container" functionality for work, it's easy to work in parallel in multiple environments without needing multiple browser sessions (like with e.g. Chrome).

Recently, Firefox has been prompting me with a "An update to Firefox started in the background. You'll need to restart to finish the update." message.

Yes, in general this forced update is annoying, but this is not about that.

  • When I proceed with the restart, I get a "You've launched an older version of Firefox" error message. Causing me to lose all my data when I press "create a new profile".
  • A day or two after going through the hassle of setting everything back up, I get the message again.
  • this time I check in settings and see "Firefox is up to date", "Version 118.0.1 (64-bit)".
  • I check on the Firefox website (using a different browser), and confirm this is the latest version -> Issue 1
  • I open Firefox, same "You've launched an older version of Firefox" error -> Issue 2
  • I worked around this by downloading the latest beta "Version 119.0b5 (64-bit)", which allows me to open the browser and recover my work
  • all of this happened while I have the updates toggle on "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" -> Issue 3

Problems:

  1. Issue 1: faulty update notice.
  2. Issue 2: because of faulty update, I'd lose my data
  3. Issue 3: Firefox shouldn't have updated in the first place, as auto-updates are off and I didn't accept any update message

! I'm on a MacBook Pro 2023 (M2 Pro Apple Silicon). ! I wrote this after the update to beta, so system information is not as it was at time of problem ! Please allow for a preview before submitting a support ticket

Can you please sort this out, I'd love to keep using your tool but this (together with the premise of instant forced restarts in a corporate environment) is making it very hard for us to love your browser.

as a a developer i use localhost often. However, a few weeks ago firefox started becoming very slow on localhost. I start a project and try to access it at localhost, but it takes a very long time to do the "initial load". then it works fast for a little while, and then its like it have to reload everything and that take a long time.

I have tried opening a private window to disable all my extensions, but without luck. I have tried checking my hosts file but found nothing wrong there. I have tried opening same localhost in Safari, but that works normally (fast).

I have checked online but found almost nothing, and the few things i found couldnt solve my issue. I hope there is a solution because this is a problem for me every day.

Hello all,

I'm building a website which uses a `ServiceWorker`. This worker uses `import` to load another JS module. As far as I understand, this should be possible starting Firefox 114 (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Statements/import#browser_compatibility). However, it's crashing with an `TypeError: ServiceWorker script at https://localhost:9292/sw.js for scope https://localhost:9292/ threw an exception during script evaluation`. The worker script is loaded as module using `navigator.serviceWorker.register('./sw.js', { type: "module" })`, and working on Safari and Chrome as expected. When I remove the `import`, the worker loads and works. Tested on Firefox 118, 119, 120.

Here is a full sample: https://gist.github.com/fnordfish/9b38b90fba54093ee601887a3bd3e11e

I can't find any related bug in Bugzilla or anywhere else. Which makes me wonder what I am missing.

PS: Non module `importScripts` work.

I am trying to migrate from a very old version of Firefox (v. 55) to the current one, but there is an app that is more helpful to me that all the other features combined. That is the "Tab Grouping" app that will not run in any version of FF higher than v. 55.

In my work, which often includes a tremendous amount of research, I need to be able to quickly go from one group of tabs to another. If I had to open all these sites manually, that would take the better part of the day and frankly I don't have near the mental capacity to remember the tremendous number of tabs. I have had a couple replies (Thanks!) to this question sometime back, but unfortunately none were even close in performance.

So, can anyone direct me to an app that will allow very quick movement from different sets of windows/tab groups (please see screen shots below)? Is there anyway that I can get this app to work in Legacy mode? I have several other old apps that work perfectly well in this mode.

I used Apple Migration Assistant to move the entirety of my wife's old iMac (the old computer won't accept updates, so her machine was not secure) to a new one. The migration operation appeared smooth and essentially perfect.

Somehow my Bookmarks have overwritten my wife's (years ago, I turned Synch = ON, was that it? Synch is OFF now). The bookmarks are still OK on the old computer, so how do I locate and move that info to the new machine "AND BE SURE TO GET IT RIGHT"? My wife is the family business manager, so her bookmarks are Insurance, Banking, Healthcare, etc.

I've done some searching, but there are thousands of posts, I can't wade through all of that.

Some weeks ago, I remember that opening certain documents after finding them in Firefox could be done by using it as a temporal file (or at least I deduce that because they were stored in a folder called temp somewhere in my computer's storage). I could do it with docx files, however it does not seem to be the case anymore. It just asks where to save it, which, although is fine, is not what I want. Given that it used to be different, I know it's possible to have it that way, so I'd like to ask: how do I customise Firefox so that I can open files as temporally stored instead of just downloading, as it used to be?

As an example, this is an document I'd like to open as a temporal file.

I hope I was clear, and thank in advance to the wonderful Mozilla community

I know setting 'permissions.default.image' with a value of '2' will block the downloading of images. However, this also removes the IMG tag from the page source. Is there a way to retain this, because I want access to the image path in the SRC attribute; for development testing purposes via Selenium.

Thanks.

I have an existing collection of extensions on AMO, I can add and remove extensions from it and add my notes to the extensions, but if I try and edit the collection info (name, description and custom URL), it incorrectly errors, claiming I have invalid characters in the custom url. Even if I don't actually change anything when I hit "Edit", I can't save, I have to cancel out.

I don't really care too much but probably someone should take a look at some point.

There isn't a forum for the website specifically, so posting under FF desktop as that is browser I was using when this occurred (FF Win10 x86-64, Dev edition)

Hi,

brief backstory: When I set up my new desktop, I copied over the nightly profile from my laptop. This however meant that Firefox Sync kept confusing my laptop and my desktop, only ever keeping the most recently synced state from either. This persisted even after I changed the devices names.

Searching on the internet, I found a suggestion to delete `services.sync.client.GUID` from about:config. I did that, and long story short, I cannot open any websites on my desktop anymore. It fails immediately with SEC_ERROR_LIBRARY_FAILURE.

This error persists even after

  • Refreshing Firefox
  • Reinstalling Firefox
  • Creating a new Firefox profile

whenever I log back into Sync. So I tried deleting and recreating my Firefox account to get rid of whatever corrupted data is presumably stuck in the sync data, but even then the error still occurs. It only disappears if I create a new profile and *never sign into sync*, but this is not a long term solution.

Does anyone have an idea how to identify and delete whatever setting is causing firefox to choke?
