Why am I continually being asked to set Firefox as my default browser. I do but it doesn't stay? Very annoying.

The small green dot in the upper right that notifies me of a pending update is gone, since several months. When I navigate to About Firefox, or in the settings, I can see that a new version is available and it lets me install the update. But I miss being able to see the notification.
Did I disable some setting by mistake? Auto-updates should be turned on as far as I know.
