How can I prevent Firefox from automatically opening tabs and switching to the tab every time I download a file?

The obvious thing would be to uncheck the box that says "When you open a link, image or media in a new tab, switch to it immediately"

Nice try, but U N F O R T U N A T E L Y, that method does NOT work! With the box unchecked, I still get a new tab that gets switched to.

I'm trying to download 10 years of bank statements. I do not want 120 tabs popping up!

2 instances of nautilus opening when opening a file from Firefox Downloads

Environment - OS: Omarchy - File manager: Nautilus (running as --gapplication-service) - Desktop portals: xdg-desktop-portal + xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland (+ gtk fallback) Firefox: latest stable from Arch repositories

Observations Only one Firefox process is running (pgrep -a firefox). Only one Nautilus process is running, but it receives two open requests, resulting in two windows. The issue does not occur in Chromium/Chrome, which opens only one window. Running xdg-open <file> manually opens one Nautilus window.

Portal logs show GTK being chosen as last-resort fallback, but system-wide XDG configuration appears correct.

Question

Is this a known Wayland/portal bug in Firefox? Are there recommended debugging flags or patches to trace the duplicate launch request?

I would like to be able set a keyboard shortcut to automatically toggle the option "always ask you where to save files" on and off. At times, I am downloading a lot of pdf files from the Internet and these can all go into the downloads folder. However, I also need to frequently download pdf files and customize them before the download.

I started using a new laptop and when I receive emails through Outlook, the excel attachments won't open and I get a message saying that I don't have the pdf software. These are Excell files, not PDF. I've tried all the suggestions on-line but they still won't download as Excel files, only Firefox files.

I designed a label in Avery, downloaded as a PDF and told my download to always open in Adobe Acrobat Reader. When I try to open the download I'm told that Reader can't pen because it is either not a supported file type or the file has been damaged. How can I change the program that opens my downloads? I'm using latest Firefox on a Windows computer.

How can I get Firefox to stop automatically downloading links? I've selected the "ask me" option in settings and that doesn't stop it. In the past it worked fine but for the last several months I've tried everything and it won't ask me what file to put it in. Now, every PDF gets automatically sent to my Adobe cloud (which I definitely don't want as I'm planning to ditch Adobe at the end of my current subscription) and I have to go through a convoluted work around to even be able to get it downloaded into the file where I need it to be. Can you please help? Thank you! ~ JTucker

Hi Guys,

FireFox keeps saving Torrent links to my Downloads folder even though I have set it to just open the links directly with my torrent client. This is super frustrating having to go into my downloads folder on a daily basis just to delete a laundry list of .torrent files. How do I get this crap to PERMANENTLY stop from downloading and just opening directly with my torrent client?

Mozilla (and this feature of Firefox forcibly downloading files to my drives after being specifically marked to be opened DIRECTLY), is just Mozilla and FireFox purposely & forcefully shortening the lifespan of my SSD's. By forcing these link files to be downloaded to my Downloads folder (filling it up with crap) which in turn is forcing me to constantly delete these (link files) is causing unnecessary extra wear on my SSD!! I live in South Africa where an SSD costs the same as 8 MONTHS worth of utilities (electricity and gas). So we tend not to look kindly on unnecessary wear and tear... especially if there is a function to minimize this but it simply doesn't work as it's supposed to.

Please give me a way to completely and permanently STOP FireFox from downloading these magnet links to my SSD or kindly recommend a better/different browser that doesn't do this.... just like the "old FireFox" didn't.

Thank you.
