I set up a new computer yesterday which is running windows 8.

I downloaded Firefox, then added tree style tabs and colourful tabs after which I powered off for the night. Today on rebooting and opening up Firefox I find that I have a vertical grey bar between my tabs (and same width as them) and the Firefox page. There is no right click options within that large grey area - and of course it's pushing my pages off the right hand side of the screen. How do I get rid of this blasted thing??????

Just today I have started seeing ads popping up from "Articles by Bettersurf". How can I get rid of these? I have Norton Antivirus on my computer... but this is constantly nagging me as I surf the web. I think Foxfire should check into it. I believe they have found a way to get past the pop-up blocker. Thanks, Carolyn

Hiya', folks!

Okay, I did some searching for answers before deciding to ask my question - just to put that out there. Found a few things that seemed on the surface to be related but then, as I read the posts, determined they weren't. So I'm asking my own question:

I have several websites that I can not log on to in Firefox but CAN log onto perfectly fine in other browsers. (As a web designer, I have all the major browsers installed on my system.) For example, my Craig's List login page goes straight to their "404" page. My college Student Information System login goes straight to their "403 - Forbidden" page (note the difference in errors returned). A couple others, as well. NONE of these pages are bookmarked.

I tried to "power refresh" each page (Ctrl+F5). No dice. I tried deleting all my history and cookies. No dice. I tried deleting Firefox completely using iObit Uninstall (but did NOT delete my profile folder as I wasn't prepared to do that, yet) and then re-installing. No dice. I tried disabling ALL add-ons, plug-ins and extensions. No dice. I tried deleting the "cookies.sqlite" file (but did not find a "cookies.sqlite-journal" file as indicated in Troubleshooting). No dice.

So...before I delete my profile folder, shred Firefox completely from my computer and go for a brand new installation, any ideas? If not in my history or cookies folder - or in the cookies.sqlite file - than WHERE on my system are these pages being cached and WHY are they not allowing me to access them through Firefox?

Thanks for any help y'all can provide!

UPDATE! This question is not marked as answered, as the issue is a new 'feature' of Firefox 22, and if you read all the comments you'd see that. Clearly, with the large volume of 'new' answers coming in saying the same thing over and over, people aren't, so I'll say it here: THERE IS NO NEED TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION ANY MORE.

I recently asked about my UI being big and fuzzy, and managed to get that fixed in the about:config, but websites are still big.

For some reason, the default zoom (ctrl+0) is at 120%.

I tried the FullZoom and NoSquint addons, but both had one issue. They messed up the top level image view (which for me works with the old default image style addon) and made the unzoomed image a bit bigger than my screen, and the magnifying glass icon which should appear with a + or - in it when I mouse over the image is just a regular mouse pointer instead.

How can I reset the default zoom to be 100% (or preferably about 80% because even 100 seems to be overcompensating for my high dpi screen) without an addon messing up my default image view?

Further details. If I disable the 'old default image style' addon, the top level image view works fine with the NoSquint or FullZoom addons.

My default search from the address bar has been hijacked by Wikipedia somehow. Yes, I know. Of all things, this hijacking directs my searches to Wikipedia. Only sometimes, though, not all searches are sent there, and I don't know why. I would expect ask.com maybe, but wikipedia. No lies.

I've tried starting in safemode, and I've run malwarebytes several times. I've gotten rid of all of my addons, and nothings changed. Uninstall and reinstall firefox, delete the appdata files, nothing works. I'm even trying a portable version of firefox, and after a short while, I got hijacked again. I'm at a loss.

Is there any known malware that would redirect searches to wikipedia? What steps should I follow to fix this? Does anybody have any idea what could cause this?

I am so annoyed and cannot find solution on your site. Starting about a month ago, when I open Firefox, instead of my Home Page, a page named "Sponsorship" pops up & “urgently” states: (Copy of Screen) "Flash Video Downloader is required to download online video

   100% FREE update
   Watch HD Movies online
   Supports FLV/Flash
Beautiful HD video, faster graphics rendering, and high performance

Download will only takes a couple of minutes" Then asks me to install.

I ignored it multiple times; tried to contact the "producer" asking to desist, but no reply. Norton says the file is VERY New, but (apparently) safe. I checked FireFox Extensions page and a “Featured” Extension, which appears to be this “Flash Video Downloader” is listed, but when I check it out, the Developer seems to be someone different. I finally downloaded the file, but have not yet installed it. And I get a different name and company: InstallPath -Amonetize Ltd. in Israel! Is this legit or a “worm”. If latter, how do I GET RID OF IT? This is the address in the bar when it opens: http://staple.officebusinessupplies.com/t/?ilmernzkvtazn=5A3E8ED3B439D307&pu=&s=D-firefox&nm=ilmernzkvtazn&t= (I just "experimented" and re-opened this link, only to find a different page stating I must update my media player!) There is no consistency, so I am suspicious but I AM SO TIRED OF BEING BOTHERED! Must I uninstall and reinstall Firefox to get rid of it? sure hope not. Thank you in advance for any help in keeping me from going insane!

Weird one here....

I have a Windows 8 PC running dual Samsung T220 screens running from an NVIDIA GeForce GT640. Both monitors have identical settings in the latest driver (always kept up to date) and the only difference is that the primary monitor is connected via a DVI cable and the other via VGA.

With Firefox and ONLY Firefox if I scroll down a page the primary monitor dims IF the website's background is dark or black. If I drag the Firefox window to the secondary monitor it does not dim the screen.

I have tested several other applications and browsers on both screens and ONLY Firefox is doing this and the condition ONLY happens with dark background websites. I have tried various settings in Firefox e.g. on/off for auto scroll, smooth scrolling, hardware acceleration but none of the settings affect this condition.

What could the cause be and how do I stop this from happening- cos it is ***** annoying. :)

After installing or upgrading to Firefox 31, starting Firefox does not show homepage, customize shows a blank page and the option button does not work

I am the Windows admin for a university department and install PCs with Firefox all the time. This problem does not happen with every PC I maintain, only a select few (different model laptops with Windows 8.1 and update 1.) Until today, it only happened with new user accounts (with admin rights) that I setup on the laptops for our staff. Today this happened with The Administrator account while setting up a new laptop. In all cases so far, I install Windows from a saved image that was created using sysprep.

I have tried the many suggestions of resetting Firefox, deleting the users Firefox profile, deleting the users Windows profile, uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox, uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox and the latest Java, but nothing helps. After uninstalling, I run an app to delete temp files and caches and will even manually remove registry keys HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla and HKCU\SOFTWARE\Mozilla. Plus I reboot and make sure the install folder is deleted after uninstall.

Results are the same: after installing Firefox 31, the initial setup window for migrating IE and/or Chrome pops up and after clicking the Finish button, Firefox starts, but does not show the initial new user page, only a blank page. Clicking on the Options button (3 bars) does nothing. Right-clicking in the proper area, the popup menu appears so I can choose to Customize, but that only opens another tab with about:customize in the URL and the page is blank. From the right-click popup menu, I can enable the Menu Bar and get to Options from that.

My latest attempt has helped a little. I uninstalled Firefox 31, cleaned up, deleted user Firefox profile, rebooted and then installed Firefox 30. Inital startup runs, and tells me I'm not up to date, and the Options button works. But I still cannot customize.

I then upgraded to Firefox 31, but then it's back to no startup page, no options button and no customize. I can downgrade to 30 and get all but customize working again.

Only Addon is one for McAfee Scriptscan for Firefox 15.1.0, which just after installing is disabled.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
