Why aren't the monospace fonts displaying fixed length whitespace in Firefox 4?

I have written several applications for browser-based DNA sequence analysis that rely on the fixed glyph width of monospace fonts to insure proper alignment of DNA sequences and the protein(s) they encode. Because exact alignment is necessary, the page contents are presented within the scope of a <pre> style directive. In Firefox 4 the space character has a smaller glyph width than other characters, creating misalignment that severely reduces the accuracy and intelligibility of the page. The problem does not appear to be font-specific.

Since the original post I have created a test page that demonstrates the problem here. The page passes in Safari5, Chrome11, IE9 and fails in FF4.

I upgraded a couple days ago, and just noticed that I cannot open a 'new' window, only tabs in the original window that opens when I initially click the FF icon. I've tried both command-N and clicking file/new window from the menu. If I right-click a tab and select 'move to new window' the tab just goes away - no new window appears. New tabs open without an issue. I've rebooted, but it doesn't help.

I'm running macbook pro 13", 8g ram/1t drive - shouldn't be resource starved. Doesn't appear to matter what else (if anything) is running. The only plug-in I've installed is Adblock.

My previous installation (3.something - was current) 'lost' all my plugins somehow - they showed in the list, but wouldn't run; I removed them all but it wouldn't let me re-install any (I forget the error). That seemed to all get fixed when I upgraded to 4; adblock installed and runs like normal. Not sure if there is any relation, but thought I'd mention it.

Thoughts?

Firefox for me has been fine for the past couple of years or so. Then all of a sudden about 5 months ago, everytime i would use Firefox it would crash after browsing for about 1 minute. I uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times to no avail. I then got sick of the problem and then used IE till now. However, i heard about Firefox 4 and thought maybe this would fix it. Unfortunately, the same problem occurred! I then heard about being able to start Firefox with add-ons disabled to find any sources of problems, and i've found that the cause if Flash! It is the newest version and always has been, so i don't know what i can do, since Flash is important for most websites nowadays!?

I just upgraded to FF4 and was surprised to see that Arial Black wasn't rendering. My css validates and have never had an issue rendering our Arial Black on any browser - as of now FF4 is the only browser that doesn't support Arial Black. Chrome, Safari, IE9, and Opera all display my fonts as I specified in the css. Being a web designer I seek uniformity across all browsers.

In options I have Show my windows and tabs from last time set for When Firefox starts. And I unchecked the warn me when closing multiple tabs option (although it was previously checked, and it wasn't warning me when it was checked).

The last few days I have had 1 window with 4 tabs open (each to a different site) when I exited Firefox. The next day when I start firefox it ends up opening 4 windows each showing about:blank. My tabs are not restored.

I have NOT cleared my history or any other information.

Hello, and first of all thank you for reading.

After restarting Firefox 4 (for any reason, e.g. add-ons), all the custom new toolbars will be missing.

I tried recreating them with or without certain tools to see if it was a specific tool that was preventing the entire toolbar from loading. No results though.

My opinion so far is that Firefox is unable to save any setting for some unknown reason. But then again is able to save bookmarks, add-ons and history... So the problem really is with the toolbars ONLY.

I've been using Firefox for a very long time, but this is the first time this happens to me.

The platform I'm using Firefox on is a Mac with OS X 10.6. I am not sure if this issue happens only on Macs or not.

Any help is welcome! Thank you.

I want to set it to google(like the old home page) but I dont see an option to change it. I am aware I could just find the url for the old start page and use that but it would be nice to use the new one. anyone know how to change it?

Identity Safe is a part of Norton and it keeps your login info safe. There was a little icon in the toolbar of the last version of FF and it's gone now.

I'm not sure if this Norton piece considered a plugin or extension but I use it throughout the day.
