With the release of Firefox 8.0.1, Firefox bypasses Windows Software Restriction Policy (SRP).

With Firefox 8.0.0 - (and previous), Firefox conformed to the policy set forth in SRP.

In addition to the fact that Firefox completely ignores Windows SRP, Firefox also ignores Windows User Account Control. Standard, non-admin, accounts are able to install Firefox without administrative privileges. When the user executes the Firefox installer, Windows UAC prompts the user to elevate to install the program. If the user clicks "no" the Firefox installer continues past UAC and installs the program in the user's %appdata%\local folder instead of the %programfiles% (if the user were to elevate). Any other program would have ceased the installation if not elevated.

I haven't seen any other software ignore SRP and continue to run and/or bypass UAC and continue to install.

Please advise on what software policy needs to be in place to prevent Firefox from being installed and ran on my domain.

I've noticed significant differences in Gmail is Firefox compared with Google Chrome / Safari etc.

  • Scrolling between messages using the j/k keyboard shortcuts is extremely slow in Firefox
  • The window scrollbar does not look the same either.

Does anyone know the reason for this? Why is Gmail so slow in Firefox?

Select part of a web page, right click it and "search Google for ....." appears.

This feature works perfectly when I am in the UK, but I travel and currently it searches Thailand version of Google - I want it to search the UK version of Google.

Is there any way to force Firefox to search Google.co.uk and not Google.com?

The computer will be used only for online catalog access in my library. I need to remove the location toolbar, but keep the back buttons and home button. If I use Kiosk mode, I don't have the back buttons. I can set it up so that I have the buttons but not the URL, but a user could right click on the menu bar and re-enable the location bar. I need to prevent them from doing that. Thanks!

I would like to see all of my tabs in the tab bar without having to scroll. I realize this "shrinks" the tab, sometimes to where they are not readable, but that's what I want.

I open about 20 stock pages and I can easily read the symbol of the stock when the tab is very small. The tab scroll bars and "drop down list" are very cumbersome. Is there something I can change in my about:config to get this back?

Thanks, Gene

About 50% or more of the time when I click on a link or go to a bookmark or website I get a fail message - Firefox cannot find the server - and have to "Try Again" or reload. This has only started since I got version 8 (I now have 8.0.1)

It does not happen in Chrome - so it does not seem to be my internet connection. But it happens in all versions of Firefox now.

It is getting irritating (5 weeks) to have to load every website twice. They always come up eventually - so it is not the particular websites.

My 8.0.1 version does not have either "symbol" or "Wingdings" fonts listed and when I render my html document those characters end up using the Arial font. I have the same problem with Firefox 8 and Firefox 9. I initially installed v9 yesterday and when I saw this problem, I removed it and installed v8. But it did not go away.

Let me put additional informations on this:

- this is not about a missing image. This is about one additional black box area appearing on top of the normal Firefox window. This area is not supposed to be there.

- a black box area sometimes appears on top of a Firefox Menu when it is first displayed and I have to move my mouse over it to refresh the sections my mouse goes over

- a black box area sometimes appears after a Firefox menu has diseapeared and that box occupies the same area and same size as the menu that was there

- a black box area sometimes appears at the bottom left side of the Firefox window (same area where the status is displayed but covering a bigger area) when my mouse hovers an HTML link, buttons, .... any HTML part that sends you else where or makes a window/popup appear

- the black box area is the equivalent of having an image displayed on the screen but that image is actually a random memory address, therefore you see dots and lines just like you have a corrupted image.

- I installed the latest version of Flash just now and it is still happening. Less often but still happening.

Because this looks like displaying corrupted memory informations, I am now thinking that maybe my Firefox will not be stable and crash. I am now thinking to go back to v3.6 if this is not fixed soon.

How can this be still going on as a problem since version 8 and not be addressed officially with a fix ?

My PC configuration : AMD Athlon XP+ 3000, 3Gb Memory, 2 HD where the OS is on one HD and all temp folders are on the other one, Windows XP SP3, ATI HD4650 graphic card, DirextX 9.0c, Motherboard MSI-6712, current resolution used 1024x768x32
