If I want to add a proxy settings only for local addresses I can not do this. In IE I only have to add "*.*" in the exceptions list, but in FireFox the symbol "*" does not work in this way. Is there another way to do that without typing every top domain in the exception list?

My problems with high CPU usage by Firefox started a few weeks ago. Here are the fixes I've tried so far:

quitting firefox and opening new browser window: helps briefly, but screen freezes start again within a minute or two, sometimes right away

restarting computer: doesn't help any more than quitting and restarting firefox

clearing cache and history: did not help (have done this repeatedly)

disabling extensions: did not help

updating firefox again: did not help

uninstalling firefox, removing all hidden folders, clean reinstall: seemed to fix problem initially, but after a few days, I'm right back where I started

running firefox --debug with gdb installed: gdb found no debugging symbols

turning off chat in Facebook: did not help

I am currently running Firefox 10.0.2 with Linux Mint 9 (Isadora). My configuration is x86_64-linux-gnu. I generally keep browser tabs open for email, Words with Friends (my only regular use of Facebook) and Ravelry, with one or two other tabs open as needed for other tasks.

Possibly useful information from my system information summary: Processor : 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU, 550 @ 3.20GHz Memory: 5922MB (1268MB used)

Since the clean re-install of Firefox, I have only added one extension (Add to Search Bar 2.0) and re-imported my bookmarks list. The other extension and add-ons (which I presume came with the install) include Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.9.3, IcedTea Web Browser NPR Plugin, iTunes application detector, and Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102. Just for grins, I tried disabling them all again, and it made no difference. All system updates are current. I've been keeping my system monitor open and each time my browser freezes, I'm seeing 100% CPU usage by Firefox (actually, as high as 120%, although I don't know how that is possible).

Any other suggestions? I'm really motivated to keep using Firefox, but I'm not sure what else to try. Thanks.

I was looking for images of various PDAs on Google. One of the images obviously resided on a sketchy site, since I got a popup window saying that a I had a virus (or somesuch) and that I should scan my computer. I encountered a few windows in my tale of woe, so I can't recall whether this first one was an actual Windows window or one of those windows that are part of the webpage. When I tried to close the tab, I got two popups (I think they were real Windows windows). One asked for permission to download and exe file while another said that the web page wanted me to confirm that I actually wanted to navigate away from the page. The latter, I've seen before; the former, well that's obviously malware. However, I wasn't confident about any windows anymore. What if I clicked on the Cancel for downloading the exe, but it was a phony Cancel that actually downloaded the exe? What about the confirmation to navigate away, is there a way for malware designers to fake such a window so that if I confirm, it will actually do something else?

And what if the answers to both were "no" as far as anyone knows at present, but it is theoretically possible for the answer to be "yes" (which means that it will likely happen at some undetermined time in future, given the resourcefulness of people)? Because of this last possibilty, I figure that best possible way to close such a tab is for a browser to allow the user to tyranically close a tab without any questions or confirmations. I don't want to the firefox window because I have other tabs that want to retain. (I'm not even sure it would been allowed to go ahead in the presence of the popup windows). I don't quite recall, but I might have killed the firefox process in the task manager, but if I restart firefox and restore tabs, the bad tab will also be restored.

So is there a way to forcibly close a tab, no questions asked?

I upgraded to version 10.0.2 last week & all the favicons disappeared leaving a grey box. Some returned when I went to the website but not all & there are over 200 of them.

Thursday, March 08, 2012 I’ve tired all the recommended fixes & none of them have completely solved the problem. The blank box shows up in the address bar & the tab even if there’s a favicons in the bookmark list ! The strange thing is it did the same thing to Internet Explorer. Must have change something in the registry.

All the favicons have 1 icon. I‘ve updated Firefox at least 7 times & this version 10.0.2 is a real mess.

Have made weekly backups on my system & may have to go back to a older version.
