I got a very official looking red screen with the Firefox logo titled "Urgent Firefox update". It had the normal looking opening file box asking me if I wanted to save the file: firefox-patch.exe, a binary file from https://ahghointernetno.net . I closed the window and started researching if this was real. I did make a print screen copy to WordPad but was unable to upload it here do to unsupported file type.

Have updated Firefox and always make sure I have downloaded the recent version but keep getting spam pop-ups which is absolutely ridiculous. I could be reading an email OR an article and the spam pop-ups will bring the red screen and ask me to download. I always have to pay extra attention that I don't "download" and allow POS spammers to take over my life. Amazing Firefox is not aware of these spam pop-ups OR just don't care !!!!!

Today's spam pop-up: firefox-pahl.js - https//oochaons96.org

I was just interrupted in my browsing by a "flash screen" which had the Firefox logo and a dialogue asking me to download a Patch. I've downloaded by not opened the patch to install it. This is the first time in decades of computer work that I've every seen anything like this. Is this a legit Firefox patch? Or some sort of hack?

Starting around the beginning of this month (July) I get prompted once a day or so to update Firefox. Each day is a different link, I know it isn't Firefox actually trying to update. I've seen many other people voicing the same concerns. I've run Malwarebytes and Windows Defender and they haven't found anything. The first time this popped up earlier this month, Windows Defender activated saying it had blocked malware: trojan/kovner if I remember correctly. It doesn't matter what site I'm on, usually just browsing Reddit non external links. Once a day. I took a screenshot of the site of the day (July 13th around 3am) early this morning and will add it to the post.

It would be so helpful if we could create an account to reply to existing threads rather than starting up a new one, but since we can't, I guess I'll have to use this method.

The firefox "urgent update" malware is definitely alive and well. Another company's website where this is being delivered up as a paid advertisement, and the one that I always get redirected to it from, is http://fiostrending.verizon.com/news/

These companies really need to choose a better source for their advertisements, if they insist on forcing them on their customers, if their sites are being hijacked by this malware!

Interestingly enough, the hit-and-run website that I'm being redirected to NEVER shows up in my browsing history.

firefox-patch.js

Browser page opens with firefox logo on it and says it's an urgent update.

Always happens in the tab where I am using mail.com email client. Not sure that matters, but saying it just in case.

I opened my e-mail (Yahoo webmail) in Firefox, then opened Chrome to play Pandora and opened a VPN connection... when I looked back at Firefox, a new tab had opened with this web site: https://haeranasscom.org/1961165911159/8c6073d96a2cf521e68f99b5891decd8.html which was prompting me to install an 'urgent firefox update'. The web page also had a popup which appeared to indicate that the update had already been downloaded and I just had to install it. The downloads folder has no record of this purported update file, so the whole thing is fishy.

I wanted to quickly post this as a community service, but if there are any suggestions on how to avoid having these kinds of third-party fishing antics appear in Firefox, I'm all ears! This is quite unusual for me to see.

I have been having this malware come up like others but it recently changed. Before, it just opened in a new tab. Now, it actually loads as a new page on the current tab; even if nothing is clicked and my hands are physically off the keyboard and mouse. Additionally, it automatically tries to download a file but I am able to stop it without it running (as far as I know). Like mentioned before, the link to the page is white when followed. I have only been having this issue on one site, reddit and more specifically reddit.com/r/totalwar.

What happens each time is that sometimes when I click a link to either a forum post, the comments, or an imgur post. After the page loads and a few seconds pass, the 'Urgent Update' page loads and replaces the page that was intended. It then does what I described above. For me, no other sites have this issue but I wanted to contribute to try and help this seemingly growing issue. Are there any solutions or steps that have been identified thus far?

A scammer is taking over CNN.com's page, pretending to be a Firefox update, and I captured the URL this time.

The URL was:

https://eekiewanknews.net/8981613244252/efa132387dde53efa4fde122b6b57d7a.html

It used the Firefox logo on a similarly-colored background as you use. A popup also appeared. I stopped the browser, scanned for viruses and found none, and restarted and came here to report. Perhaps this will help you determine who is behind hacking Firefox.

Thank you again for all you do.
