Until about a month ago, every time I clicked on a download link to save a file, Firefox asked whether I want to save the file to my downloads folder, or to just open it, which would save it to a folder in my temp folder that would be deleted when I close Firefox.

Now, out of nowhere, it doesn't ask the question anymore, it automatically assumes I want to save it to a folder (instead of "opening" it).

Before anyone tells me to go to Settings -> General -> Applications, and set the file types to "Always ask", I have tried, and there are two problems with it:

  • There are only a few file types in that list. While I can set Firefox to ask when downloading those types of files, anything else (like text files or MP3 files) is saved to the downloads folder without asking. I want it to ask what to do with any file, not just the specific file types in that list.
  • Even for the file types that are available in the list, if I choose to open a file instead of downloading, it is still saved to my downloads folder instead of the temp folder, and is not deleted after I close Firefox.

Also, I'm using Manjaro Linux with KDE, and I also have the Plasma Integration extension installed on Firefox.

The behavior of FireFox saving PDF files has changed. I am using WIN10, FireFox 98.0.1 and have it setup to use windows default application and always ask where to save for PDFs.

BEFORE the problem: The PDF opens in Acrobat Pro IX. After clicking save I would be asked, where to save. I select the location to save the PDF. Then after this, subsequent PDFs downloaded would be saved to the last saved location. This process would repeat for a new website PDF load and save. This is the behavior I want now.

NOW with the problem: The PDF opens in Acrobat Pro IX. 1. Immediately, after a reboot, the save icon on Adobe is grayed out. I select save as and point to the desired directory. 2. For any subsequent PDF opened, the Adobe save icon is available. Files are saved to the desktop.

Please note I believe I once did get a popup asking where to save and I know I selected desktop. Since that selection I am no longer asked where to save.

Please note I have looked and tried some of the suggestions at: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cant-download-or-save-files#w_choose-a-different-download-folder

but some of this advice needs to be updated for the new FireFox version--ex no JSON file is found at the file location covered in the advice.

I believe this issue started after the last FireFox update. Please help me restore behavior listed above under “BEFORE the problem”. Thanks.

I moved my computer from NM (Mountain Time) to VA (Eastern Time). Windows has reset to ET. The computer is ET, but anything in Firefox is two hours off. My incoming emails (outlook.com) are all timestamped two hours earlier than reality. Items in website (Google) calendars all disappear two hours early, though I have reset my Google calendar to ET. How can I reset Firefox to my current time zone?

How do I get LIBREOFFICE to work in FF? D/L went fine. It's an AFTER D/L ERROR: requires a 64-bit Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE. FF won't work with JAVA though. Can't find workaround add-on.

LibreOffice error: LibreOffice requires a 64-bit Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE and restart LibreOffice. https://hub.libreoffice.org/InstallJava/?LOlocale=en-US

I found nothing in FF extensions add-ons to facilitate this program/app. FF won't work with JAVA files but they provided no alternative. LibreOffice is the only free Office-like program/app. that is currently up and working today that I can find on any list I've pulled via browser on the first page or two.

It is so confusing to go to Edge or Chrome to use it - and hard to move things from FF over to Edge to get to LibreOffice - can't follow what I'm doing that way. I want to use FF. I feel safer there.

I don't trust downloading from random sites. Bait and switch for files. Malware. If there are is a trust-worthing d/l workaround pls tell me. I;m not up on them - not in the loop.

I need assistive technology really - this is just a start for me to get organized. You can give me advise on what keeps you swift and organized if you can too. Appreciate that much too. Thanks for any help.

Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help with this. I recently signed into a shared computer with my personal Firefox account, and it automatically imported all my history, my browser extensions, and bookmarks, including personal/secure information that I wouldn't want on a shared computer. I tried signing out and deleting the sites and login information, even going so far as to completely delete all of my browsing history and cookies and signing in with another account, but all the supposedly deleted history and logins and extensions were then transferred to this second account. I have deleted all my data, even uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, and all the data from my personal account keeps haunting me as suggestions when I type in the task bar or suggested usernames when I log in to websites. How can I actually delete this information so it's not on a shared computer? Thank you!

In the past week or so something seems to have changed with Firefox whereby any time I go to open a file Firefox is first saving the file to the Downloads folder on my computer before opening. This never used to happen before as I was always given the option to just open the file or save it.

I have tried adjusting the settings and I have got Firefox to ask about opening the files, but it is still saving them to the Downloads folder automatically.

Can someone help with what changed and how I can revert it back to the how it performed a few weeks ago?

Firefox 98.0.1 will not load some web pages that other browsers will. I get a message about Network Protocol Error with the option to "Try Again" which hasn't worked. I've tried many of the fixes suggested here but nothing changes. If I copy the link Firefox won't open and paste it in Brave or Opera the link loads fine. I don't want to quit Firefox but I can't spend time every day trying to fix it either.

Is there a firefox addon or method that will either engage the download manager of your choice, or catch and direct the download to your preferred download, much like Flashgot used to do in pre-Quantum days?

I use Free Download Manager. I have two addons related to it, but they are not a perfect solution. FDM has an option to "intercept downloads in your browser", but it's a kinda clumsy process.

I recently deleted the file with firefox settings (can't remember the name) cause i was unable to what netflix/hbo. now however, whenever i open firefox my pinned tabs (16 tabs) does not reload the pages as in does not refresh the content of the page. it use to refresh the page inside these pinned tabs when i open firefox but now the pages are still the old version. i have to refresh these pinned tabs manually.

so is there any settings to make these pinned tabs to actually refresh the page when i open firefox? i'm confuse why firefox it still shows that its loading the page cause it actually show the same page content that was a day before.

Changes to how file downloads are handled in Firefox version 98 is a breaking change. Before this, FF understood that there are 2 different reasons why a file might be downloaded:

  1. Because the User explicitly wants to save a file for later reference - these files were saved to a directory chosen by the User in Settings
  2. Because the System needs to save a file e.g. in order to invoke an external handler such as a PDF viewer - these files were saved to a TEMP directory, and not controlled by Settings

Now under v98 both types of files are saved to the same location - e.g. my Desktop. So my Desktop is now full of files I consider to be temporary and useless!

Please restore the old behavior of 2 different locations for the 2 different types of download.

(Reverting to v97 in the meantime)

Thanks!

How to make attached files in email open up without requiring saving the file before viewing

Recently, I purchased some software to scrub my hard drive due to my Dell Desktop running slow. That is when the way I normally access emailed attached files changed. Normally, if I receive a WORD or EXCEL (MS file) in email, I can open the email and access the attachment without having to download and save to my desktop or hard drive. I have changed all settings in the Privacy Area / Trust Area of MS but this did not change anything. MS Representatives stated I would need to use Outlook to make this work, but I know it will work without using Outlook. I think the Scrubbing / Cleaning software I purchased changed a setting with my email for safety purposes since there is risk in opening a file directly from email. Any suggestions on how to change back to how this worked previously - without having to download and save the file? Thanks for your help.
