Hi!

When Firefox 96.0 rolled out on my machine, I was surprised to see my old Firefox Quantum theme default to dark. I did not enjoy this new behavior, so I tried to downgrade to 95.0.2. After installing it, Firefox told me it couldn't load the user profile, as it was used on a newer version of Firefox.

I have no idea where exactly I read this, but some website contained an instruction to erase compatibility.ini and that would allow me to use the profile on older versions. Tried that and it actually worked. I did notice that, when Firefox tried to update, it would say it failed. I was hoping that, once I find a solution to the forced dark mode and I update Firefox, the problem would go away.

Fast forward a few weeks, I found AutoConfig and browser.theme.toolbar-theme option in about:config. So I updated Firefox manually and applied AutoConfig and my original problem was gone.

Fast forward more weeks, there is another update for Firefox. And Firefox was still unable to automatically update. So I tried reconstructing compatibility.ini, which I did fully. But Firefox still won't update.

At this point, it's been like 3 months with a crippled user profile and I must say I'm tired of updating Firefox manually.

Is there any way I can fix this profile? If not, what exactly should I copy over so all my preferences, cookies, addons and themes get carried over to a new one?

PLEASE help me find a way around this 'so called' improvement of auto downloading any attachment or file to my Downloads folder without any choice from me. I have checked the 'always ask' in General settings, waste of time. When prompt asks what you want to do, it auto downloads even if you say open and do NOT check save option. This is MAJOR frustrating, makes extra work for me to have to remember to go back to Downloads to delete all these files. We should have the right to make that decision on whether or not we want to save it to our computers and take up space. I view many files daily, most are NEVER saved...PLEASE either UNDO this feature you have implemented or give us a way to work around it, ie: make the General settings option actually apply as to what we select, at present this option is NOT working.

I downloaded a Windows 10 update last night. It was Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267202 (Version 1.361.793.0). Now, I cannot open Firefox. When I click on Firefox for around half a second I see an error box that says "Open Firefox in troubleshooting mode?" and nothing else, with no option to click yes, then the box closes. The same thing happens when I try to run firefox.exe -p to change profiles. I also cannot open Tor Browser, and I am wondering if there is a connection. I have tried uninstalling Firefox using the uninstall tool and reinstalling but I have the same issue. I uninstalled the windows update and opened Firefox. This time, it had the "Open Firefox in troubleshooting mode?" box but I could actually click on the yes option, and Firefox opened. However, when I clicked on the option to get a fresh install and remove the extensions, Firefox closed and I am back to the same place of it not being able to open again.

I rebooted my Mac (OS X 12.3, MacBook Pro M1) and now I cannot launch Firefox. If I try to launch from the command line, I get:

I don't think I have anything odd set up on my computer, nor have I messed with Firefox at all.

I attempted downloading a new copy of Firefox and installed it, but nothing changed.

Any ideas for how to get Firefox running again?

I have tried everything I can think of, but cannot see those messages. All the messages I see beging with one week ago. Any ideas? I hope I hope. Many thanks.

During a recent update, my download preferences automatically/mysteriously changed from "always ask" to "save file" in regards to opening online documents (most notably PDFs). No big deal: I was able to go and change it back to "always ask" for a few file types in the settings.

What I realized today, however, is that even though I'm still checking the "open with Firefox" option, the file is still downloading to my computers primary/permanent storage (in the downloads folder) instead of the cache that gets cleared upon restart (like it used to). At that point, I might as well have just hit the "save" button; I don't want to download the file, I just want to view it in Firefox then have it gone when I'm done.

Any ideas why this might be or how I might fix it? Thank you, Cole C.

Basically, a requested relaunch blanked my profile and I can't get it back.

I have a lengthy workaround that will take over an hour to fix from backups, before this incident, but I'd really like to understand what's going on. How can my add-ons, bookmarks, history, logins, etc. be gone? If I did a refresh on purpose, why would my shortcuts remain intact? And, I started by backing up my profile folder to a neutral spot, so why isn't replacing it reversing the changes?

As background: The "about:profiles/Restart With Add-ons disabled" button brings up a small button dialogue to choose "refresh" or default "open." I selected "open" because I didn't want to fix my profile and assumed I would relaunch with only add-ons disabled, so this was a potential point of screw-up. I assume selecting "refresh" would reset application defaults and make a mess exactly like I find myself in now. Shouldn't "Restart with Add-ons disabled/Open" relaunch a temporary and reversible state? Doesn't "refresh" prompt a new default profile?

Considering evidence only, it appears I did something to roast my profile before I backed it up, but that's strange and really out in the weeds, and I'm assuming I wrecked it with my current activity.

The default profile name and path are correct. My shortcut links and labels that I use for a home page are intact but with icons missing, the same appearance as if I deleted the cache; is this detail part of application settings and not profile?

Firefox,

I have Kaspershy for my internet security. One of its features is a program called 'Safe Money'. With this program I can safely do banking business...except for one bank. Every time I select this bank, I am prompt to download a browser. I downloaded your browser several time to update. It never works! The closest time I cam to it working your site was suppose to send me a verification number...never did, until an hour later. Didn't need it then, it was too late. Please fix this problem, I don't want to keep on downloading your browser that doesn't work! Again I downloaded your browser, and again no verification number was sent.

Hello, Our desktop computer's hard drive recently went bad. In the process of diagnosing the hard drive failure, my partner uninstalled our Firefox browser. The account had several securely generated passwords connected to important email accounts that we had not written down. We have had a new hard drive installed, and a fresh copy of Windows 7 pro (we know, it's old and unsupported, but my husband likes it and it works fine for his needs). Our service person was able to save a lot of data from the old hard drive, but we're puzzled as to if we can still access the Firefox account having the necessary passwords. We have also acquired a laptop that runs Windows 10, and our service person transferred the old data onto it and also gave us the old hard drive for safekeeping. Both the desktop and the laptop have a .JSON file folder of bookmarks from the old hard drive. Any hope for password recovery? Thanks.

Hello,

after installing 98.01 recently a tab was opened that informed about a feature for Firefox installations on smartphones: the site said that it is possible to continue my work where I stopped before, including open tabs, bookmarks etc.

I don't have a smartphone - I only use firefox on my notebook. Since I'm considering to buy a new notebook in the upcoming weeks I ask myself how it is possible to migrate my current firefox installastion to a new notebook. Especially I'd like to have all my open tabs, bookmarks and cookies back after having installed firefox on the new notebook.

How can I do this? GreetZ and thanks a lot in advance!
