I was trying to change the time emails are kept on the server so I went into "Account Settings" and now Thunderbird is locked onto this page. I get a "Mozilla Thunderbird not responding" message when I try and click on anything and I can't get out of this page nor access my Inbox. I've tried starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode which didn't work. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of Thunderbird but when it starts it goes straight back to the frozen "Account Settings" page. I've checked my profile and there is a new profile that was created with today's date. There is also a profile from June 2025. If the old profile contains all my emails and folders up to yesterday, that would be OK.

Every so often a message pops up that a folder can't be compacted because it's in use.

I don't understand why TB bothers users with this message. Compacting folders is supposed to be invisible to the user. It'll get compacted eventually, so no user action is required.

If I'm missing something, please educate me.

And if not, what's the best chance of getting it removed? Should I submit a bug report and argue that it's a bug in the design? Is a suggestion likely to do anything?

For years, I have been routing all my Gmails through Thunderbird very seamlessly. Then my computer crashed.

Nothing on my hard drive was retrievable...so I had to download Thunderbird onto my new computer. I then proceeded to move all my Gmail to this newly downloaded Thunderbird. I had many different files in Thunderbird on my old computer, so everything was tidy and easy to find. When I opened Gmail after losing my old computer, I was relieved to see that the files, and the way I had them organized was the same. So, I assumed it would transfer over to the newly downloaded Thunderbird that way.

However, when I moved all my Gmails to the newly downloaded Thunderbird, all 3200+ Gmail emails were lumped into Thunderbird's "inbox".

What can I do to get everything back into their folders like they were before?

My Tags window & folder [View, Folders, Tags] layout stopped properly displaying all my items with the appropriate "tag" set in the past few updates to T'bird. I recently switched to version 140.4.0esr but the problem existed before that in 140.2.1 as well. Is there any way to force a "rebuild" of the Tags window so that all my tagged items show in their appropriate categories, with appropriate statuses [read/unread, etc]? Otherwise, the Tag feature is no longer useful.

I was having massive issues with TB when it auto updated from 142 to 143. Then last week, just when I thought I had everything restored, the damn program auto updated to 144.

I still can not "delete" messages or send anything.

I downgraded to 140.3.1 at least with that version I could delete messages. But I still could not send anything. TB send would time out and a window would pop up asking me to "sign in with my ISP".

And like others that have posted, I too lost folders on the new updates.

This whole series, 14x is a bust IMO.

Thunderbird as thing email (IMAP) client with working search (gloda) - how to? (or feature request)

Hey Thunderbird has a well-functioning Search function that uses the cache (or rather, what the background search process/function "read" and saved in global-messages-db… (read more)

Hey

Thunderbird has a well-functioning Search function that uses the cache (or rather, what the background search process/function "read" and saved in global-messages-db.sqlite).

With a newly configured account (IMAP), it works like this:

- establishes the directory tree - downloads message titles (including sender, date, etc.) - *.msf summary files - then a process that downloads the entire message for local storage - in the background, an indexing process (GLODA?) starts, which creates a search database (subject, from, to, keywords in the message body) using the global-messages-db.sqlite file.

For very large mailboxes (>100k msg, ~50GB), this means that the server's content is transferred to the local disk (and stored in ImapMail).

The question is: how do I configure TB to run in "thin" mode, meaning after connecting a new account: - establish a directory tree - download message titles (including sender, date, etc.) -> *.msf - DO NOT download messages for local storage - start the indexing process, which will download and index the subject, from, to, and keywords in the message body (it will download and "read" the message, but not save it locally) and save it to global-messages-db.sqlite

Setting "mail.server.default.offline_download" to "false" will cause this behavior, but the message body will not be indexed (only from, to, and subject).

I tried to work around this by: - configuring the mailbox with the download option for offline use - waiting for it to download - setting "mail.server.default.offline_download" to "false" - deleting all "cur" directories (I use maildir) or deleting all *.eml files from the ImapMail directory.

Content search works for messages that have been downloaded (and indexed) previously; it doesn't work for new messages.

Why am I trying this? Some people have "air" laptops (meaning - weaker processors, small SSDs) and need access to email (via IMAP), including full search, without having all their email downloaded locally.

In other words, how can I configure TB via IMAP to: - download the directory and subdirectory tree - download the headers of all messages - "read" and index all messages (including their content) and store them in "global-messages-db.sqlite," but not store all messages locally (online mode only)?

Regards Chris

I have have had a Gmail address for a few years and have just created a new Gmail address, I am trying to copy about 20,000 emails from the original Gmail IMAP folders to local Thunderbird folders as a backup, and then copy them to the new Gmail address IMAP folders.

I have tried copying these in smaller amounts as suggested (between 200 and 500 at once) This seems to go well, however, when I have completed the task the original folder has a much higher amount of messages in it than the new one, so some messages are being lost along the way.

Is there a reliable method to do this, such as closing Thunderbird and then copying and pasting data held in the profile folder, or does it need to be done with Thunderbird running?

Many Thanks in advance

Just what it says. Using the latest version of Thunderbird on Windows 11 Pro.

I have had my usa.net account use the same IMAP settings forever; I double-checked my settings and they are correct.

Now, I get a LOT of email on that account -- I typically download it when I hit 10K messages. This usually isn't a problem.

I tried moving all of my current Inbox (already in TBird) to my archives. I was then able to download about 1K messages and then it stalled downloading. Said I either didn't have write access to the disk or had a file permission. I'm not seeing anything on the web interface for usa.net on this.

Now, I have 3 other IMAP accounts on T-bird -- 1 is never used (default from my ISP), a 2nd is very light traffic (mostly I stick with that email provider because they are small and still have private shell accounts) and the 3rd is my business vanity domain--high traffic but not the same as usa.net (where I get ALL my receipts for any online purchases, daily newsletters, help forums, etc).

Any idea what may be going on? Please be kind; I am not a programmer, just a more tech-savvy than the average bear (as in if IT is busy at work people ask me for regular stuff).

If any more info/filedump stuff is needed to see what's going on, please do let me know and I will tag it up asap.

Thanks again, community!

My email provider is terminating the existing email domain name, and replacing it with a new domain name. I want to retain all existing Thunderbird folders and emails for use with the new email. Example: username@q.com becomes username@myclk.com. (Yep, it's Centurylink.)

Can I change my existing Thunderbird account name and email and retain all existing folders and emails in the account? Some server settings would also be changed.

Or, do I need to set up a new account?

Thanks

Recently I have noticed some changes in the way my Thunderbird downloads POP3 messages. Previously, it would be common to ask for new messages once a day and receive upwards of one hundred of them. But in the last month, this number has been limited to about 35 at a time. If I ask immediately again, I get about 35 more, and this pattern continues as long as there are messages in queue waiting to be downloaded. I am not sure if this is due to changes in gmail, where most of my received messages originate, or to changes in Thunderbird itself, or to some sort of third-party hack. Now that I have trained myself to keep on asking until there are no more messages coming down, this change does not cause me much difficulty, although initially it sometimes caused me to overlook messages because I failed to keep asking as long as I should have. Apart from that, it does not seem to be harmful as far as I can tell. I'd just like to know if other people have noticed anything similar, and if anyone knows what is causing it, and whether it has some hidden advantages over the way things used to work.

Sorry for the long=winded message but I figured it would save time to explain the steps from the beginning.

I've been using Thunderbird as an OSB for my archived messages from Apple Mail. In that scenario I create a .mbox file of all messages I want to save from a particular year and then import that into Thunderbird into a local folder with the year as the folder name. The version of Thunderbird where I was doing that is 115.10.1

I started testing Thunderbird version 139.0.2 as an Apple Mail replacement with only 2 of my email accounts.

Now I want to convert entirely out of Apple Mail. First I made a backup copy of the entire Thunderbird folder located in the User/Library folder onto an external hard drive that I then disconnected from my computer.

Then I downloaded the latest version 145.0 (aarch64) and installed it. (I still have the other 2 versions on my system) I opened it up and got into the profile manager (troubleshooting then about profiles) and discovered that I have 4 of them. I made the one that contains my archive the primary one. It does not have any connections to a live email account. I've only ever imported an .mbox file. Everything that I've archived is there. This is profile Number 1. I renamed it Archive so I could keep track of it.

Then I opened up each of the other 3 profiles in a new browser in sequence to see what they were.

It appears as if I have one that is empty. it opens up wanting me to set up an existing email address. I closed that one down. It's called Profile number 2.

The next one appears to be the current one for the 2 test email accounts. It has them properly configured, showing messages in the inbox and with the messages that are supposed to be archived off in the local folders I had created as I expect. I am calling this one profile number 3.

The third one first had me add the passwords for the 2 test accounts and then it is pretty close to number number 3 but is missing some of the local folders. This is called profile number 4.

Want I want to end up with is 1 profile. I would prefer to start with the one that has all my archive messages in their local folders, and then add the test accounts including all their messages from profile number 3 with its local folders. Once they are safely moved and part of the Archive profile I would like to delete all three numbered profiles. Once I am down to only one active profile and no others lurking about I plan to slowly start adding the rest of my email accounts moving them one by one out of Apple Mail and into Thunderbird.

I've read the various articles on moving out of Apple Mail into Thunderbird So I believe I can add the Apple email accounts to my Archive profile successfully. I have the import tools so I can import the .mbox files from Apple mail into those accounts.

Where I'm stuck is I can't seem to find an article that gives me detailed instructions on how to combine profiles within Thunderbird. All the articles imply keeping multiple profiles active and I would prefer not to do that.

I am sure I am just not searching properly but I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I do not want to delete any profiles or start adding more accounts until the profiles are cleaned up.

Thanks for reading this long explanation and I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I use Thunderbird to access my Hotmail account. I normally work on my Desktop Windows 11 system but have a laptop Windows 11 which I seldom access email with. When I just tried to update the laptop Thunderbird mail I eventually get the Thunderbird message "Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox". There is enough free space on my drive and it succeeded writing 10522 messages before it came to a halt. I notice that the desktop is at 140.4.0 and the laptop is at 144.0.1 and help says they are both up to date.

Since the Desktop mail is up to date it would seem the quick solution is to replace the mail folder on the laptop with a copy of the mail folder from the desktop. Will this be a problem since they seem to be at different versions. Version 140.4.0 on the Desktop and 144.0.1 on the laptop.

Hello,

let me tell you that I have a few hundred email filters defined, and they (almost all) work fine.

There are three filters that cause problems, and it looks like the problem sticks to the sender.

Let me expand: FAZ, REWE, and Campact cause problems. Two out of three emails from these senders can't be moved to the target folders. I get a pop-up messeage telling me that I have to repair the folder. I do so, and a few days later the same problem comes up. Just for these three senders.

I searched all folders for filters for these three and removed all filters I could find.

Then I created a new folder as a child to the inbox folder, and a new folder inside of this folder to hold emails from FAZ. I defined a new filter rule, as the old ones were removed. Worked for a few emails, and, voila, the message pop-up came again, telling me there are problems moving the email over to the (new) target folder.

Let me repeat: all other filters work fine, just emails from these three senders cause problems.

Any idea where I could have a look, a switch to check?

One last information/idea: all three have different email addresses they send from, I will check the ones that do not work, maybe there is a clue.

I am using POP3/SMTP, not IMAP.

Hoping for a tipp, a clue, an idea -

Georg
