I have set the retention policy on my Thunderbird account for 30 days both in the setting for the inbox and the All Mail inbox and I have used the same setting for my account however it only works on the inbox and I have 1745 message in the All Mail folder which intermittently deletes the older messages and then restores them.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi all: The following question is from Zendesk. I am adding it here so we can have the benefit of a public discussion with our awesome Thunderbird Support Community.

tl;dr Try [[Troubleshoot Mode Thunderbird|Thunderbird Troubleshoot mode|] and see if that helps. Also try disabling all 3rd party software (e.g.anti-virus, firewalls, etc). If it is a password issue, please ask your email provider e.g. Optus or gmail to reset the password for you. Double check your Optus settings at: https://www.optus.com.au/support/answer?id=1434 and double check your gmail settings: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

We've found over the years that troubleshooting is often difficult. It would probably speed things up if you could find somebody who's more technical in your community to help you in real life.

If the tl;dr doesn't help, please give us more troubleshooting details (without this level of detail we can't help you further):

  1. Please let us know your email provider, is it gmail, optus or both?
  2. Please let us know what operating system e.g. macOS Ventura, Windows 11, Ubuntu 22.04
  3. Please let us know what 3rd party software like add-ons, anti-virus or firewalls you are using (and please try disabling them and see if that helps)
  4. Finally, please let us know what steps you followed exactly, what you expected and what actually happened.

Text from Zendesk:

  • "email address" cannot connect to Google when you said I would be able to canot recall my PASSWORD cannot send or receive mail from THUNDERBIRD all settings are CORRECT"
  • "am still unable to open or send my Mozilla mail my IP is Optus my address email at optus address. Optus cannot understand WHY I cannot open Mozilla Mail the setting are correct , this has been going on for months ! What is the point of me having Mozlla mail that will not open or send? I know my password for Optus, but Mozilla keep putting the message up INCORRECT Optus fail to understand , they suggest you email me and give me the original password I gave when I commenced with Mozilla mail, because it was SO LONG AGO I cannot recall the password I joined Mozilla with."
  • "I still cannot open or send from my Mozilla Mail and my server Optus have had a Technician check and it is not Optus the problem is MOZILLA I urgently need to keep in touch with family. Please forward as a matter of URGENCY a form to complete so that I can change my PASSWORD I cannot recall the PASSWORD I gave Mozilla when I opened my account years ago. Thank You,"

I am using Mac OS Ventura 13.6.9. I have been a Thunderbird user for many years. Since this last update, I have started having issues where not all emails are displaying. Seems like most recent emails open correctly, but when I get to emails that are a day or 2 old, I get the the following banner across the top of the screen when the email opens, but can't open the remainder of the email.

=_Part_7925053_1257452459.1527904489697--

I have attached a screenshot to show what I am seeing.

I am using gmail and I can access the emails in gmail, but not in Thunderbird. What is the fix for this?

Thanks

Laura

setting up a new computer, trying to set up my gmail account on Thunderbird I get this message... Secure connection failed

' live.mozillamessaging.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate has expired.

(Error code: sec_error_expired_issuer_certificate)

   * This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be
someone trying to impersonate the server.
   * If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may
be temporary, and you can try again later.

Or you can add an exception…

I have 2 machines side by side, the old works just fine , its 12 yrs old, i want to use my new one... how do I fix this ?? And yes ive tried manual settings and all that.. its the certificate in Thunderbird thats expired it says

I needed to change my gmail password. I went to Saved Passwords and changed the password on the account--I id'd the account by old password. However, I'm still getting the error message: The STAT command did not succeed. Error getting message number and sizes. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: [AUTH] Invalid credentials.

The account was not an oauth account which has a password I don't recognize. Also, the associate smtp record has a different password.

How do I change the password? Do I need to change the smtp password also?

thanks carol

A long time ago my Gmail account was set up to route through my Plusnet email account so that all emails arrived together on Thunderbird. I have now set up for the Gmail emails to arrive directly in Thunderbird which means that any Gmail email is received twice. How do I disconnect the Gmails being routed through the Plusmail account without stopping the Plusnet emails arriving directly from them.

I have posted up to yesterday requests for help with Thunderbird to both mail.gmail.com and to Thunderbird. Part was solved by gmail but they said that for slowness to contact Thunderbird. I got a notice things were solved and this morning both the pop.gmail.com (downloading posts with Thunderbird) and the smtp.gmail.com (sending posts with Thunderbird) were fast as usual - few seconds. I sent about 35 posts and only the first took two second. This evening the sending posts from my Thunder bird (of the desktop computers - 10 posts during an hour) take about two minutes. Sending from the smartphone take a second.

I got a new laptop and wanted to set up Mozilla Thunderbird for an existing Gmail account. I tried several times, all failed, with a warning "unable to connect with server imap.gmail.com, may be userid and password are wrong". But I can logon to my Gmail account (with the same userid and password) on Firefox website and on my previous computer, so the id and password are correct). And I was able to set up another Gmail account on Thunderbird in this new laptop (so the version of Mozilla is not the culprit) with the same server settings (port for incoming and outgoing mails, authentication methods SL/TLS, O Auth2 etc). Will someone please help me?

Thunderbird's behavior is illogical when moving a message from one Gmail account to another. It copies the message from Account 1 to Account 2, and then it archives the message in Account 1 instead of deleting it.

The correct action is delete, not archive. "Moving" means move from one place to another, not create a copy so that two versions begin to exist in two different places. If the user wanted to copy, he would choose copy instead of move.

Unsuspecting users use the move command without knowing that Thunderbird is actually archiving their old messages instead of deleting them. In other cases, people like me, who know that Thunderbird doesn't "move" correctly, sometimes can still select "move" instead of "copy" by mistake. The result is that you have to fish for those archived messages in Account 1's "All Mail" folder now, and if you've moved many emails that were buried deep inside the inbox, you are screwed!

This is a UX disaster. Why has this travesty gone on for so many years and why hasn't it been addressed after almost 2 decades?

Set up your existing email address will not work. Thunderbird stopped working no outgoing no incoming. Deleted account then downloaded new Thunderbird. Entering correct name, correct email address and password (also tried with no password) finds set up on Mozilla ISP sever. Select 'Done' brings up message "Cannot log in to server.Probably wrong configuration, username or password".

This unsolvable for me now as I have tried everything I know and suggested in Help.
