After update 138.0.1 my profile is not "opening" emails.

I can see that im getting emails, i can see that i can send and make new emails, but the emails when i either click or double click them are "white".

I even tried reading the "source code" it shows nothing. I even tried going to the beta channel, but no avail, the issue persists.

Is there a cleanup, any file to delete? something?

The Subject Line is the first thing the recipient sees. So it's important that it be consistent with the message's text.

  • I may want to insert an emoji

For example, the Subject Line may be humorous. "You take yourself too seriously". Insert a LOL emoji

  • I may want to use a different font

The style of a font can suggest the theme or basic sentiment of the text.

Headers are inconsequential, compared to the actual message content, I'm sure everybody will agree!

But on Thunderbird, recently, the headers take up almost HALF of the available space on the screen!

I have tried everything to reduce the message headers to ONE LINE (that is all it needs) but nothing works!!!

Have a look at FoxMail (screenshot below)! Compare it with how my Thunderbird looks (screenshot below)!

These are actual screenshots of what my entire screen looks like, with Thunderbird and FoxMail.

Foxmail has clean, simple, one line headers, with the message body taking up the maximum viewable space on the page! Thunderbird is almost 50% WASTED screen space!!!!

BTW the add-on / extension "Compact Headers" does not seem to work with the latest versions of Thunderbird.

Thank You!

This questions is oft asked and answered, nonetheless, the answers include features I don't seem to have. Perhaps I am just not looking in the correct place.

I am told than once I am viewing the Address book, I can find "Export ..." and "Import ..." in the Tools menu (and that this is different from what one sees in when not viewing the Address book.

Not true for me. First, the Address book appears as a tab, just like and beside any open emails. Second there is no "Import ..." in Tools menu and the Export in that menu is the usual export of the entire profile, which includes the Address book in some form I am sure but not the form I need. See attached screenshot.

Seems I was able to do this in the past and the replies to others questions indicate it's still possible but try as I might, I can't find this feature.

If I am just being stupid, please be gentle in your response ...

I've been using Thunderbird for years. It connects to my gmail account using POP. I'm on a Windows computer using Windows 11 and Thunderbird says it's up to date with version 128.10.1esr.

For the past couple of weeks my Sent folder has been empty. Emails are sent successfully, they're just not stored.

I have searched for solutions but they all seem to deal with IMAP, not POP. I have found the folder (appdata\profiles etc) where the sent file exists, and it's there and very big. I tried copying it to a new name ("sent2") and asking Tbird to store sent messages there but it's still empty and not saving messages. I also tried deleting the sent.msf file and that didn't help either.

Any thoughts?

I used to have an icon to change how the message list was displayed, and in particular it allowed me to sort emails into either threaded or unthreaded. It was next to the icon used to select columns to display, in the top right corner of the pane. It's disappeared and I can't find out how to get it back - can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have View > Sort By > Threaded turned on, but email threads do not show my replies as separate emails in the chain (like Gmail or Outlook).

I am not willing to copy/move all my sent messages to the folders in which I receive emails. I have 7 different email addresses I monitor and this would be... unwieldy, at best, and does not match my desired workflow.

When I click on an email with replies, the Conversation command in my toolbar goes grey, and even if it didn't, I don't want to open a new tab for the conversation. I want the email, and all replies (from me and the sender) to show in the middle/header pane.

What I'd really like is to make Thunderbird look as much like Outlook as I can, but that doesn't seem to be possible without more effort than I'm willing to expend - but a thread that was actually threaded would be a good start.

Any suggestions?

I am long time user of Thunderbird and currently using version 128.10. I am having trouble downloading and sending email either from Gmail or from my MS Exchange account as of late (May 2025). Email sometimes selectively downloads but I am no longer able to send email either through my Gmail of MS Exchange accounts as both the Gmail and exchange SMTP servers time out. This problem started with the previous versions of Thunderbird circa Nov/Dec 2024. A Thunderbird or Windows update resolves the problem for a short time but then the problem it reoccurs. Server settings are all correct and have been checked multiple times. I've deactivated Norton AV and firewalls, added and/or verified port exceptions but to no effect. This problems has resulted in many overlooked important emails until they've been double checked on webmail portal. Is trouble sending and receiving emails a broader issue with Thunderbird users and are Google and Microsoft deliberately making it difficult to use Thunderbird as an email client? I've seen older posts dating to 2023 reporting similar problems and I'm surprised that without changing anything on my end that this problem suddenly popped up. Any suggestions on how to resolve?

My Inbox showed no messages the last time I started Thunderbird (until Thunderbird started to download new messages). I looked on the C: drive under Profiles, and the Inbox showed 0 KB, when a backup from 10/17/2021, was 1.67 GB (1,753,217 KB). I am not sure how this happened. I think there were Thunderbird updates for a couple of days before I noticed the problem. I had been having trouble with Windows 10 updates, and saved files on an external hard drive on 4/20/25 to back them up, but by then, the Inbox file in my Thunderbird profile showed 0 KB. I am using POP to download emails. Is there any way I can get my emails back? Are they saved somewhere else? Thank you in advance for your help!

I am having a problem with my thunderbird email client. There was an update to the program over night and now when I load thunderbird it is unable to show me the content of emails in any of the folders. I can see the emails in the list and all the folders are shown in the folder tree on the left. Howevr I am not able to access the content of the emails. My thunderbird profile folder is on a network share, this fileserver is a windows based machine. If I copy the profile to my local machine the profile works correctly and I am able to open emails and view the contents. It is only when my profile is on the network that I cannot view the contents of the emails. I ran thunderbird in safe mode and this does not resolve the situation. I have tried to repair the folders but this did not work. I deleted the .msf files but this also did not work. I ran the thunderbird debugger and then tried to access an email, the debugger stopped on the follwing exception: NS_ERROR_XPC_BAD_CONVERT_JS: Could not convert JavaScript argument arg 0 [nsITreeView.setTree]. What could be the problem with my emails?

Emails from a number of emails are going into my junk folder that should not go into it. Even when I mark each email as "Not Junk", it continues to grab emails that it shouldn't. This has been going on for a long time and list of Non-Junk emails going into the Junk folder is increasing. I cannot find how to fix this any where on your website.

I am not a techy of any sort, so don't want to change any thing I shouldn't.

Maybe the easiest thing to do us just shut down the junk grabber. I'd rather do the choosing my self.

Thanks

Dear All

Unfortunately Thunderbird crashed and deleted ALL my emails in my inbox, decades worth, and nothing in deleted folder. Same when checking on webmail. Sent, drafts, etc still have the emails present.

Oddly only some accounts were affected.

Please let me know if there is any way to recover the emails. This happened less than 35mins back.

Greatly appreciate any help.

FYI I tried the below but since missing on webmail as well I dont think this helps as when I check the file size is very small:

hunderbird stores your emails locally in a profile folder. Here's how to find it:

Open Thunderbird.

Go to: Menu (☰) > Help > More Troubleshooting Information

Scroll to "Profile Folder", and click "Open Folder" (on Windows) or "Show in Finder" (on Mac).

Once inside:

Navigate to: Mail > [Your Mail Server Name] > Inbox or for IMAP: ImapMail > [Your Mail Server Name] > Inbox

Look for files:

Inbox (no extension) – this is your actual email data.

I've setup a filter rule to auto-reply to emails while I am on holidays and this works well. However, there are some businesses who will continue to have me on a cc list or in a team distribution list.

The idea is to only send an out of office reply once. I think Outlook does that from memory.

Is there a way to do it in Thunderbird or is this currently not do-able within the Thunderbird base product or via extension/addon?

Running Version 138.0.1 64bit.
