I would like to be able to copy all of my current TBird (profile, settings, add-ons, folders, content etc) to new computer. Is that possible, and if so, can you tell me step by step how to do it? Been using TBird about 15 years but am not a programmer or tech person. I use the POP format, IMAP just doesn't work for me.

Copying from very old HP laptop Windows 10 64-bit to refurb Dell desktop, Win 11 Home, 64Bit. Please let me know if more info is needed.

Thank you for your time, Victoria

I installed the new 115.0.1 version of Thunderbird, recommended in Flathub/Flatpak version. The issue is that when I launch this version of Thunderbird I lose my account information and am invited to configure an existing email address, which means I lose all my profile. Back to version 1020 in Deb version everything is fine, my profile is intact. How should I proceed?

I'm trying with utter lack of success to configure a Thunderbird install to link to a Gmail account via IMAP.

System Basics: Windows 10 Home, 64bit, fully patched. Antivirus by MalwareBytes 4.30 Premium, fully updated. No fancy firewall, just a regular router.

This account had been installed and working fine until a family member "helpfully" changed the Gmail password, but reauthentication fails. I enter the account details, including password, into the Thunderbird Accounts settings for the account; it pings Google and correctly retrieves all the IMAP settings, and when I click "Done" Thunderbird opens a browser window to Google's two-step authentication with the email address prepopulated. However, when I click the blue "Next" button on that authentication page, rather than advancing to a password screen, the browser simply deletes the email address from the text box and stays on the same screen (see attached image for what I'm talking about).

Things I've tried:

  • Uninstall, reboot, reinstall Thunderbird.
  • Turn off MalwareBytes protection.
  • Uninstall, delete every registry key related to Thunderbird, reboot, reinstall Thunderbird.
  • Clear cache on every browser on the system
  • Change Windows default browser settings to either Chrome (see below) or IE/Edge
  • Install new browser (Chrome wasn't yet on this PC), then change Thunderbird's file handler for https to Chrome (this is MUCH harder than it used to be as T-Bird v. 78.anything doesn't have the old "Preferences" menus)

Incidentally, changing browsers doesn't seem to make a difference in that pop-up browser window, so I suspect Thunderbird is using its own internal browser and not the system browser.

I have, and can send, the support info extract from T-bird to a support technician but am unsure of uploading it here. Nevertheless, I welcome suggestions ... this is driving me nuts!

What setting will stop the constant notice "Download the latest version of Firefox." I don't want 20 notices per day. It's like having a child in the backseat "are we there yet?" "are we there yet?" "are we there yet?" How many times do I have to click the "Dismiss" button before this stupid software understands that I do not want updates? I've noticed that this is a common complaint. Stop the bullying by making people choose automatic updates. Many times things get messed up on my computer with updates and it is not worth the aggravation. Candace M.

Verizon offloaded its email accounts to AOL/Yahoo in 2017. Until this week, my Thunderbird worked using the Verizon pop and smtp server/port configurations. In February 2021, AOL contacted its Verizon users with these instructions for re-configuring their email clients:

https://help.aol.com/articles/allow-apps-that-use-less-secure-sign-in#others

At the bottom of that page there is an 'Access mail via Thunderbird' section. The instructions listed there do not work. Right below these instructions is a 'Read more on removing and re-adding accounts in Thunderbird' link that leads to support.mozilla.org. The instructions listed there don't work either.

It seems that AOL wants its email users to use OAuth2 for both incoming and outgoing authentication. The individual email account settings in Thunderbird have OAuth2 listed as an option for pop authentication, but there is no OAuth2 authentication option for the smtp server.

Google searches indicates that other are having this problem, lots of guessing going on, but no solution. Does anyone have a solution for this problem? I've used Thunderbird for many years and would like to continue using it. My version of Thunderbird is 78.7.1 64-bit.

Hello, I had to reinstall my NYU email into my Thunderbird this morning.

I followed the instructions provided by NYU: https://nyu.service-now.com/sp?id=kb_article&sysparm_article=KB0016473&sys_kb_id=7c55482fdbb20f00ae9b51f74b961972&spa=1

But I keep getting an error message. I know the account name and password are correct because I was able to log in on my browser and reinstall it on my phone.

I contacted NYU IT but then said to contact Thunderbird because they said it was a problem on Thunderbird's end...

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you.

I have had this issue before and uninstalling and reinstalling has fixed it in the past. Today when I opened firefox it prompted me to update , which I did without thinking. Subsequently, it stopped working. I have tried: restarting my PC, running in troubleshooting mode( it wouldn't even open when I tried this), uninstalling and reinstalling using the internet installer, uninstalling and reinstalling using the offline installer ( tried on multiple hard drives, so I don't think hardware failure is the issue), installing an older version of fire fox, and installing the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit version. The attached images show what displays upon trying to launch firefox. nothing loads, not typing an address into the search bar, not clicking on a bookmark, the only UI element that will display is the 3 horizontal line setting menu.

I've got old emails cached locally for 2 IMAP accounts. Merely as a backup. Both of these accounts are long gone for years, but I always kept the emails as backup/archive copy.

However, when I try to move/migrate my profile to another computer (as I've successfully done many times over many years without problems), now these IMAP folders/emails vanish. Whenever I try to copy or repair these folders, Thunderbird prompts for a login and won't let me continue without. Login is impossible though since the accounts are long gone. :/

Is there a way to kind of "materialize" the IMAP cache which I can see and browse before I migrate the profile?

Big thanks in advance! PS: Next time I'll archive them while the accounts are still active. I promise! ;)

I've succeeded (with a lot of outside help - thank you Which?) in transferring my TB profile following the replacement of my HDD with an SSD. Now I'm stuck again, trying to transfer my address book from my saved back-up into the newly-installed copy of TB .

I have followed the clear instructions on this site regarding the need to export the address books as an LDIF file. But when I have selected this format in the box at the bottom of the AB page, and pressed 'Save', I cannot then find the saved file to transfer it to a thumb drive to install it into the fresh copy of TB. Where is it, for goodness sake? What am I missing (apart from a digital brain, of course)?

I have looked at the FAQ for this subject and I suspect I am out of luck. I believe Tbird automatically backs up data and stores it in a "profile" file. As I was trying to save documents etc. on my old PC with a view to selling it I encountered a serious problem which caused me to take it in for repair. The shop reported a damaged drive and have saved whatever data they could before returning the old hard drive. I now have a new PC, have installed TBird from the internet but as I was not able to save the original profile, I have lost all of the folders with saved emails. Is there any way to recover that information? Presumably it's still saved somewhere under my profile? I would be grateful for any advice about that.

Thunderbird 78 to 91 Update Question

Greetings,

Thunderbird recently updated from 78 to 91 but, when as I was reading the release notes, it states:

"Thunderbird 91 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 78 or earlier. A future release will provide updates from earlier versions.".

Not to sound paranoid but I didn't do a direct download from the site and just manually checked if there was an update via; Help > About > manual update option and it updated to the latest version as of this writing. I found out only after updating then reading the release notes.

My question is, has that "future release" been released so that Thunderbird auto updates from 78 to 91 and the release notes just hasn't been updated?
