I am running Windows 10, and have recently started experiencing trouble with Firefox. After trying a lot of other solutions from the support forums (including creating a new Firefox profile), I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox from a fresh download. I experience the same trouble: very shortly after starting Firefox, I hear constant disk activity, and Firefox becomes unresponsive. My only choice at that point is to end the program using the red "X" (program close button). As soon as I do this the disk activity ends and the computer runs normally.

I cannot include troubleshooting information with this post because I can't keep Firefox running long enough.

The same performance issues happen with Firefox running in Safe mode. I had to resort to Microsoft Edge to post this question.

Any troubleshooting assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Firefox 41.0 is struggling with any page that has Flash player on it. Sometimes it copes, but other times it hangs. I have noticed that when this happens, plugin-container.exe sticks at 50%. At this point you have to kill the process. There have always been tolerable problems with Firefox and Flash whereby it hangs now and again, or the Flash comes up with an option to kill the script, but with the latest 41.0 it has become too frequent to put up with.

Firefox is crashing on certain websites. This is on a Windows 7 desktop. By "crashing" I mean it freezes up, and when I look at it in Windows Task Manager it says that it's "not responding". I have to click "end task" and then restart Firefox. I've noticed this happening really a lot on chicagotribune.com in the last few days. I have Firefox 41.0. I don't know if this has anything to do with Flash, but I have the latest version of the Flash Player plugin, 19.0.0.185. I also changed the Flash settings to disable hardware acceleration. When I view the same website using Chrome, I'm not having a problem, although I haven't spent a lot of time doing that. Also, many other websites seem perfectly fine -- Wikipedia, for example. But I'm pretty sure I've had the "not responding" problem on some other websites, I just can't remember which ones. Thanks in advance for any help. I'm a long time Firefox user but this is my first time posting on the support forum.

2 different computers are now crashing every few minutes after the latest update on FF. I tried some of your suggestions and then decided before I do anything drastic I would look on your FB page. You should read it. Hundreds of people are having the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS, so it is NOT on our end. I am now using Chrome until this is resolved. I have loved FF but this is unacceptable. People are angry. You have made no attempts to acknowledge this problem or say a patch or update is in the works. What is happening, no bull**it. I have to open task manager just to close FF every single time.

I was having crashing issues with the update before the newest one, but since the new update I have MORE crashes. In fact it crashed while I wrote the first sentence and had to use the task manager to shutdown FF so I could restart. It seems the plugin container is to blame. I've updated flash and turned off the protected mode, but it doesn't help. I get these messages from windows:

A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

The (dinosaur) ISP Juno from California just unveiled a new startup page, StartJuno.com.

It doesn't look too different from the previous version of startup page.

It appears to load as usual, but for the time being pops up a box asking to take the viewer on a tour of the page's features.

Whether or not one goes through the tour, which is pretty mundane, afterward the cursor goes to 'wait'.

FF doesn't go into build-up-HUGE-amounts-of-memory mode, but just stops responding.

This appears to be FF-exclusive. No such problems IE or Chrome.

After updating both, Firefox hangs (not responding) every time running Flash. I tried refresh.-didn't help. Then uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox, still hangs. Settings in Flash already match suggested settings in troubleshooting articles. Was working perfectly until I updated Firefox this morning. Is there a way to roll back to previous version? Read other threads which suggest driver issues and/or Windows version of Flash, etc. But EVERYTHING was working until the Firefox update. What can I do?

While playing FarmVille 2 foxfire keeps hanging - says at top "not responding". I can load game and play for a few minutes but then hangs. Sometimes it hangs right after loading. Will not come back so I have to quit foxfire. I have been having the problem in last several weeks but yesterday it got really bad. I usually only had to restart foxfire once to get it to work. I have tried refreshing foxfire. Also disabling hardware acceleration. My plugins are up to date. My computer is only 1.5 years old and I have windows 10. I can play FV2 on Google Chrome and MSN edge but both are slow and jerky. I really prefer foxfire over the other ones.

Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1. Firefox began freezing "Firefox is not responding" while watching videos using flash, immediately after FF Release 40 installed. I tried all the "fixes", FF safe mode, Flash in unprotected mode, refresh FF (and rebuild tool bar, and get back classic theme), hardware acceleration, etc. I did not have any problems using IE with Flash (Active X) on the same videos. FF support told me the problem was having two Flash Players, and to uninstall both, using Adobe's uninstall tool. Since videos on my laptop are my only form of entertainment, I was reluctant to uninstall Flash for IE, when it was working Fine. My solution was to stop using FF for videos, and use IE. With FF release 41, FF began freezing on all websites using any flash content. I really like FF, and it is my preferred browser, but it became totally unusable.

As a last gasp try to fix the constant "Firefox is not responding" problem, I set FF to not update automatically (check for updates, but let me choose whether to install), and I installed FF 38.0.5. I know that someone will comment that doing this is not advised, and that it will leave me vulnerable to attack. I have since watched about 30 hours of video without a single "Firefox is not responding", or a flash crash. I use Norton as anti virus, so I'm not sure how protected I am, but I am happy to be able to use FF again. The "About Firefox" page in help shows me on 38.0.5, and has a button to allow update to the current release, so I am confident going back to the current release would be easy.

I have to wonder what in FF 40 and 41 was causing the problem? I think that problems actually started with FF 39 with Flash crashing constantly, and changed to FF freezing with release 40. Here is a link to my earlier post about the freezing https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1079195#answer-770460

I may have unique variables, Windows 7, FF and Flash, Comcast Internet, Xfinity online, but with the freezing occurring on any website using flash content, and the problems going away after down grading to FF 38, I have to think the problem is within FF ?

Thanks, and it is so nice to be able to use FF again!

Deleted a few TEMP files this morning and AOL and Firefox stopped working. Got AOL going again and removed all traces of the original Firefox installation and downloaded a fresh version of Firefox. The program opens, but immediately goes into a "not responding" status with "connecting" showing in tab. Cannot click on anything on the Firefox screen. Need to go to Task Manager to kill the program. Have deleted and reinstalled several times. Disconnected the firewall and the anti-virus programs. Still always get the same result. Have tried it in SAFE mode. Same result. Going on 8 hours working on this thing. Need help badly. System is updated version of XP.

I have been in IT for about 30 years now and for many years now I have used firefox. I think it was earlier this year after a new version of firefox came out I have had constant problems on THREE computers. I use a windows 7 computer at work and up until a couple weeks ago I used a windows 8.1 computer at home. I recenly got a different computer and installed windows 10 at home. ALL three have the same problems constantly not responding lots of crashes.

the fact that it happens on three totally different computers with totally different components tells me it is not a hardware problem. the fact that three different OS'es are involved tell me its not the OS

the only clues/indications I get are that its a shockwave or flash problem.

are other people having this problem? the fact that it happens on a new windows 10 computer (fresh install not upgrade) tells me its not outdated flash/shockwave.

is there some serious flaw in Firefox or Adobe software ?

Firefox has been hanging (not responding) very frequently, at least every few minute. It's been happening on youtube or switching from tabs. I've tried just about everything, from re-naming the "places.sqlite" to "places.sqlite.old" and doing re-installs (both deleting folder and uninstalling completely). There's no error that pops up, its just hanging, and then it comes back to normal after about 5 seconds. And the cycle repeats. Any new help would be great. Thanks.

I have used Firefox for a long time, and have it as my default browser. However the continual "Firefox is not responding" is driving me daft.

My OS is Windows 10, and my version of Firefox is 41.0.1

I have tried various solutions, none of which have worked so far, including renaming the places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old, unticking 'use hardware acceleration etc..', and several others. Also I have minimal plugins activated.

The sites I usually visit are mainly news type sites, although naturally there are others such as sports sites, youtube etc.....

I know that others have had this issue, and some seem to have had their particular problem diagnosed, but despite my own best efforts I cannot locate an answer that solves mine.

I appreciate any help that you might be able to give, and am grateful for your interest in helping me solve the problem.

Regards,

Alan

Starting a few days ago I've been having some serious issues with Firefox. It crashes almost constantly when I try to go on the internet. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the browser. Didn't work. When I go to close the page there is no option to send a report, it just asks me if I want to close the page or wait for it to respond. Then when I bring back Firefox it gives me the "Well this is embarrassing" message.
