Thunderbird Cannot Connect to Corporate Gmail After Okta Password Reset

I have been using the Thunderbird email client on my Mac for a long time to access my corporate Gmail account. (This is not a personal Gmail account, it is a corporate Gmail linked with Okta.)

In this corporate Gmail account, I do not have access to "App Password" settings or "Less Secure App Access" options. Everything was working fine until 25th April 25. On that day, I updated my Okta password, which also affected my Gmail account because Gmail is connected through Okta.

Since then, my Thunderbird email client has stopped working. It keeps asking me to allow Thunderbird to access Gmail, and even though I allowed it many times, the same pop-up keeps appearing. To troubleshoot the issue, I have tried the following steps:

  • Reset my Okta password again to rule out any password issues. (I am able to log in to Gmail successfully with the new password and I can configure the same Gmail account with the Mac Mail app without any issue.)
  • Upgraded the Thunderbird client to version 137.0.2.
  • Cleared saved passwords and cleared cookies. (Note: "Accept cookies from sites" is enabled under Web Content settings.)
  • Deleted the account from Thunderbird and tried to re-add it.

After this, I started getting the error: "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username, or password."

  • While adding the account, I entered my name and email address, left the password field blank, unchecked "Remember Password", and filled in the configuration manually.

When I clicked on "Re-test", it detected the server settings correctly. But when I clicked on "Done", I got the same error again.

  • Created a completely new profile in Thunderbird and tried again, but still faced the same issue:

"Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username, or password."

  • Uninstalled Thunderbird completely and reinstalled it, but the issue still remains. (Please refer to the attached screenshot.)
  • I tried the troubleshooting mode, which disables all the add-ons and themes, but the issue is still the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but Gmail has made some changes (see the link https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?visit_id=638814378228955739-1844270273&hl=en&rd=1). This might be causing the issue, though it was working fine until I reset my password on April 25th.

After a power failure, upon reboot, Thunderbird wanted me to create a new account. I have three POP3 email accounts that I access through Thunderbird, and all are missing.

I have been selecting several different Help and Forum search returns to correct this issue, though none (that I can find) pertain directly to my specific problem.

I am running Windows 10 64 bit and recently downloaded T-Bird. (Last 6 months, auto updating) Per the Information section, T-bird is running the 32 bit version. (I don't know why)

I have located and read the article pertaining to T-bird self-creating a new profile. My old profile still exists, and I have set my old profile as the default to no avail.

While attempting to follow the instructions for copying my old profile to a separate drive and bringing it back, I noticed that both the "Imapmail" and "Mail" folders are missing from the root directory of the old profile. Doing a windows file search on the C drive, the only folders that appear on the drive are those of the new default profile created by T-bird after the power failure.

Looking inside the "Mail" folder in the new default profile, I see that it contains everything from my old profile. I copied the folder and placed it in the old profile root directory to no avail, though I have not done a re-boot of the computer itself.

One thing I have not tried is deleting the the new profile after selecting the profile as default. I am afraid to delete anything, as in my mind I may permanently delete something if I did.

How do I get T-bird to return to it's proper function where all my accounts appear upon opening of T-bird?

What is it looking at (points to) to retrieve each profile or the email accounts ?

Now I'm locked out so I can't get far enough to screenshot the verification code screen.

My profile has multiple folders for each of my 6 mail accounts. E.g. for gmail: the ImapMail folder contains imap.gmail.com, imap.gmail-1.com, imap.gmail-2.com, imap.gmail-3.com, & imap.gmail-4.com. These folders are not the same & even have different years on the content file dates. Some contain only a few INBOX files, while others have hundreds of sequential INBOX-* files. Similarly, each of my other accounts have this same situation. Are these from multiple installations over the years? Is there a way to clean this up or to combine them into just 1 file without losing messages? I suspect I'm not really seeing any of the lower numbered ones, but only the most recent.

I wondered whether someone could advise please? I have a new laptop and want to transfer my email accounts from the old laptop to the new one. I have been following the AskLeo YT video on moving accounts to a new computer. I have copied the Profiles folder and profiles.ini (both zipped beforehand) from the old laptop to the new one. I downloaded Thunderbird to the new laptop, then deleted the supplied Profiles folder and profiles.ini and extracted the transferred zips. When I then start Thunderbird on the new laptop I have my standard inbox with Drafts, Sent, Junk, spam, Deleted and Saved, which is all as you'd expect. But I also have another account appearing as INBOX-1 which also has a Sent folder. Any emails transferred from the old computer are present in both Inboxes. Can I removed the second inbox, INBOX-1, without affecting my genuine inbox? Thanks.

Hi, I recently changed the password of my Google account, and now I am facing this issue where I can't add my account in Thunderbird. I removed saved passwords and also cleared all cookies. I tried to add the account in troubleshoot mode, but the result is still the same. I don't know, but Thunderbird says my configuration was found in the Mozilla ISP database. I am guessing that is the root cause of this problem. Please someone help me with this. I have a lot of emails and uninstalling Thunderbird and setting it up again is not an option here.
