While trying to retrieve new messages for one of my email accounts, I keep getting the message "Login to server xxx.xxx.xxx with username xxx@xxx.xxx failed."

I click the "Enter New Password" button and enter the same password that I use to successfully login to the account on a browser, and it STILL fails and keeps showing the same message box.

This started happening this morning. Have others reported this problem? What do I need to check to see if there is a problem in either Thunderbird or in my email account settings?

I am unable to get Thunderbird to work after my microsoft password was updated. I get the popup & enter my email & new password, but I never get the second popup to accept permissions. It just doesn’t go any further. I can see Failed login attempts for TB on the microsoft side. I am not too tech savvy, so I’m doing my best to troubleshoot!

This is Thunderbird 78.14.0 on mac 10.11, YES, that is old, it is a legacy mac! It was successfully setup with OAuth2 over 3 years ago & worked fine until the password update. I was able to add TB to an old 10.15 mac & it got the permissions popup & the account was added fine (but it is also using TB 150.0.2). Oddly, there was no 2FA prompts given, it just connected with my password only??

I had a number of devices that needed passwords updated, so I’m wondering if there was a conflict when trying to do this one? Do I need to delete certain files? I found where to delete the stored passwords & did that, but it’s not moving past that point to even store new ones & connect. I can’t grant permissions?

Also, I notice the successful TB login activity shows my IP address, whereas the unsuccessful one shows Browser Mozilla Firefox. I’m not sure if that helps with troubleshooting or not!

I've used Thunderbird for years & have never changed my password. All of a sudden, it will no longer recognize my password. As a consequence, I am no longer receiving email and cannot sign in, even though it just "updated" my version of thunderbird..

Hello, I'm new to Thunderbird, trying to connect my accounts for the first time. I've tried linking my new Posteo email, and I'm getting the same error message that it looks like many people are getting for various accounts (especially gmail) -- "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." It's the correct username (email address) and password, and I'm selecting IMAP, which is the recommended configuration in Posteo's own instructions for linking with Thunderbird. I can't find any trouble shooting info that's not for gmail. (I haven't tried to link my gmail yet).

I would appreciate any help with this matter. I was excited to use Thunderbird, and now I'm wondering if I need to find a different option.

Thank you David for your reply yesterday; I don't think it will work on a Mac. Problems seldom come singly and I now find that i cant get into my wife's Thunderbird account on the new Mac Mini. But on the laptop I have no problems. Both accounts have the same addresses yet the email address on the new computer will not accept the password. Any thoughts anyone?

Bonjour à tous et toutes, Je ne dois pas être le seul à demander ou redemander, cette question auquelle je ne trouve pas une seule solution éventuellement proposée, qui règle le souci Explication J'ai donc thunderbird avec 5 comptes de mails d'opérateurs différents dont, l'emmerdeur FREE En effet, en plus du logiciel, j'ai un vpn sur mon pc et mon mobile pour le travail et autres Si par malheur j'interroge mon mail free avec mon vpn actif soit sur pc ou sur le mobile, tout se passe correctement mais trés rapidement dans la nuit cet emmerdeur de free bloque mon mail, annule le mot de passe car il a détecté le MAL !!! et bloque toutAlors les ennuis commencent avec thunderbird Je m'arrache les cheveux, car à peine déclencher evidemment il interroge free et là !! bim !!! refusé ! et c'est le caca !! la fenêtre de connexion pour free, n'arrête pas de revenir bloquant tout, tout !! tant qu'il n'aura pas un bon m d passe ! et je ne veux pas supprimer le compte mail pour débloquer, car cela fou la merde avec tous mes dossiers de mails free enregistrés dans thunderbird , et c'est pénible de tout remettre et relancer et reconfigurer comme on le souhaite Je voudrais savoir pour les ingénieurs et leurs grandes antennes de thunderbird, ne font rien pour ce souci a priori réccurent et connu On m'a dit de décocher des cases pour essayer de "sauter" free mais aucune solution ne fonctionne C'est une vraie plaie à l'appréciation de ce logiciel. Ich hatte immer Thunderbird, habe das Programm neu installiert und jetzt muss ich ein Paßwort eingeben. Bisher mußte ich das nie tun. Also habe ich keins das ich eingeben kann. Das ich keins eingeben kann, ist ein Herstellen des E-Programms nicht möglich. Was kann ich tun. Ich benötige das unbedingt wegen der eingehenden Mail. Viele Dank für Ihre Hilfe

When I try retrieving my email from my AOL account (IMAP) using Thunderbird and Windows 11 I get the message "Authentication failure while connecting to server imap.aol.com." This account was working fine for months until the T-bird update. I have several other accounts on T-Bird, including Gmail and others, and they're still working just fine.

I have double-checked all the account settings and tried deleting the AOL account from T-Bird and setting it up again from scratch, but the problem persists.

I am trying to set up Thunderbird on a new PC (my old PC died following a power outage). Trying to set up a New Account, I enter the email address I normally use. It asks me for a password. I have tried passwords I have just set up for Mozilla, Thunderbird, Virgin (three of them) and even Google. I am sick of seeing ‘Authentication error’ with not help offered. I never set up a password when I started using Thunderbird many years ago. I keep all my password. There is no option when a password is forgotten or for a new one to be set up. If you can’t or won’t assist, can you recommend a different email app. I have spend so long on this! Cheers, Ken Bailey

I dont understand this new method of sign in message you have sent, im an oldie, not an IT geek, I dont understand & very worried im going to loose access to my e-mail which has inf ormation on that i NEED

I need to know how to enter a new password. My original Thunderbird account was eliminated. My Mac was hacked and in the process of cleaning my laptop, Thunderbird was erased. Also, I have more than one email address. They were all listed and available on my original Thunderbird account. Thank you for your help. The summary says it all, really. I've tried all sorts of Google searches and fixes, but nothing works; I was originally on Netscape Navigator, and after Microsoft killed that off, I went to Firefox and Thunderbird - so 'lost in the mists of time ' sums up my problem.

Seit Ende Januar 2026 kann ich keine e-Mails mehr empfangen. Klicke ich auf den Button "Nachrichten empfangen", erscheint folgende Meldung: Anmeldung auf dem Server secureimap.t-online.de mit Benutzernamen "[edited]@t-online.de" fehlgeschlagen. Über mein Handy kann ich die eingegangen E-Mail ansehen. Warum auf meinem Laptop nicht?

Bisher habe ich noch nie ein Passwort eingegeben. Was muss ich machen?
