A few weeks ago I started noticing a pop up window was occurring every (approx) 5 minutes in Thunderbird suggesting that I run a compact to save 992MB. I assumed this would stop happening after a few weeks and a few updates from Mozilla, but the problem has remained, so I'm coming here to ask about it.

Context: I'm on Windows 11. I have multiple email accounts that my Thunderbird reaches out to. At least one of the accounts is retired so reaching out to its historical server fails.

Reproducing: For me to reproduce it, I run the compact. Quit Thunderbird. Start Thunderbird. It reports 992MB can be freed. I let it compact. The main inbox disappears and reappears. I wait a few seconds and restart Thunderbird. It again tells me that it can save 992MB by running a compact.

What I've tried: I've tried repair on the inbox folder of the account I'm typically in. That didn't help. I have many other folders across many accounts and not tried to repair any other folders. I've searched the Mozilla help system.

Logs: It seems to me that a compact is probably failing but I don't know where to look for evidence of the failure.

Thunderbird stopped syncing with my GMX email accounts (I have several) a couple of days ago. It keeps reporting that the attempted connection has timed out. I haven't changed any settings on either Thunderbird nor GMX. Any idea why and how to fix it?

I’ve changed the folder where archived emails are saved. Both the new folder and the old folder now have box-shaped icons. I’d like to revert the old folder to the standard folder icon. How can I do that?

Note: I’m syncing via IMAP from Gmail.

(Windows 11. Desktop computer. Thunderbird 149.0.1)

Last week, I could no longer log in. "Login to server pop.centurylink.net with username xxxx failed."

It had been working perfectly fine prior to a hard drive failure. A couple of weeks ago, a new SSD drive was installed. It was checked by technicians as said to be working fine. Per their directions, I did a sfc /scannow test which revealed no problems with the new drive. Thunderbird worked fine for a couple of weeks with the new drive before the login problems presented.

Last week, Centurylink Email chat went offline during normal business hours. The message pop-up said it was NOT normal business hours when it was. I called someone in the Internet Department who checked into it for me, although his department no longer supports email issues. He said there were system issues in the email and chat division which was why the chat was down. This corresponded exactly to the malfunctioning of Thunderbird. The following Monday morning, the email chat was back up and running as was Thunderbird. Once again I could login. It was fine for a few days before it stopped again.

I input the outgoing and incoming server settings as directed by Centurylink. Incoming Mail: Server: pop.centurylink.net; Port: 995; Encryption: SSL/TLS. Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.centurylink.net; Port 587; Encryption: TLS (or 465 with SSL). I had to do a manual configuration because Thunderbird automatically inserted the STARTTLS encryption with the 587 port code.

I reinstalled Thunderbird with no change. I changed my password at the ISP and then reinstalled Thunderbird with the new password. No change.

I turned my non-Microsoft virus software off and the problem persisted. I checked Windows Defender firewall and it allows emails/email programs to go through.

I contacted the Centurylink Email chat who denied there had every been any "system issues". They said that since I could log into their webmail, that the problem was not on their end but was with my email client. However, sometimes when I log into the Centurylink webmail, literally within seconds it flashes a message box saying my session has expired and I have to log in all over again. That doesn't seem right.

I don't know what else to try. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

When composing an email and adding an attachment, the file type icon does not appear next to the file name of the attachment. I located this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1547712 which seemed to address this and someone hit on the issue--file names that have a space in the name--test file.pdf for example generate the problem. When attaching a file with no spaces in the name, the icon appears. Any further info on this? Windows 11 personal. Thunderbird v. 149.0.2 (64-bit)

New emails to some accounts appear as duplicates in the unified folder. I suspected it may be connected to the fact I use "All Mail" as the archive folder for a Gmail account, but now the problem is happening with a Proton account as well. When I restart Thunderbird, or deactivate and reactivate the Unified folders view, they no longer appear as duplicates.

I am using Thunderbird 149.0.2 on Windows 11. The issue started a few weeks ago. Any help would be much appreciated!

Yesterday, downloading emails got stuck because it couldn't download an email. I tried this multiple times and then it said it couldn't connect to my email server. I tried Repairing the individuals folders but the problem persisted. I looked the problem up, and one of the recommendations was to uninstall Thunderbird, the profile folder, and install it again. When I launched it again, it told me it couldn't find a profile, so I went to the app data folder and restored the folder containing my emails etc. I reconnected it to my Yahoo Mail server. I started TB this morning, and it does the same thing. It tries to download 205 emails, when I know I haven't got that many from yesterday. It still gets stuck on email 21, so I close it, open it, close it, open it, in which it checks again, and I go round and round in circles. It is now telling me that it has failed to connect to the Yahoo server. Checking mail through the Yahoo site works fine. I am using TB 149.0.1 on Wiindows 11.

I recently upgraded to TB 128.14 Oesr (64, Win 10). I’m a bit conservative about upgrading anything – as upgrades often waste a lot of time – if not risk justified.

Basically, If it’s workin’ well enough (cost vs benefit) …… well … “don’t fix it” – even though … “if it ain’t broke, doesn’t mean it isn’t sub-optimal”. Here, it seemed worth the risk.

My prior TB version – nope, I don’t remember which it was (is that in a log?) incorrectly identified bookoo normal e-messages as “junk” (junk filter deactivated) wasting a LOT of my time to move them back to the “indox”.

It also – CORRECTLY ID’ed – a big lot of data sucking spam as “junk” (junk filter still deactivated) for my PUBLIC e-address (expected spam magnet) – alerting me of the quantity of (expected) spam I was actually getting (my free Omaha steaks are on the way).

After upgrading (to TB 128.14) I don’t get any, well much of that spam any more (got a couple today) – hurrah (maybe)!! I don’t see it any more. It is gone completely (mostly, ostensibly) and the problem is – I do want to SEE it – all of it – in a “spam folder / directory” nd not in trash– wherever it is – to make sure it is NOT mis-ID’ed as spam – when actually an important message maybe telling me I’ve won the FIFA email prize!

So … “the game is a’foot! Holmes! How can I track down that missing spam – to see ALL of it – to verify it’s identity?

I suspect my hosting company – Hostinger – may be involved – as I did verify, previously, with my previous TB version – that they COULD see into my TB account structure. Can’t find it now, but previous did see MY TB account named “Aviation”. They, Hostinger, said THEY aren’t “moving” anything anywhere – not into “Junk”, anyway. Are they lying (as popular as that has become recently)?

I’m not smart enough to understand DKIM (though I could get that way) just want to see ALL email sent to ALL my e-addresses that didn’t get there – wherever it is (not immediately, I would hope)!

For the last 2 versions of Thunderbird, I have seen that even after reading the new messages, the green new messages indicator remains on the TB icon in the taskbar.

It should of course disappear as soon as the new messages are all opened. Otherwise one thinks that there is an unread message somewhere among the mail folders, even though on checking there is not.

This remains so until TB is closed and re-opened. After re-opening the green circled number is gone.

Of course, this is more a nuisance than a serious problem.

But it would be nice to have it sorted by the next version.

In the Thunderbird newsgroup (which I will not name here), one person said the following:

"TB 149.0 (64 bit) tells me I can update to 149.0.1 but when I go to the "What's New" site, the info on the announcement page is "CHANGED There are no Thunderbird changes requiring release notes in this release" and nothing new is mentioned either. Why the release? What's different? Why the secret?

I too would appreciate knowing why this happened.

Today I have experienced a problem downloading new messages, bulk, trash or anything else in my mail server into thunderbird. it requires my primary password and then my regular password. I just set up my primary password so I understand why it is asking for that, but I don't understand why it is also asking for my regular password before I can get access to the mail server that I am using. the regular password was set up on 6/17/24 and until today it was working fine.

I had an issue with my Thundebrid 148.0 (aarch64) running on Mac OS Squoia. I am using it since 2012 and had no issies. But last week when I was trying to empty the trash in the app, it got deleted everything! I had my saved local folder intact. But all IMAP data was errased. Luckily my hostng company were able to restore the back up, but I lost almost a day of emails. Please look into that issue and let me know.
