I love FF and I appreciate the intentions behind the new update for quick/custom search engines in Firefox 140, but I can't help but notice that the new UI for custom search engines requires the user to manually click on various buttons and does not allow one to navigate the process via keyboard only. (Unless I'm missing something?) Prior to this UI update, I was able to fully navigate the drop-down and select my custom search engine of choice using only my arrow keys and enter key. Now, the "search with XYZ" button that pops up if you type the site name is only selectable if you click on it, and cannot be highlighted with the arrow keys.

I am not personally disabled in a way that prevents me from using my trackpad, but having to stop what I'm typing and go out of my way to click on various UI elements is a real stymie in terms of flow, ease of use, and efficiency. At least for me.

Is there some kind of secret key combo I can use? Or an about:config setting to enable keyboard navigation in custom searches? Is it a bug? Or simply the removal of a feature?

I hope I will be able to use my arrow keys to select my search engine again in the future— Thanks

Note: This is also an accessibility issue as those of us with limited or impaired motor control can be inordinately affected in a way that limits our use of Firefox or makes it virtually impossible to use in any use-case more complex than browsing YouTube.

Issue: There are certain, pre-defined, keyboard shortcuts within Firefox whose action is both immediate and irrevocable. Those of us who have limited, or impaired, motor control are particularly susceptible to this, though I have heard anecdotal evidence that other - unimpaired - users suffer from this as well.

Example: There is a particular key combination that I periodically, (accidentally), hit while typing that immediately and irrevocably clears the dialog that I am entering text into - as I am doing here - with no possibility of recovery and no warning that a potentially disastrous action is about to take place.

My specific case, (that is, the most recent instance of my specific case), occurred last night while composing a reply to a topic within the Microsoft Flight Simulator forum addressing a particular, and popular, issue with the sim.

I spent a significant amount of time creating this message - setting paragraph formatting, creating tables, inserting images, carefully crafting the text and such like, that had taken me upwards of an hour to prepare.

While typing - I managed to inadvertently hit a magical "Nuke-and-Destroy" key combination that caused all my lengthy, careful, painstakingly crafted work to immediately vanish with no chance of recovery.

To this very day I still have no idea what combination of keys does this - and if I knew, I would try to suppress it at the keyboard/system level so that Firefox never sees it.

When I searched for a solution to this problem, I found the following article on this site: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../1364260]

In essence, (though it was worded much more politely), the answer was that Mozilla knows about the issue of potentially undesirable "magic" key combinations, has no plans to address it, and if you don't like it it just vacuums being you.

Though this particular key combination might be useful in certain cases, (though I cannot imagine what use-case would benefit from accidentally destroying hours of work), the utterly irrevocable nature of the action - and the absolute lack of any warning whatsoever - makes this a classic case in the annals of horrid user interface design; to the point of being a functional bug even though it works as designed.

A more desirable action would be to:

  1. Allow it to be disabled entirely, along with the other potentially annoying/disastrous keyboard shortcuts.
  2. Provide a (default) action that warns the user that this action is both immediate and irrevocable and allowing the (default) option to abort the action. Extra credit: Allow the user to permanently disable the offending feature from the dialog.
  3. In the unlikely event that a particular user might wish to use this regularly and deliberately, allow the user to bypass the warnings and permanently enable the feature - with the caveat that it vacuums being them if they do something wrong - not unlike the disclaimer when accessing about:config.

I would suggest that this action, and the action of other "magic" keys/key-combinations within Firefox represents a significant burden to those of us who may already be struggling to use a keyboard. Perpetuating this class of issue, especially since it's a known issue and there's no desire whatsoever to accommodate those of us negatively affected by it, borders on both arrogance and ableism.

I would like to humbly place this request at the feet of whomever is responsible for this atrocious policy and earnestly request they reverse this unpleasant and destructive behavior.

Respectfully submitted: Jim Harris.

Added image: [a blank page representing the results of the magic "Nuke-and-Destory" key combination. ]

Hello there I have Thunderbird for Android, version 10.1, and in every folder, all mail, both read and unread, have almost the same appearance. It's not easy to tell which ones in the list are read and which are unread. Is there any setting to turn the unread messages in the folder look highlighted, or more bold, or something different anyway than the rest? Because this way it's very inconvenient, which makes me considering turning back to Outlook. Thanks in advance

Or similarly, pages which have a message box at the bottom, KB overlays that box and everything below it. Quick test shows that only the New Tab screen and URL bar know about the keyboard status.

I've noticed that whenever I press ⌥⇧Space (option-shift-spacebar) in Firefox Developer Edition, it causes the page to refresh.

This behaviour seems to be consistent across devices.

Is there a way to change/disable this behaviour? It is very inconvenient, as it often causes me to accidentally trigger a page refresh when I type an em dash (`—`) in a text input (opt-shift-dash, and then type a space character after it, I'm very likely to hit opt-shift-space by mistake 🙈).

I Tagged This Post Under The *SETTINGS* Topic, But I Believe That It Could Also Fall Under SeverL Other Topics Or Categories As Well Such As The Following: • ACCESSIBILITY • BROWSE or SEARCH • CONNECTIVITY • PRIVACY & SECURITY & I Must Say.... I Am Absolutely Loving The Firefox BETA Web Browser Thus Far & All The Different Settings & Security Features Available, But There Is Either A BUG, Or A Feature That Is Just Missing (for whatever reason) That I Feel Is A MUST HAVE Added Feature & NEEDS To Be Added, Implemented, & Supported Immediately For Users With Disabilities Such As Myself. I Am A U.S. Army Combat Veteran & Lost My Hands In Combat Due To An I.E.D (roadside bomb) & I Rely On Voice Texting To Be Able To Send Messages, Search, Stay Connected With My Community & Friends Online, & The Ability To Even Use A Smartphone Device With Relative Ease. The Gboard Functionality & Ease Of Use Along With The Instant Translations Of Languages , & Audio Translation Features Make My Phone Use Pretty Much As Good As Someone Who Has BOTH Of Their Hands Still. I Love Everything About The Extensions & Added Safety Features With Firefox & The BETA Is My GO TO Web Browser From Now On & That Will Doubtfully Ever Change. But, The Missing VOICE TEXT Will Definitely Change That Decision If It Is Not Implemented Soon, I NEED That Feature & Without It Then The Web Browsers Added Security Is Completely Useless For Me, Because I Won't Be Able To Work The Device On My Own Anymore. Just Like Now.... I'm Now Relying On My Wife To Type & Send My Messages For Me Due To The Missing Voice Text Capability, Which Is Just Not A Preferred Method Or One %hat Ik Willing To Stick With Permanently. She Doesn't Have Time To Take Care Of My Online Social Matters For Me & I Refuse To Ask Her To Do Such. So With That Being Said, Either Mozilla Firefox Needs To Add A Voice Texting Capability To It's Browser Settings Within The Veta Or Else I Will Be Forced To Discontinue It's Use. I Mean, Am I Just Over-Looking Some Sort Of Extension, Add On, Feature, Setting, Or Am I Right & There Isn't (me Available, Because I Prefer To Use The Gboard Due To It's Outstanding Functionality & I Noticed Anytime I Open A Tab Or Access The Firefox Beta Web Browser & Attempt To Either Search For Something, Or If I'm In A Public Chat Setting While Using The Browser, Then The Microphone 🎙️ & Voice Texting Capability & Logo Completely Disappears From My Gboard Keyboard & Is No Longer Accessible For Some Unknown Stupid Reason...??? Can Anyone Please Help Me??? It Would Be Greatly Appreciated.... 💜 Sincerely, Derek B. 💜

Hello developers.

I really enjoyed using Firefox on iOS. It is so much better than other browsers in terms of continuity. However, I do find that there’s one particular thing that Firefox can do better—how to access bookmarks.
“Bookmarks” on the Homepage should be able to be put on top. On the current version, the location of “Bookmarks” is fixed on the bottom of the screen, below “Shortcuts” and “Jump back in”. For many users, including myself, bookmarks are more convenient than Shortcuts. It would be great to move it up top.

And it should be able to show folders. I have a lot of bookmarks, so I have to group them in several folders. What current version does is probably guessing which specific one you want to pick and show it, and the hierarchy is dismissed. So maybe it should show it exactly how it is on the desktop.

That’s all suggestions I got. Thank you for your reading.

We have poor eyesight, so in vertical display mode, we could really benefit from having grid lines (at least horizontally) to visually distinguish each message. We have read various solutions on the Internet, but none seems to work at least not in dark theme mode, which is the default for a great many people with vision impairments (or just plain tired eyes). Perhaps some solutions that once worked have been uprooted, so to speak, during the course of Thunderbird updates.

We are used to having grid lines in Outlook (desktop). We are currently exploring switching to Thunderbird, but it needs to support our vision needs. For us, this capability is fundamental, not optional.

We are comfortable making config entries, creating and working in userChrome.css, and the like. We would be grateful for any guidance in this regard.

Thank you kindly!

Read Aloud is not producing sound in Thunderbird 128.7.1esr (64-bit), Windows 11 Pro. The app does highlight the text it is reading and progresses through the email, but there is no sound. I have checked various voices and tried to sound test the Piper voices. No luck. Windows Narrator (not ideal) will read the emails. I have checked every sound setting I can think of several times. I contacted Read Aloud support and they were unable to resolve my issue; they did confirm it worked in their Thunderbird app.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Why Firefox lacks having right click option (context menu) for multiple search engines like Chrome (Chromium browsers) and Edge has somewhat "Chrome-like omnibar in Mozilla Firefox"?

If I am using a certain search engine as default but don't use it all the time or want to use another without changing the default search engine or want to search a term or sentence via any search engine, then Firefox has no such option or addons (yes, checked thoroughly for latter).

Opera has from day one, Vivaldi also has it, Chrome allows it via extensions, Edge does via addons, Brave as chrome does via addons, Naver Whale (South Korean browser, underrated, seriously) has options to put more than 1 search engine for search results.

Adding images below for reference.

Why Firefox is seriously so old and outdated and nowhere close to standards of 2024 and 2025?

Somebody made a post 10 years ago around 2014 🤯🤯🤯 and Firefox, as usual went their way as they are doing now.

Tested on different browsers with different phones. Firefox for Android overlays keyboards on top of the webpage instead of resizing the viewport. This partially blocks the view of responsive webpages and most times blocks the view of text input boxes while typing.

Image attached shows how the keyboard is overlaid on top of the end of the footer of the Mozilla website. Last image shows a Chrome screenshot for comparison.
