When we delete messages you constantly now show a panel offering to purge all our deletion folders. STOP showing it all the time. There is no option offered to never show the message again. This was discussed at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1317882 . Various points were covered but the main point was not resolved.

How do I disable the ANNOYING message box I get every time I want to send a message to the trash folder. Thunderbird keeps asking me if I want the message deleted to save disk space. This just started in the past week. I want my deleted messages to go to the trash folder and I will manage that folder. I can't seem to find anything in settings that lets me disable this option.

Version 78.2.2 (64 bit) automatically installed today. Other than the changed interface (which I can do without), it now asks me when I delete an email message: "The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk. This operation will save about 1.1 GB of disk space. Select the option below to let Thunderbird do this automatically without asking you."

I do not want to purge my deleted messages. If I want to purge an email, I hold down the shift and delete keys and the email message is not saved to my Trash folder. However, I save my old Trash messages in a separate archive. I do not want to be constantly asked whether I want to purge these messages because I do not want to do so. This is becoming a nuisance

How do I stop this?

Thanks for your help.

"Compact Folders" message is confusing

I'm using Thunderbird 87.0b3 (32 bit) on a 64 bit PC I recently deleted an email and saw the message:

“Compact Folders. The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk. This operation will save you 202MB of disk space. Select the option below to let Thunderbird do this automatically without asking you.

[] Remove message deletions automatically and do not ask me. Proceed Cancel”

This message confused me. It was entitled “Compact Folders”, but then stated it would PURGE messages from my disc. Without ticking [] Remove message deletions automatically, I selected “Proceed”. I was very relieved to see that messages were compacted but none of my messages in “Trash” had been deleted.

I strongly suggest that this message should be rewritten to say: Compact folders. If you allow Thunderbird to compact your folders this operation will save xxx MB of disk space. Select the option below to let Thunderbird do this automatically without asking you. [] Compact folders automatically and do not ask me.

WIth a recent update, thunderbird now puts an annoying pop up almost every time I click on the "junk" icon of a new message to send it to the junk folder. The pop up offers to purge messages from the disk, and gives "proceed" or "cancel" options. It also offers a check box to not ask again and do it automatically.

I know how to compact folders and do it on my own as needed (and through the setting for doing that automaticallywhen too much space is being used).

I've read the other thread in which it was explained that this "purging" does not delete messages from trash, but that does not tell me whether it deletes messages from the Junk folder.

I do not want any messages ever deleted automatically - I sometime need to go back and check junk or trash messages.

1) does the "purge" function delete any messages from any folders (in particular from junk or trash)? 2) how do I stop the annoying pop up asking me to "proceed" or "cancel" purging each time I click the "junk" icon to move a message to the junk folder?

Thank you very much for any help!

BTW, if "purging" through the pop up is not deleting any messages, and is just compacting folders, then the pop up is very poorly worded.

I just finished reading other people complaining about the popu to "purge deleted items"

I concur! in fact I find this so disgusting I am considering leaving thunderbird as a email client.

I reallly love that linux, mac, and windows ...no matter the OS I can get a same client, similiar experience (I use different laptops when as a tech repairing servers, to machines.

I have even myself had data lost, personal communications with family who died, things I quite cared about and (yes I have backups) but this push to make the client work better by limiting data, imposing order, and cleanliness is moronic..dangerous, and I do see that the quotas and options for data do not really work, this merely seems to help performance and keep most recent email but absolutely ruins any real longterm archiving (email is not meant to be longterm, or a "archive" ...I know I say this too) maybe we need to adjust software for the way people want it? the way people live? and not how we designate it to be used? (you do not like ,,write your own, I know).. if this trend to increase performance by cutting and crippling old email (what if I want 40 gig of email ?) .. maybe a better interface for holding, packaging and backing up, and restoring email?? heck a schedular to bump it out to google drive? I recently found a proggie that does this for my cellphone, contacts, sms, options, apps, which apps,,, gotta say that in thunderbird would be amazing? (restore from cloud backup, backup to cloud)?? I love thunderbird and hope some development can happen to smooth this out? Thankyou! (I used to try and use the gmail and yahoo folders like this also and leave only copies ,,,)

I am managing 6 different mailboxes with Thunderbird. I need some space on my Mac (Big Sur, 11.2.3) so I ran OmniDisk Sweeper and I found out that TB profiles have 66.5GB. The first three IMAP files are 20.3GB, 17.7GB, 16.0GB. Is there a safe way to delete them or make them lighter? Don't say to compact folders because since I don't have space it's not possible to do it.

Of course, for instance, the TB 20.3GB IMAP file on GMAIL is 8GB. So there is something not working properly in the sync.

Any Ideas?

Thanks, S.

I am running Thunderbird v78.10.0 with Lightning.

Recently, Thunderbird began prompting me to compact my folders. Because I really don't trust this process for apps in general (not just TB), I closed TB and made a backup copy of my TB profile first, then I opened TB and told it to go ahead. It stopped partway through and said it could not complete the process because a file was in use by another process (I think--I wish I had saved the message).

Anyway, after TB opened, I noticed that most of my calendar reminders were gone and a lot of my appointments were missing from the calendar.

So I just closed TB, restored the profile from my backup, and everything was back to normal. (Needless to say, I did not compact this time.)

Is there a known problem with compacting folders? Is there any way to troubleshoot this?

Thanks!

How can I compact my mail without purging any messages?

Prior to a recent update I'd get a message to compact, I'd compact and all was well and none of my messages were purged/deleted.

After the update (I'm on version 75.5.0), I get "The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk. This operation will save about 84.7 MB of disk space. Select the option below to let Thunderbird do this automatically without asking you."

I've read the few other threads on this and it's still not clear to me. Can I compact without deleting anything?

Thanks.

--I may be treading on thin ice regarding my habit of saving all email and am seeking advice on how to do it properly so as to ensure I don't have issues going forward as the years stack up.--

I never empty my Thunderbird trash bin. I've found this invaluable as many times questions come up regarding years old emails (emails that I could never anticipate I'd need) that can only be answered by searching through years worth of emails to find the answer.

Many, many times this technique has paid off as I've found answers to my questions in years old emails that I never thought I'd need ...emails that if I'd permanently deleted, I'd be left with no answers. I do compact my folders but as I mentioned, never get rid of any of the emails in my deleted folder. Is this OK or am I setting my self up for failure?

And BTW, the not long ago change in Thunderbird that produces the message when deleting emails from the "Inbox" that says something like, "...compact your folder to purge messages..." always scares me off as I do not want any messages "purged" from any folders so I always select the "cancel" option and then right click on a folder to compact it. ...No doubt there's something about this whole process I don't understand. Is there a proper way to keep all deleted email that still allows me to use the "Edit>Find> Search Messages" function to search all past emails at once? Thank you An ancillary question to this is does "purging" emails do the same thing as "deleting" email?

Hello - Recently, I deleted thousands of old e-mail messages from my gmail server. When I launched Thunderbird, the Compact Folders dialog box popped up asking if I want do have the deleted messages purged from the disk.

I am afraid of deleting old messages that I already downloaded to Thunderbird. I just wanted them deleted from the server.

When I read messages that arrive in my Thunderbird inbox, I archive the ones that I want saved to a folder in 'Local Folders'. Any other emails I receive are sent to trash. Sent e-mails are stored in my 'sent' folder and have not been moved to the Local Folders.

Please let me know what I will be 'deleting' if I agree to this option.

How to I turn off this annoying pop up that wants to bypass my Trash Folder. I like my Trash Folder. It keeps me from being an idiot and losing important things because of a misclick or because I didn't need something I later find out I did. I have been using e-mail since the early Compuserve days 30 years ago, gave that up for Thunderbird.
