I'm in the process of cleaning up Thunderbird e-mail before moving to a new computer. I started with 11,593 e-mails in my Inbox and 7,799 e-mails in my Sent folder. I'm now down to 7,634 in my Inbox and 4,965 in my Sent folder. I've allocated 2 weeks for this process and found that it's taking me about 3 hours per day to meet my daily goals. I'm finding that I'm spending at LEAST half the time responding to "Empty-Trash/Compact-folders" requests. There are times I can delete 50 e-mails at a time without getting a request. Other times I will try to delete ten e-mails and get the request. With the old version of Thunderbird I could literally delete hundreds of e-mails at a time. Can you help? Russ Bukwa Yardley, PA ps. I have intentionally given you specific numbers. Based on my software- and test-engineering experience, I speculate you need to create a stress test to solve this nagging problem.

Long time thunderbird user but kinda at my wits end. I'm moving to a new laptop and I have noted that the export function does not like profiles larger than 2Gb. Mine is approx 10.5Gb. I followed what seems to be the suggested protocol

- install on new machine, don't create any account, close thunderbird - erase the profile folder and the profile.ini in the new install (I guess this is optional really) - close thunderbird on old machine - copy the protocol and .ini files from old machine to the new one. (there is only 1 file: 1rrz6vdm.default which

     seems odd maybe?)

- crank up the new thunderbird

Well, I get something, but basically it is a pale ghost of what is there in my old machine. Have tried dozens of variants on this process with no love.

Help? Thanks

When I attempt to add a Gmail account, I get this error - "Unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username, or password"

Below are the steps with screenshots: - checked for no cookies to prevent Google from asking for an actual login - no stored google passwords - didn't put in my password on setup - TB finds the available configuration - prompted to login at google - add google password - allow access - error message

I have restarted Thunderbird. I have checked for updates (even though I have it on auto-update).

Are there settings on my Google or Gmail account that could prevent this from working?

Hi, I recently had to reset my pc and reinstall all applications including Thunderbird. The following were the steps I took after Thunderbird was reinstalled: 1. I then copied my profile data from a data backup to my laptop into C:>Users>username>AppData>Roaming>Thunderbird>Profiles using internet explorer. 2. I then changed my Thunderbird Account settings to use my original profile in Server settings under Local Directory. 3. At the same time I also changed my mail server from imap.bigpond.com to imap.telstra.com however it still recorded the server type as POP Mail Server.

When Thunderbird application restarted after the above changes, I noticed in the Mail Folder display that my Inbox folders had duplicated along with Deleted, Trash, Draft, Archive & Sent folders e.g. it showed Inbox and relevant sub folders and INBOX-1 with the same relevant sub-folders. Some of the sub folders in Inbox were missing stored emails and these were found under the INBOX-1 subfolder. Also under the Local Folders section it also displayed current emails under the Inbox folder which are recorded in the Mail Inbox folder. So not knowing why this occurred or to resolve, I decided to uninstall Thunderbird and then download it again. By doing this, it has fixed the display issues mentioned above in the Thunderbird application but I still have duplicated Inbox, Sent, Deleted & Archives on my laptop under my Thunderbird profile folders. So my query is....do I attempt to move the data from the duplicated folders to the main folders or just leave it as is seeing it appears to be working?

Hello,

The latest version, 128.10.0esr, was recently released, and one of the changes is:

Changed color override defaults with high contrast mode on macOS and Linux

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/128.10.0esr/releasenotes/?uri=/thunderbird/releasenotes/&locale=en-US&version=128.10.0&channel=esr&os=Darwin&buildid=20250425031534

I use dark mode, but I prefer to view the email body in light mode, as this is typically the sender’s default formatting. To achieve this, I previously configured: • Settings → General → Fonts & Colors → Colors • Set Text to black and Background to white • Enabled “Override the colors specified by the content with my selections above:” and set it to “Only with High Contrast themes”

However, since this update, this setting no longer works. Now, the only workaround is to manually click the “Turn dark mode off” button for each email, which does work. But it’s inconvenient to do this every time.

Is there a way to disable dark mode for all email bodies by default, so I don’t need to click the button each time?

Thank you!

Yours,

I can't figure out how to get a threaded view for a conversation in Thunderbird to behave the same as a threaded view for a conversation in Outlook.

1. From what I can tell, the ASCENDING setting works as expected: a) Single messages and thread topics in the selected folder are sorted ascending by date b) Messages within a thread are also sorted ascending.

2. The DESCENDING view does this, which I feel is confusing: a) Single messages and thread topics in the selected folder are sorted descending. For threads, it weirdly uses the timestamp of the FIRST message in the thread instead of the most recent message. b) Messages within a thread are sorted ascending instead of descending.

3. I would prefer the DESCENDING view to do this: a) Single messages and threads in the selected folder are sorted descending. For threads, it should use the timestamp of the LAST message in the thread. b) Messages within a thread should be sorted descending instead of ascending.

Is there a way to get behavior 3?

Thanks!

Thunderbird 138/139, Windows 11 Pro 23H2. While composing a message, after a few lines the app freezes. Both the compose window and the main TB window freeze. Only opening the Windows Task manager allows me to close them. This did not happen with earlier versions.

If I save the message every few seconds while composing I can get most of the message back and continue after restarting TB. This behavior is the same in both the normal and troubleshooting TB modes. I can't even find a crash log to send to Mozilla.

Where shall I look next?

The automatic setup fails to find the settings when creating a new mail account.

Manually setting up the account settings returns an error that Thunderbird can't find the server. The system has no issues finding the server. Calendar in Thunderbird has no issues finding the server but when trying to setup an email account I get the error that it can't find the server.

Pressing continue creates the settings but fails to create a username and password for the account.

There is now way to create a username and password for the account so it fails to connect to the server.

There is no way to create an account by providing all the information. We don't need a nanny, we need something that works.

Why did we mess with something that worked? How do I add an account manually?

Should have purchase a Brother printer years ago.

Great printer! Good price, no shipping cost, arrived as estimated, solid, easy to set up and works well. Brother web site easy to navigate and has all the software, drivers manuals and anything that may be wanted available. Installed on a computer with Windows but when a mandatory Microsoft update corrupted my system, installed Linux Mint and installation of the Brother printer again was simple; just required a little additional reading. One last item to mention. When it comes to replacement cartridges, they are considerably less than Pantum, HP and others. I use printers primarily for documents, and although there may be periods of non-use, do not have to be concerned about cartridge drying up like on a bubble-jet. Precisely why I just use the HP All-In-One for scanning now just for scanning. Bubble-jet cartridges do not last as long or have as good of print. Our neighbors to the North know how to make a printer just as local Garmin knows how to make and provide customer support for GPS and their products. Been with computers since about 1982 and can say without question, best printer I have had to date. Highly recommended this printer. Puts the others to shame. Walmart can show pride in offering the Brother printer to customers.

Due to issues with Windows10, I decided to change the last of my computers to Linux Mint 21.3.

The plan was to back up the Thunderbird profiles (as usual) on my main desktop to a flash drive, install Mint and then copy the profiles to the Thunderbird that is preloaded with Mint; I have moved Thunderbird numerous times on various computers to new computers and/or new installations. Example: from Win95 to Win98, Win98 to Win7, and Win7 to Win10 without incident. This is my first time performing a Thunderbird transfer to Mint although I have performed quite a few Mint installations.

Unfortunately, after backing up the Thunderbird profiles and other vitals, and successfully loading Mint, something went terribly wrong. After the final reboot required by Mint, files on an external portable ss drive starting being erased, and then the Mint OS on the C drive of the computer would not start.

The computer would not allow me to install Mint again so I loaded Windows7 (since the upgrade to Win10 was done as instructed on the M$ site so I did not have an installation disk or image), and released the secure boot. Then Mint was able to be installed but presented a new challenge.

The challenge is the Thunderbird structure in Mint is different than the Thunderbird structure in Mint. Although I created one of my email accounts in Thunderbird on Mint, there is not a profile I could locate. Therefore, the profiles from Windows cannot simply be copied and then the pkcs11.txt deleted. Therefore, although I have the data, I do not know how to use it or recreate the email accounts. I dread the thought of purchasing a small computer with Win10 just so I can access my email accounts and numerous folders of email. However, at this time I may not have any choice. Not sure if there are any repair shops that could "fix" the problem.

In the past I would simple copy one email account at a time, msf files and .sbd sub-folders, but again, I cannot locate a profile or even an email account in Mint for Thunderbird.

Can this issue I be resolved, or am I trying to go up the creek without a paddle? This is the first time that I can recall not being able a solve a software problem. I have also never had a problem with any Ubuntu or Mint installation although there are always issues with Windows.

I am an experienced TB user, but at the moment at a total loss for a solution to my problem.

I use Windows 11 Pro. When trying to click on image attachments for PNG and JPG/JPEG pictures, the behaviour is different: PNG images are displayed just fine in the Windows photo viewer, JPEG images are not. If I open the same images via double-click from the local disk, both open just fine in the same viewer. I have checked the file type settings already and even changed them to always ask me for JPEG images. I get asked just fine and see that TB wants to open the Windows photo viewer for both files types, but while it works for PNG, it does not for JPEG. There is no error message, just nothing happens, at least nothing visible to me.

When trying the same from a new user profile, it works as expected. I tried TB safe mode, deactivating all add-ons, but it still does not work in my main user profile.

I would be glad to receive hints for how to solve or at least debug this. Thanks in advance.

This has been re-posted. In error my first post said ‘Firefox’ NOT ‘Thunderbird’.

Hi all. I recently had a terminal problem on my Win 10 computer so have bought a new Win 11 machine. I ran Thunderbird mail on the old Win 10, had 5 email accounts, had about 12 local folders and had my Profile stored in a folder on the desktop. The folder was moved there some years ago but don 't remember how I did it. I moved it there because this folder gets backed up every night.

So, I have managed to remove the HDD from my old machine and have located the 'old' profile folder. I now need to re-install Thunderbird on the new machine and match it up to my old profile folder (I think...)

Any advice on how to do that?

I use Thunderbird on Windows 10; I have a verizon.net email account which I access through Thunderbird. Verizon.net email is transferred to the server from AOL Mail, and I have been able to get and send my emails on Thunderbird at verizon.net for years. This week, after Thunderbird's latest update, I have not received any incoming mail on Thunderbird, but I can see my emails on AOL Mail. The technical expert I consulted deduced that the problem is with Thunderbird such that AOL is not connecting to the incoming mail server, even after the password was changed. I can send messages successfully from Thunderbird; the outgoing mail works.
