Random Total Freezes

For a while now, I've been having recurring issues with Firefox desktop freezing and becoming totally unresponsive. If there's any pattern to what causes it, I haven't been able to notice it; sometimes it happens as soon as I open the browser, sometimes it happens after several hours, sometimes it happens twice in ten minutes, sometimes it happens twice in a few hours (however, I can count the number of days it's happened less than twice in one day in the past few weeks on the fingers of one hand). When the browser freezes, it becomes totally unresponsive - it doesn't fade or display "Not Responding", and Task Manager shows nothing abnormal, but it doesn't accept any input at all, any video or other animated material that may have been displaying freezes, and it can only be "fixed" by force quitting from the task manager and reopening. This is exclusively a firefox issue; other programs open at the same time as the browser freezes are not affected.

The only real lead I have as to what could be going on is that sometimes, things don't freeze all at once, but in a cascading effect. For example, tabs, bookmarks, etc. might not highlight when moused over, but still accept the clicks, or selecting another tab might causes the address bar to display the URL of the selected tab, but the screen displayed in the window will not change. Once these cascading changes start, they generally progress to total freeze before I have a chance to do much with that information (only a few seconds), but it's unusual enough behavior to be worth noticing.

Things I've already tried that haven't fixed the issue:

  • Reducing the number of tabs used and otherwise reducing Firefox's system resource usage has not impacted the problem in any way.
  • Running in Troubleshoot Mode has not had a consistent effect on the problem (the most recent time I did, the browser ran stably for longer than I could stand to use the internet without my ad blocker, but this is only one data point in an already inconsistent spread; prior instances of the problem have occurred in Troubleshoot Mode)
  • Disabling hardware acceleration has not fixed the issue.
  • The issue has persisted through multiple refreshes and at least one full uninstall and clean reinstall.
  • The issue persisted after creating and switching to a new profile multiple times.
  • The issue persisted after renaming places.sqlite
  • The issue persisted after clearing cache and cookies multiple times.
  • The issue persisted after clearing downloads and history.
  • And very likely some other stuff that I'm forgetting, I've been trying to fix this on my own for a while now.

On startup TB pops an error box up saying ' There is no email program associated to perform this action'. When dismissed TB continues to open normally. No other errors seen during operation.

I have checked my Win 10 Control Panel Apps options. TB is the email default. MailTo, file type .eml and all other settings I can see are set to TB as well.

Folks:

I am running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro ,version 1511. I had been running Thunderbird 52.9.1 without any problems whatsoever. A few days ago, Thunderbird upgraded to 60.3.1. Thunderbird became unstable and unusable immediately upon start. Taskbar and Process Explorer showed that the program was running, but the window would not stay open or even stay stable.

I was able to use System Restore to revert to the previous version of Thunderbird, and although the calendar functionality is gone, it seems to work fine.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I accidently powered off system (PC with Windows 10) without closing programs, including Thunderbird. After restarting the system and opening Thunderbird, TB crashed. I have tried numerous fixes:

  • Installed the latest version of TB (from 78.11.0 to 102.8.0)
  • Opening TB in Safe Mode (disabling all add-ons, reset toolbars & controls)
  • Uninstall & reinstall TB

All result in the Crash Reporter dialog, with Report Contents. I can supply the report contents. (It wasn't obvious how to attach to this forum post.)

One KB item (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1337785) suggested that the issue may have to do with session.json file. Based on the file timestamp, that seems likely. But I don't know how to edit this file to fix the problem.

I also created a new TB profile, with does not crash on startup, but I cannot get email properly configured.

I have hundreds (maybe 1000s) of email stored in TB that I cannot access.

I would greatly appreciate any help!

I have 4 different gmail accounts that I use thunderbird to manage, along with local folders. Starting today, I cannot send messages. I get a dialog box with no error codes, underneath is another dialog box showing send progress with the eternal circle. Have rebooted, made sure each account has a unique SMTP server description. Worked fine until today. No updates that I know of.

West Virginia has a website to download old death certificates, but they wont load. There's nothing but a blank page. I'm not positive that it's a Firefox problem, as a friend of mine who uses IE cant load them either, however, she CAN load them on her Tablet. As a historian, I really need to get these records for my research, so I was wondering if someone could go to the site and see of the records appear for them to be downloaded. This is a direct link to one of the records:

I switched my email host and am trying to change the account settings in Thunderbird. When I change the server name a popup appears and asks me to restart or cancel. It doesn't let me continue to change any of the other server settings. Selecting either option changes the server name back to the original.

So I delete the email account and its smtp server. When I restart they both reappear. When I add a new email account and smtp server, it disappears when I restart.

When I select Help/Troubleshooting Information the deleted accounts are gone from under Mail And News Accounts. When I restart Thunderbird, the deleted accounts and server returns.

I changed the settings for a different email account that is on a different host last summer with no problems. Thanks

Yesterday Thunderbird wouldn't open on my laptop. I rebooted the computer and still couldn't get it to open. I started to get a crash report window when I tried. I used MozBackup to save my emails today. So, should I uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird? If so, could you let me know how to do that? Also, do you think the backup I made today is corrupted? I backed up a couple of weeks ago so I won't be missing too much if I have to restore the earlier backup. Thanks for your help! -Jeffer

Hi, i just got a new laptop (Asus Zephryus G16, 2560 x 1600 screen) and after installing Firefox there is a thin white border to the left of the screen when running in fit screen. This problem is not present when in a windowed mode or in F11 full screen.

I tried updating the Intel Arc drivers but this did not fix the problem. Changing to compatibility mode also did not fix te problem.

PS: in the uploaded screenshots it is quite dificult to see the white line(because the background is also white), but when the image is viewed in a new tab it is visible.

Thanks

Help?

This is a problem on my father's computer. I'm a computer tech, he is not. On MY computer, I haven't had this problem with Thunderbird 60, even though I also use Gmail (as well as other e-mail providers).

Immediately after Thunderbird updated itself to version 60, it would crash within 1-2 seconds of Thunderbird starting.

Troubleshooting: - Rebooted computer several times. - Starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode.

Still crashes.

I created a new Thunderbird Profile and set up his Gmail address using OAuth2. Successfully receiving e-mails with no crashes.

I exported his address books and calendars from the old profile, and imported into the new profile. Copied the Local Folders files manually from the old profile to the new. Got all the Thunderbird settings the way he likes. No crashes.

An hour later, Thunderbird starts crashing again. Now it only crashes when a new e-mail comes in.

Troubleshooting: - Rebooted computer. - Starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode. - Disabled filters.

Still crashing.

Submitted Thunderbird Crash Report with details and my father's e-mail address, which I will not put here in this public forum.

It's been nearly a year I think. A good six months, at any rate.

I filed a case on it about 3 months ago, but the "My Questions" list doesn't show it.

At the time, I was treated to an entire digest of how I was supposed to examine 100 tasks going on in my system to see if one of them was causing memory problems... As if!

But here's the thing:

  1. NO OTHER PROGRAM ON MY SYSTEM experiences the kind of stalls that Tbird sees,
and they are all laboring under the same constraints.
  2. TBIRD STALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF WRITING A MESSAGE -- TWO OR THREE TIMES, in some cases.
That is a simple inability to grasp the concept of MULTI-TASKING in software.
Background processes can stall all they want. Foreground processes should NEVER see them.
  3. TBIRD DOES NOT DOWNLOAD MESSAGES UNLESS AND UNTIL I AM USING IT.
I can have it open on the desktop for as long as I want. But once I click in it, THEN I see the
"downloading messages" alert. That too is a SIMPLE FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND MULTI-TASKING.
If the program is running, it should have been downloading things in the background--not
wait until I am attempting to use it to DO something.
 4. TBIRD SUPPORT APPARENTLY BELIEVES IT IS BEST TO BLAME THE USER.
Again, a simple failure to understand the concept of multi-tasking is the root cause of the
problems I have been experiencing. But reporting the issue did no good whatsoever.
Instead, I was supposed to spend a day diagnosing memory issues -- "issues" that DO NOT
AFFECT ANY OTHER PROGRAM on my computer.

So I gave up. I moved to Outlook. Sure enough, no stalls. Big relief. I have my inbox set up, and just imported my contacts. That just leaves a few years' worth of old messages I wish I could transfer. So I'll keep TBird installed, just to access those old messages, when I need them.

But as for daily use, no. It's history. I write this message to explain why, in hopes that someone will learn from it.

A couple of days ago Thunderbird started flashing views. It went from the vertical view I've always used to one where it only shows the folders then emails, sender, size, and date spread horizontally across the whole widescreen. It was unresponsive and used a lot of cpu when doing this. I could not click on an email and read it as there is on section to do that anymore. I found I could right click on an email and after many seconds the right click menu would appear and I could choose "open in new window" and access it that way. I've tried restarting in safe mode and uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird with no effect. It's now stable with the whole screen folder, email list shown. The only way to read emails is in a new window or tab. The layout options under view do not work. The included screenshot is the only view I now have. Any help, ideas would be greatly appreciated. Very similar to -> https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1427103

My firefox now freezes when I click in the URL bar. NO solution I have found so far other than task manager -> end task and restart the browser. Occasionally that will work, other times it will immediately freeze again.

Historically I have had a LOT of tabs open, more recently less than 20 tabs. I have never seen the issue before.

Windows 10 22H2 Ryzen 3600 32GB RAM Nvidia RTX 3060 LHR 3 Monitors 2 - 1920x1200, 1 - 1920x1080

What I have tried so far: - reboot - restart firefox - "refresh" firefox - troubleshooting mode - removed all extensions - removed some extensions - reduced tabs down to a few - tried to click in the start page search instead of url bar - turned off hardware acceleration - turned on hardware acceleration - turned off TLS DNS - using only 1 window at a time instead of 2 or 3 - waited for an hour or so and window did not become responsive

None of these solutions fixed the issue. A screenshot would be useless as the window looks fine, but the UI is unresponsive.
