I recently had my laptop fail, but I had my profile folder backed up to a remote location so I've been trying to move it to a replacement system. I followed the instructions found here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles . Both were Windows 7 machines running FF 44.0.

After backing up the existing profile information, I replaced the contents of my existing profile directory with my profile, and it worked great. Then I closed Firefox, did some things, and tried to restart it. No connection. Any external pages hang forever rather than load. I repeated in safe mode, restarted my PC, checked proxy settings, and used the Refresh Firefox feature under about:support. No change. I even tried restoring the original profile and the problem persisted.

Then I tried reinstalling Firefox and it worked fine, and even had my restored profile. But as soon as I restarted, there was no connection. Through trial and error, I've found simply running the installer without first uninstalling works as well. I have to assume it's a config issue between the systems. The only major difference I can find is that the old version of FF was installed on drive C while this is on drive D (though I've tried installing it on C without any success).

Any assistance would be appreciated, especially some that keeps my history. Worst case I can nuke the profile and restart with just restore with bookmarks and passwords, but I'd prefer to avoid that.

I have been having this issue for a long long time now , but for some reason firefox refuses to play the mp3 files on certain sites . http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/dota2.gamepedia.com/a/a5/Alch_spawn_04.mp3 Example this one .

I do not have any technical knowledge as to know why does it not work , i have no clue what is causing it. Thing is , i tried installing chrome , same thing ... no sound either.

Im using Windows 7 , if thats any help .

I tried googling stuff up , found bunch of *solutions* saying to install stuff , but i cannot even install them on my pc .

So yeah , question is ... is there any way to play that files ? I keep stumbling upon embedded audio , and its not working and its kinda frustrating to say the least :/

PS: Stuff is working fine on my tablet ....

This simple script snippet has always worked in the past, and it even works correctly in IE. But in Firefox it opens a new window at about 400 x 400 pixels.

<a href="javascript: void(0)" onclick="window.open('January.shtml','windowname1','width=850, height=600');

return false;">Click here for simple popup window</a>

What needs to be changes in the FF configuration so it works correctly?

Failure to get this to work correctly means I will have to discontinue supporting Firefox and go to Internet Explorer where the script works.

Thanks for any support you can provide.

I have already tried some hints in the support page, but no luck with the the suggestions for "link.o"

I have Windows 10. I have a current subscription to McAfee through Time Warner Cable and I downloaded "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" I don't stray from Yahoo, Outlook,Aol and a few shopping websites. I did however download "My Turbo PC" to try to solve my browser freezing but I didn't buy the unlock key. My "spyware" "malware" or "virus" problem didn't start until "My Turbo PC".

Can anyone please help me get the unwanted program off of my computer please?

Thank you.

In recent weeks, I have encountered more than a few websites that Firefox (ver. 44.0.2) does not handle. Main my problems have been (1) either the browser fails to respond when clicking "submit" or (2) page printing produces garbage. I have reproduced these problems on two Windows 10 machines running Firefox, so I don't think the problem is my installation. Moreover, in every instance, my problems have been solved by switching to Chrome or Edge and completing the same actions. All other aspects of Firefox are working perfectly on my machines.

Might anyone have suggestions about what is going on here?

I have used Firefox almost since its inception. While I have, over time, flirted with other browsers, I've always returned to Firefox. But these recent problems may be the last straw because they impeded workflow, increase frustration and require a significant commitment of unnecessary time. Whether the issue is with Firefox or particular websites really does not matter because the result is the same.

Thanks for your help.

Finding the cause of slow speed - tabgroups & optimization

I have a decent enough laptop (intel i5-2540, year 2011, 4GB RAM, Samsung EVO 850 SSD in SATA-3 mode) running Windows XP pro. I have been feeling for past few months that my firefox page loading is sluggish. I have looked into some optimizations (like this thread here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=445540), and below i have attached an image of the preferences, narrowed by search using "browser.cache." and also there is an image of "about:cache".

My question is .... Is the slowness i am seeing a result of

1. The 38 tab groups that i have, each group with about 15 tabs in it ? I know tabgroups are going in few days, and i plan to use the add-on called "tabgroup" which is the same functionality.

2. Some preference getting messed up ? (I setup cache to move into RAM, since there is plenty to spare in this browser-machine). My intention is to get rid of the disk cache, which would constantly write to SSD and lower longevity of the SSD. On the other hand, i also read articles that say disk cache is persistant across machine boots, and hence more useful than having cache in RAM. I would like some guidance from experts.

3. Simply an evolution of firefox which has resulted in bloating and slowness ? I have timed many times by rebooting my PC. It takes about 40 seconds to bring up firefox, with no other app running after reboot. Many of the pages take more than 5 seconds to load from popular website forums like Dell forum, tomshardware.com etc. I have cable modem that gives 30+ Mbps, which i have tested to verify. So, network speed is not the issue.

4. No one testing firefox releases on Windows xp anymore ? Upgrading OS to Win 7 is not possible on this machine.

I have deactivated all plugins except the very basic that i need (that has not improved my speed). So, Any suggestion to speed up my setup is welcome. I have looked into faster-fox which was mentioned in the thread i gave above, but i am not running it now. I am in the search for ways to speed up firefox. I am running latest version, and within days i will be moving to FF 45 when it comes out.

Thanks for your input.

After updating to 45.0 a large number of tabs starting saving as "about:blank" instead of saving the actual tab info. Due to this, I kept losing a lot of tab info and history.

I originally thought it has something to do with the spin-off of Tab Groups since that was a feature I was using, but it's not. I reverted back to 44.0.2 with the Tab Group add-on and the problem does not happen there.

This seems to happen either with the native Firefox sessions or with Session Manager add-on.

The basic behavior is that when I go to restart Fifefox after shutting down, instead of restoring all of my tabs to their state prior to shut down, many of them tabs are just "about:blank" types tabs with no history.

I initially thought it had something to do with how the tabs were loading, but it isn't. I can actually open up the session info and see that the tabs were *saved* as "about:blank" so the problem occurs when the session saves.

Is it possible that there is now a limit to the number of tabs that can be saved as part of a session now (like 128 or 256)? If there is, then there needs to be a better way to inform users of this rather than just trashing their session data and restoring a blank tab where there had been a functional one before.
