I am migrating from Outlook to Thunderbird.

I have purchased a new computer running windows 8.

I have copied the outlook data file from my old computer to he new computer.

I have installed Thunderbird on my new computer.

I try to import existing email stored in Outlook to Thunderbird.

I get the message "either there is no default mail client..." I have made Outlook the default mail client and have rebooted the computer.

Any way to get thunderbird to recognize the Outlook file?

moving Thunderbird data to a new computer didn't work - help, please!

I've - I hope! - followed all the Thunderbird Support instructions on moving a Profile from one computer to another with a different OS (save a copy of the profile file from the first computer, download and install TB on new computer, locate its "Profile" folder, and then either paste the contents of the former profile file into the new profile file [thus overwriting the latter]), then open TB . . . but it didn't work.

I then tried the same, but with a slightly different method: I copied the name of the new profile file, gave it to the old computer's profile file, then renamed the new profile file, and pasted the old profile file -- now with the proper new name -- into the new directory. . . that, too, didn't work.

I've spent a few hours trying to get this to work, and am nearing the point of giving up on TB as an email solution.

Any help would be very welcome!

I've been reading for two days now but still no solution. Background, have been wanting to try a linux desktop for some time. WinXP going away provided the opportunity. Recently installed Mint 16 Cinnamon on an IBM Thinkpad x41 laptop (overwriting WinXP) with no problems. System connected to the internet fine via Firefox. Also Mint performed all updates as expected.

Next moved on to configuring e-mail using Thunderbird. Entered account info and TB found servers and settings (below) for that particular e-mail address (which I have verified on many sites as being the correct settings):

Incoming IMAP Server:imap-mail.outlook.com Port: 993 SSL: SSL/TLS Authentication: Normal Password

Outgoing: smtp Server:smtp-mail.outlook.com Port: 587 SSL: STARTSSL Authentication: Normal Password

However, when TB attempts to authenticate the account I get "Configuration could not be verified - is the username and password correct?"

I have logged into the account via MS Outlook as well as via the outlook.com web app and verified the user ID and password are correct. I have telnet'd to the individual imap and smtp servers and established a connection so I know I can see the servers via the listed ports.

Thinking it might be a Linux Mint issue - I downloaded TB on a windows7 machine. Same issue. I then tried creating a TB account using my g-mail address figuring I'd try some other servers. All worked fine, found the servers, authenticated and downloaded my mail. I was also able to send messages from this account. Back to the Linux Machine, I did the same thing with the g-mail account and had similar success.

So I think I have isolated it to TB authentication issues with outlook.com but I have no idea how to fix it.

Would greatly appreciate any help you can offer. Being a good Linux N00B, I've read until my eyeballs are ready to fall out but haven't found the solution.

Thank you TC

Moving to Thunderbird - I am trying to eliminate my use of WinXP and migrate fully to Mac OSX. I have successfully transferred my many dbx folders (3.65GB total of messages) of Outlook Express into TB24.4.0 (as null, msf, and sbd extension files) when both Outlook and XP TB reside on the same XP virtual machine (Parallels) of my Mac. When I attempt to populate TB in the Mac OS10.8.5 side with the files I cannot. With Tools>Import there is no option for Outlook files, just Apple & Eudora mail. From within Mac TB, I am able to locate Profile location (Tools>Acct setup>local folders), but in Finder, it does not appear - is hidden. Thus, neither of these approaches allow import of my emails or replacement of current folders with my emails. In my first step, I was able to transfer the address .wab file to Mac TB using import. No luck since. Advice is appreciated.

Being involved with a number of separate businesses, I have 4 main email accounts which seamonkey has maintained separately, but having migrated to thunderbird I seem to be getting all of the emails combined together and keep picking up the wrong archive when trying to save material. How do I tell thunderbird not to mix up email accounts? I've disabled all but one from the 'global' search, but that does not seem to do anything useful.

Transfer from Outlook to TB works fine and I see all messages. Then I copy the Outlook Import.sbd file to flash drive and drag to the desktop on my MAC. It imports into Apple mail and the folders show but I can't see any messages. Checking in Finder the file contains over 2 GB of data but apparently the format is still off. I have tried several times to no avail!

We have upgraded to Windows 7 from XP, and were unaware that we should have saved our address book and old emails in a separate folder, before backing up. As it is we backed up using a Seagate Back Up Plus, assuming that everything would be simply transferred over when we downloaded it. However, our old emails and inbox etc are not in a format that we can retrieve. Is there any way of accessing this information, or have we lost it. I did see some of the files, but they are either .json or .msc and I cannot open them.I do hope someone can help as the address list would be really useful.

                              Thank you, Sarah
