I had a free email account with my previous ISP (big mistake!). I had to create a new email account elsewhere when I switched ISPs. All was good for almost two years but I just bought a new PC and have ported all my email accounts over to the new Thunderbird. It appears that everything is set up correctly but I have one annoying problem. The old email account is kept only to be able to look at old email (pre-new email account) from time to time. It is not even possible to sign into the old account but Thunderbird keeps asking for the password. Is there anyway I can stop it from doing this?

Thanks!

This just happened with a new update on only one of my two gmail accounts 128.2.3esr

I was not getting email on one account, so I deleted that one account. Now I can't add it back to TB. I get "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." Double check password and logged on with it on Edge browser, no problem.

I uninstalled / reinstalled Thunderbird with the same result.

Thank you!

Thunderbird suddenly fails to sign in using webmail username / password Oct. 1, 2024

Hi, Thunderbird was working fine in the morning, but later in the day, it suddenly stopped downloading messages from my Hotmail inbox and asked for my password again. When I entered my password, I got the following error message:

"Sending of password for user mazyarm@hotmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop-mail.outlook.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password."

Thunderbird won't sign in to check emails. I also get the message:

"Login to server pop-mail.outlook.com with username mazyarm@hotmail.com failed."

And those are the messages I now get whenever I click on the Get Messages button. However, I am still able to access my Hotmail account directly using the Firefox web browser, so I know that my username and password are not the problem.

Does anyone know what's going on? How do I solve this problem? Thank you, Maz

Microsoft are again complaining about normal password login.

Today I have updated to Version 128.2.0esr (64-bit)

I have set outgoing server to StartTLS and OAuth2 and it is fine.

When i set OAuth2 in server settings and try to retrieve mail i get "Host contacted, sending login............" and it sticks at that point with no error messages from Thunderbird or Microsoft.

If i revert to "Normal Password" it is fine.

When microsoft first complained i turned on two step authorisation and the used their option (cannot remember what it was called now) to create a login password/key for thunderbird so that it would still work for "Normal Password" setting

How do we get round Microsoft's obstacles???>

I apologize in advance for the language, I'm writing from a translator. Thunderbird on several accounts, every few days requires a password ... "login to the server failed, enter a new password". Just in case, I changed the passwords on these accounts (with the option to remember), a few days of peace and again the problem. However, logging in with the old passwords before and the new ones now on the server is no problem at all.

I reinstalled TB but unfortunately it doesn't help. The same on the stationary and laptop, what could be the problem? Currently, email is available only on the server, I do not have access to Thunderbird.

Today I changed the password on one of my gmail accounts. I edited the password in Settings in 3 places: imap, smpt and oauth. Next time I started Thunderbird I got a gmail authentication pop-up. Se first screenshot. The email address was shown correctly. When I clicked Next, I got the failure message. See second screenshot. I rebooted and tried many times with same result.

I have several other gmail accounts on this same Thunderbird client and they continue to work correctly. I know my password is correct because I can access this email account both directly on gmail and also on another computer where I set up Thunderbird just to test for this problem.

Any idea what is going on and how to fix it?

I Menu app icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information

Under 'Application Basics' - Profile Folder - click on 'Open Folder'

This opens a new window showing the contents of your current in use profile name folder.

Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.

Look for the following files and delete them.

   cert8.db - obselete file
   cert9.db - currently used file
   key3.db - obselete file
   key4.db - current used file
   logins.json - current used file
pkcs11.txt (some people report this file missing)
   secmod.db - obselete file
   session.json
   xulstore.json

See next comment before you start Thunderbird as you need to empty cache files.

Start Thunderbird

Add yahoo and make sure all the settings are correct. Make sure Authentication Method is Oauth and user name is full yahoo email address.

Report on results.

ADDITIONAL Whilst Thunderbird is closed - after you have deleted the files mentioned previously.

access : C:/Users/ User Account/Appdata/Local/Thunderbird/Profiles/ Please note this is the Appdata 'Local' location which the computer uses as a cache. Be sure you are in the 'Local' and not the 'Roaming' Delete the contents of the 'Profiles' folder.

then start Thunderbird. keep having to reset my secure key password and tried this in "Roaming" instead of "Local" Help!

I successfully changed the authentication method for my SMTP server to OAuth.

But when I try to set my IMAP server to OAuth, I get this error message:

The IMAP server imap-mail.outlook.com does not support the selected authentication method. Image attached. Note: I couldn't capture the whole image, as Firefox insisted on displaying the error message at the bottom of the screen where I could only see half of it. But I confirmed OAuth was the issue by changing it back & forth several times.

I thought we had to change both SMTP & IMAP. Did I misunderstand something?

And with the general password of password manager, I am able to view and copy passwords. For one website, I changed the password, but made an error. When I do login on that website, password manager lets appear different options with dates. See screenshot on link. These dates dont appear when I open the password manager. Now I can stil login on that website when I choose a former date of 23 avril on the list. How can I copy this password? Have a beautiful day... or night ! Xavier

I have three email accounts in Thunderbird on my Windows 10 PC which are all with Yahoo. The accounts are ex Sky accounts but are now run by Yahoo.

I am replacing that PC with a Windows 11 laptop so I need to migrate.

I exported the Thunderbird data using the export tool and when I imported the file into the new Thunderbird installation on the laptop I got three pop up messages from yahoo asking me to agree to allow access but they all related to the first of the accounts. I can send and receive from the first account but can neither send or receive from the other two accounts.

I have tried deleting the last two accounts and adding them manually but the yahoo pop up again refers to the first account.

Any suggestions?

In trying to sync my bookmarks from my old PC to my new one (Win 11), every. single. time I log in to Firefox, and enter the emailed code I receive, to which I get an on-screen conformation that I've logged in AND an emailed confirmation that I've logged in, I am instantly logged back out- the little yellow triangle shows back up on my account icon. I have tried everything i can think of: I've made sure I'm not in private browsing mode, cookies are enabled, I've forced a log out of all devices, I've closed and re-opened Firefox, I've restated my computer, I've even uninstalled and re-installed Firefox in case there was some odd glitch....all for naught. Nothing I do helps. THEN to make matters worse I get the 15 min blockout to add to my frustration, because I've tried this too many times. All I want to do I sync my bookmakers to my new device....
