I have asked this before as it has been an ongoing issue. So, for years, I know all about bypassing any antivirus and unchecking Windows Search etc etc. Safe mode is pretty much ridiculous as a concept because who in their right mind could ever operate a computer in safe mode just because a software was failing?

The only extensions I use are Google Cal and Lightening

It is now back to where Thunderbird is basically unusable. It constantly freezes and I wait anywhere from 30-60 seconds each time for it to unfreeze. It is random, but seems to happen when TB is checking incoming mail and I am trying to type an email. I waste so much time now just sitting at my desk and staring at the screen waiting and waiting.

I have a high end system, W10 with i7 3.2 Intel chip and 64G of ram. I also have massive TB profile and folders, like enormous. I have performed compression and I even recently deleted a crapload of Archive folders. But I do have hundreds and hundreds of folders and sub-folders and mail going back a long, long way chronologically.

I don't know what to do...but it is incredibly frustrating. I have been using this software for 15-20 years and I have the workflow streamlined. I dread having to attempt to use another software but TB is basically unusable for me now. It is totally inefficient to just sit there and stare at the screen waiting for it to stop puking.

Exact error message is "Login to server XXX with username YYY failed." It correctly states the server and user name.

This issue has recurred intermittently over the last couple of days, several days after the last Thunderbird update. It did not immediately start after the last update. Today it is recurring every time I try to send an email from a certain account. Receiving email is usually not affected.

I have no issues with my Yahoo account. The troubled account settings are as pictured below.

I have already gone through tech support with Bluehost. They see no errors at their end and they sent me here. But it does seem that if Thunderbird were really causing the problem, by not sending the password correctly, that should happen with all my mail servers, not just one.

I already tried deleting both the mailbox and SMTP passwords in the password manager, and then saving them afresh with a freshly set password. No difference.

Before this issue, I had not made any changes to my server settings in at least a year. Here are the outgoing server settings:

Description: <empty> Server name: box850.bluehost.com Port: 465 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Normal password

The username is irrelevant and has not been changed. It still matches my domain name at Bluehost.

I tried changing the connection security setting to STARTTLS. That automatically changed the port to 587, but it made no difference to the issue.

I added Thunderbird to my Windows firewall permissions. It's very strange that it wasn't there already! But that did not resolve the issue either -- and it shouldn't have, since I didn't remove Thunderbird from the list. I had never brought up that dialog before today.

A related page here suggested turning off various levels of Antivirus software. I use Avast Security. It doesn't seem to have any setting that would restrict outgoing emails. And if it were restricting something, the Thunderbird error message should be something more like "Unable to reach server", not a login failure message. And it should affect all email accounts that use the same settings. I have another username at the same server and I see that that account is suffering from the same issue.

Another related page suggests deleting three files from my default profile, logins.json and a DB file or two. That would seem to get rid of all kinds of stuff that shouldn't be gotten rid of. I hear this kind of advice from bank CSRs, telling me to delete all my cookies. That makes me want to blow my cookies at the CSR! They have no idea how many websites I would have to re-enter my information for if I were to delete all my cookies.

When I press Cancel in response to the "Retry / Enter new password / Cancel" message, another error message pops up:

"Sending of the message failed. Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description is available. The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) box850.bluehost.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."

Hi, Approx twice per year, T-bird, gent's, very squirrel-e, fails to log in, sometimes can't send email. And very slow dl's, & send.

Profile mgr. 'delete' all profiles showing, create new profile, good to go for 6 months or so.

It's not malware, run Bitdefender & MBAM pro resident & scan regular. In fact first showed running KIS. No signs of infection.

I've pruned my email: inbox, sent, & trash, oldest is March 1, 2020

would deleting: global-messages-db.sqlite then re-starting T-bird be helpful?????

Besides malware what can cause corruption of T-birds profile recently MOZBack failed & said corrupt profile. I then made a new profile. _________

I also experience, more than I'd like Chrome, misbehavior, requiring del default profile to correct.

I kinda know how to correct, & now looking for the cause.

Thanks Guys Rico

After a long browser session, sometimes the keyboard shortcut Alt-D stops working, but other keyboard shortcuts like Alt-H work fine.

The shortcuts F6 and Ctrl-L still work.

A restart of the browser fixes it though, so I haven't explored further.

It's not easy to replicate consistently; Firefox doesn't show it when first opened, but after prolonged use it may occur and then stay that way until restarted.

I am using Firefox version 76.0.1 (64-bit) on Ubuntu 18.04. I am not using the [German version of Firefox].

I know I can make this go away with a restart, I'm just curious if there's some troubleshooting steps I could take to identify the cause.

This bug was first observe with Windows 10, Thunderbird 78.8.0 and persists in 78.8.1. The larger picture shows the situation after trying to send the mail: uploading the large file was completed and the link shows up in the mail. And this is the first hint for a malfunction I get a warning that my mailserver might reject my mail due to size. The next, smaller picture shows that the mailserver really rejects the mail. I then tried to remove the appanded file from the mail - I could not do so...

Hi,

I used Thunderbird for a while, suddenly after restarting thunderbird appears blank. No e-mails are displayed. Most of the UI is not visible. Please see screenshot attached.

A click on the button with the three lines to go to settings does not trigger any reaction.

First workaround was to backup Profile, uninstall thunderbird, reinstall thunderbird, copy Profile to Thunderbild App-Folder (%appdata%). After a while, the same thing happened again.

I use Windows 10.

Kind regards,

I was using TB version 68.8.0, Win 10, Norton Firewall. I started having intermittent failures connecting to my server when sending emails over the last 2 weeks. Then yesterday (no identified changes in my system configuration) I stopped being able to connect to my email server. When I attempt I get the usual connecting to server message in the lower left of the screen with a green bar then followed by the error message "connection to server XXXX timed out". I therefore cannot receive or send any emails. Logging on to earthlink via my browser, I can see that I have emails and that my account is functioning perfectly.

I have reinstalled thunderbird (now version 68.8.1), verified all server settings in the server box, tried safe mode, tried turning off my Norton firewall, tried all the different authentication methods, all to the same result.

I don't know what to try next.

Hi - I've been using Linux for a few months, but a longtime Thunderbird user -version1.68.8.0+build2-Obuntu0.18.04.2. When TB asks "compact now?" I usually delay a bit until I can organize my open tabs, because they always go empty after compacting. After I get the open tabs taken care of I do the compact via right click on Inbox. Today I've been getting "ALERT The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again." Several problems, I don't know what "writing to folder failed" means. The only place I see disk space is under settings and there is no option to see or verify "enough" and I cannot find anywhere to look at/change "write privileges." I stopped Bitdefender from doing anything with TB some time ago. Maybe it's not a problem? But from reading TB info, it seems to be an important function. Thanks much. Barb

FF didn't used to be so slow. It now get really slow and uses a lot of RAM to the extend that my disk is full and I have to shutdown FF.

I do have like 30 tabs open, with one or two Slack-like web apps. However, I'm not using them all at the same time. In the first couple of quantum releases it didn't used to be this slow, never mind pre-quantum performance. Oh and I'm not gonna compare to Chrome or Chromium.

Any help with this? Is it the extensions causing it?

  • Also I never found a proper replacement to legacy Tab Session Manager (the quantum one is no where near as good).
