I copied all emails from an Old server to a New server using Thunderbird but somehow Thunderbird created duplicates. Here are the steps i did:

Thunderbird Setup Old server - setup Local Directory Thunderbird Setup New Server - setup Local Directory Switched to Offline mode, so working with all emails local copy. While in Offline, copy all emails from Old Server to New Server Switch to Online Thunderbird starts uploading all (local) New server emails to New Server End result: When in Offline mode, I have all emails in New Server (as expected) When I go into Online mode, I have all duplicates. Its seems I am then seeing all server and local copies of each email. How can I get rid of duplicates or get them to sync correctly?

I was using Thunderbird to move from an old Gmail account to a new one. The instructions said to use an add-on called Copy Folder but as I got into the process, turns out Copy Folder is no longer available. Both emails are IMAP. I manually transferred the emails. I was using labels so I wanted to keep that configuration. The labels were all created in the new gmail. SOME of the emails went and some didn't. Thunderbird is showing all the emails just fine. When I open the new gmail account, all the emails are not showing.

I have refreshed Thunderbird. How do I get the emails that it is showing to appear in the new gmail account? I don't plan to use Thunderbird going forward. I just wanted to use to move emails.

I'm not tech savvy so please help me finish this process. Thank you.

Hi there,

I have reset and reinstalled Windows on my computer. Unfortunately, I forgot to take notice of the e-mails in my account which had a color label (important, private, work etc.) attached to it. However, I do have a backup of the AppData-folder. Where is the information about the color labels stored and can I somehow restore it?

All e-mails are stored in the cloud and shown in Thunderbird with IMAP. I just need to get the color labels back.

Best Regards, Peter

Hello, all - I received the attached message when trying to install Avast Antivirus. I'm wondering if Firefox might have beeen corrupted in some way, especially because I've downloaded Avast before with no problem. I followed the suggestion and installed it via the Opera browser, but Firefox is my default and I'm concerned. Has anyone had this experience and/or know what to do about it? Thanks much in advance, as always!

My system crashed and I reinstalled TB. The address book is missing. Everything else seems ok. I just had to do signature stuff for sending. I backed up "EMAIL" from the old drive on an external hard drive but I can't find the address book files. It is there somewhere. I use GMAIL and they don't have one. I keep stuff on my C:\ drive. I am old school! Thanks, Jim

My computer hung in middle of automated installation of Thunderbird (?to 78.7?). Eventually, fed up with waiting I forced a "cold" restart, after which when I tried to run Thunderbird I got a failure message recommending me to reinstall Thunderbird. Using a browser, I found the website and selected download. Then when I try to run the download, it asks me to force a Windows restart to clear an older version, but when Windows comes back, the error message has not been cleared. I have downloaded, run and re-tried at least three, perhaps 4 times, and during these the version has gone from 78.7 to 78.8 ! How do I get out of this. You cannot email me because Thunderbird is not working! I need access to it to comminicate, and am worried that a drastic measures will loose my preserved live email (inbox and stored sub-directories) and my address-book (which gets use=referred to for nuch more than just email).

I've just copied* my Thunderbird profile from my desktop to my (only occasionally used) laptop, and everything appears to have copied just fine (i.e., all settings are there, as are all my folders of old mail, and recently received emails appear in the inbox).

But I can't connect to the mail server. The Thunderbird message is : "Could not connect to [twc server name]; the connection was refused." I know there's nothing wrong with the server because I downloaded mail to my desktop shortly before copying the profile and again shortly after getting the problem message on my laptop.

I've copied my profile in the past when I need to use my laptop (about 3-4 times per year when I travel and need current and recent emails). And it's always worked just fine before, so I'm totally confused.

Two things to mention, if they happen to be pertinent: (1) My desktop is still on W10 1909, and the laptop's on 20H2. And (2) Thunderbird was installed (by the Thunderbird installer without intervention by me) to the Program Files (x86) folder on my desktop, but to the plain Program Files folder on the laptop.

  • Again, I went through the copying steps I've always used before: (1) copying the Thunderbird folder and subfolders from the C:\users ... \roaming folder of my desktop to the roaming folder on my laptop, and (2) just copying the contents of the jibberish-named profile folder from my desktop to the different jibberish-named profile folder on my laptop.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I will have to replace my desktop soon (it fails miserably every time I try to install Windows 10 20H2), and I really need to be able to use my laptop for email until I get a new desktop up and running (and now I'm frightened I won't be able to copy my profile to the new desktop!).

Hi, I have Thunderbird installed on a PC with over 8 years of emails saved. As that PC (lets call it A) has reached the end of its life a new PC (B) has been purchased. I would like to install Thunderbird on PC B and shift the HDD from PC A which has 8 years of email on it to the new machine. While all new email gets saved on the new SSD installed on PC B.

So when done I will use Thunderbird on PC B with all new mails accessed and available from the SSD of PC B and all old emails accessible from the old HDD of PC A which is now installed within PC B.

I hope this is possible! Please guide me on how to do this.

The intention being not to either loose data from PC A or immediately fill up PC B with old data.

Thanks Gautam

Up until now, I have been very happy with Thunderbird. I have used it for many years and always accepted upgrades when offered. However, the upgrate from verison 68 to 78 has been a disaster for me. When I allowed Thunderbird to install the new version, it no longer recognized any of my previous configuration or mailboxes/folders.

I use POP servers and keep all of my email on my local disc. I have between 50 to 100 local folders, many with folders within folders. The upgrade did not find my existing login's for my email services (gmail and Comcast). It did not find any of my existing mailboxes/folders. In fact, it seemed to be a completely new installations, asking for my email services credentials. It did not find any of the many folders I have organized to hold all my old Emails. Those are kept in .MBX files with .TOC files.

How do I recover my old configuration and mail boxes? Is there a program that will convernt my old email folder structure to whatever the new Thunderbird uses? Or do I have to retrograde back to version 68 to keep my old mailboxes/folders?

I am very disappointed that no warning was given about the major changes and significant functional differences before asking to install the upgrade. This problem has cost me over a days work and much frustration. (And just so you know, I am a computer professional/programmer, so I have some idea about what I am doing.)

The notion of losing control of my fifteen email accounts is terrifying. Among other things, it is imperative for me to have use of the Manually Sort Folders add-on that I've been using for years with the whole series of versions up through 68.12.1. Attempting to rebuild fifteen email accounts with what sounds like a wildly different account creation process is basically not going to work. All of the relevant information for each of the accounts is long since tucked away in Thunderbird itself and extracting it to somehow "start over" on a wildly different system is not going to be acceptable. So the key point is this: can Thunderbird v68.12.1 (what I'm using now) be SEAMLESSLY updated to v78.8.0?!? That is, I point at the update (at my choice of timing, absolutely never permissible to allow anything to be updated at some system operator's choice of timing or even *whether* to do an update) and it proceeds and automatically results in an immediately correct and functioning Thunderbird not different other perhaps for some colors and trivial operational changes, but losing absolutely nothing of my existing structures. Can that happen or is this v78.8.0 basically a "whole new world" requiring entirely different approaches to everything?

I was using one of the older versions of Thunderbird (76) but I had to start using the latest version (86) because I needed it to sync with my work email.

I am running a debian-based Linux distribution. The older version was installed through the package manager, but the newest beta release came with the executable in the folder I downloaded. I therefore never really 'installed' it, I am just running the executable and everything is working fine.

My questions are:

1. How can I transfer my personal Thunderbird calendar from my older Thunderbird? I have other calendars elsewhere which I have already synced to the newest release, but the Thunderbird-specific calendar I was using in the older release seems to be gone. I found a folder inside the hidden .thunderbird folder called 'tvpkve6n.default-default'. Inside it, I see a folder called 'calendar-data'. I thought copying this folder to the current folder of the beta release would do the trick, but that didn't work. I also copied it to a beta folder inside the hidden .thunderbird folder, but that also did not work. Any suggestions?

2. How can I import my saved list of contacts from the older to the newest release? I couldn't find the file where my contacts are saved, and now every time I have to write an email I have to first go find that person's email, which is quite frustrating.

3. I now seem to have two instances of Thunderbird installed on my computer, which doesn't seem right. In the forum of my linux distribution, I was adviced to not run the older release again, because that might break the functioning of the newest release I am currently using. How can I 'install' the newest beta release, so every time I open, or update, Thunderbird, I will be using the newest release only?

Thanks in advance for the help!
