Force-Pinning Extension doesn't Appear to Work (GPO in Microsoft AD)

I am having the same issue as this other user here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/17wvuwh/help_pinning_extension_in_firefox_with_gpo/

Preliminaries -- Initially (before trying to force-pin), I had these GPOs enabled:

Extensions to Install -> https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/4410896/bitwarden_password_manager-2024.12.4.xpi

Prevent extensions from being disabled or removed ->

(Those GPOs above all work.)

What I'm trying to do: Force-pin Bitwarden.

I believe I've followed the documentation correctly (except for not including a "*" case): https://mozilla.github.io/policy-templates/#extensionsettings

I've enabled this GPO with this value:

Extension Management ->

{

 "{446900e4-71c2-419f-a6a7-df9c091e268b}": {
   "default_area": "navbar"
 }

}

After running various "GPUpdate"s and whatnot, the option to uncheck "Pin to toolbar" is still available to click.

I've verified in "about:policies#active" that the JSON item appears next to "ExtensionSettings" and that there are no errors listed in the "Errors" tab.

I've also verified that it appears in the correct location in the Registry.

Since another user had the same issue (Reddit link above), I figured it'd be a good idea to check in with y'all to see if we are missing something.

Thanks for your help!

We're exploring adopting a default deny policy for Firefox extensions in our enterprise. However when I tested this by creating a custom policies.json Firefox unexpectedly removed all extensions for me, including the ones I thought I had allow listed. Here is my policies.json but just keeping in the Facebook Container add-on to illustrate:

{

   "policies": {
       "ExtensionSettings": {
           "*": {
               "blocked_install_message": "Only approved Firefox extensions can be installed, please email your request to itdept@example.org",
               "installation_mode": "blocked",
               "allowed_types": ["theme", "dictionary", "locale"]
           },
           "@contain-facebook.xpi": { "installation_mode": "allowed" }
       }
   }

}

What I would like is to to allow pre-approved extensions (including if they already are installed) and all other types of add-on, but remove and prohibit installation of unapproved extensions.

Can anyone assist, please?

I just want to download the install programs until I get the most recent one that has none of (1) - (4).

I need to go back 1, 3, 5, 10 years?

So where on the Internet should I go to get such an old Firefox install program?

I used to really like Firefox, but changes (1) -- (2) have ruined it for me.

Hi,

I have 2 machines (Win10 and Win11) with FF 140.3.1esr (32-bit) installed which demonstrates the same failure when I enter one site's url:

Chrome at the same machines goes at this url w/o any failures. Any ideas what to change on "about:config" in FF to allow it opening this url w/o such error?

Hello!

Currently we deploy Firefox via SCCM Package on our machines. The problem is, that Firefox currently only updates itself when you opened it once. This leads to all sorts of Vulnerability warnings etc.

At the moment these regkey settings in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox are configured: AppAutoUpdate (REG_DWORD) 0x00000001 (1) DisableAppUpdate (REG_DWORD) 0x00000000 (0)

These two are enough for the updates, when the user opened Firefox (and created a profile).

So we tried the information detailed on this page: https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/toolkit/mozapps/update/docs/BackgroundUpdates.html

To achieve a 100% unattended update we added following Key: BackgroundAppUpdate (REG_DWORD) 0x00000001 (1) which yielded no results. Firefox stayed on his old Version (V131 for this example).

We also added pref("app.update.langpack.enabled", false) in the autoconfig.js File as kind of a 'hail mary' action (bc. the documentation wrote, that this setting should be disabled); but it still does not work.

We've been through this rabbit hole quite some times now, and researching it also yields inconclusive results. (answers like: you still need to start Firefox once, before it can update).

So, what are we missing/doing wrong? Is a true unattended Background Update even possible or is "start Firefox once to create a profile" still the only way to go?

Thanks in advance for your time & help

When I go to some websites, such as Corair.com it hangs. I cannot click on anything. If I try to access specific pages via a search engine the same happens. I can close the browser but the 8+ processes don't terminate so I have to kill them from task manager.

I clear all of my browser history when I close FF so I can't remember all of the sites this happens on, but it was more than just Corsair.com.

I'm using 140.2.0esr, but also had the problem with 140.1.0esr. I did not have this issue on 128.12.0esr (I upgrade to 140 after that).

I tried turning use hardware acceleration off/on, that didn't fix it.

I am just about to try safe mode.

Important: there is no video of this unknown video, just the sound plays. Other browser tabs are closed, only the YouTube tab is open. I use Firefox ESR, since I have Windows 7, I use the latest version of Firefox ESR. The extensions that are installed are Ublock origin and uvpn. I don't know if it could have been infected by an unknown virus? I scanned with ESET, installed Comodo, but the problem was not solved. I would really like you to sort this out. I've been tasked with removing Firefox from all Windows workstations in our enterprise environment. Our users don't have local admin, so when they install Firefox, it is installed in the user's profile.

I've just installed Firefox 143.0.1 in my own user profile for testing purposes. However, when I attempt to uninstall, either from Control Panel or by running %localappdata%\Mozilla Firefox\uninstall\helper.exe manually, UAC prompts for elevation, even though I installed without elevating.

Is this a known issue? If yes, is there a workaround?

Thanks!

We are currently rolling out a profile management solution based on Ivanti User Environment Manager. In order to configure file includes and excludes in the profile management tool, we have to “standardize” the Firefox profile path in the filesystem. We have implemented a PowerShell script, which reads the currently used profile from %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\install.ini, renames the appropriate profile subfolder to “firefox.default-esr” and replaces the entries in installs.ini and profiles.ini.

The script seems to be reliable. However, for around 10% of the users, we are seeing issues when the user launches Firefox after the “firefox profile migration” happened. Firefox opens but none of the GUI controls is accessible. Firefox is completely unusable. See screenshot attached.

We do have workarounds to resolve this issue, such as completely wiping the %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox folder and let Firefox re-build everything from scratch. But we are still trying to find the root cause the issue, because our customers have more than 100k clients, what will be a big impact and hard to handle for the helpdesk.

We are currently unable to reproduce the issue on test clients. Even copied Firefox profile folders form affected clients don’t show the issue on other clients.

Therefore we want to find out and ask for your help:

- Is there a supported way to “standardize” the filesystem folder name of the Mozilla Firefox (ESR) profile of a user? - What are the files within a Firefox profile that are required for the profile and the application itself to properly start? - Do you have any idea which files in a Firefox profile (in a corrupted state) could cause our issue?

I have a lot of Firefox windows and tabs open, and I really don't want to lose my session.

I wanted to open a webpage in Firefox in fullscreen mode. But evidently there's some kind of serious flaw in Firefox that makes it incapable of opening webpages in fullscreen mode. Everyone says the only workaround is to open the webpage in kiosk mode. So I tried it.

But now I have two big problems:

1. One of my Firefox windows, with all its tabs, is stuck in kiosk mode. (Even if I close the window and then restore it with Ctrl+Shift+T, it's still in kiosk mode.)

2. All new Firefox windows I open with Ctrl+N are also stuck in kiosk mode.

I don't know what to do, and I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Recently we've began installing Firefox 140.2.0esr to our environment via the .msi file that Mozilla provides, however we're running in to a very odd incident.

After approximately 24 hours from installing Firefox esr to devices, it appears that the application is "updating" to 141.0.3 on the "release" channel. As far as I'm aware, this shouldn't be possible to begin with. But we've applied these settings via GPO:

Computer Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Mozilla > Firefox Application Autoupdate = Disabled Pin updates to a specific version = Enabled = Set to 140.2.0 Background updater = Disabled Disable Update = Enabled Manual Update Only = Enabled

After applying the GPO, confirmed this appears within the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\ AppAutoUpdate = 0 AppUpdatePin = 140.2.0 BackgroundAppUpdate = 0 DisableAppUpdate = 1 ManualAppUpdateOnly = 1

At this point, I'm at a loss. We cannot have rapid release be what's installed in our environment. Is there something broken with 140.2.0 or are we doing something wrong here?

Using group policy there is various settings required for our users. We have been using the preferences policy located at: Administrative Templates > Mozilla > Firefox > Preferences

This policy requires the use of JSON, we have been using the following which has been working ok:

{ "media.navigator.permission.disabled": { "Value": true, "Status": "user" }, "browser.warnOnQuit": { "Value": true, "Status": "user" }, "keyword.enabled": { "Value": false, "Status": "user" }, "browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory": { "Value": false, "Status": "user" }, }

Within the old "Preferences (Deprecated)" there is a setting called "intl.accept_languages" which we are wanting to use but I can't seem to find a way to include this within the JSON. We are wanting to set it to "en-GB".

If I enable this within the old deprecated preferences section it causes the Preferences with the JSON to stop working.

I have tried various combinations of including it within the JSON but neither are working:

"intl.accept_languages": { "Value": en-GB, "Status": "user" }

"intl.accept.languages": { "Value": en-GB, "Status": "user" }

I've checked the Mozilla website here: https://mozilla.github.io/policy-templates/ There doesn't seem to be any reference for the intl.accept_languages setting to be used within the JSON

Please can someone advise?

Hello,

We are trying to automate updating Firefox ESR from 32bit to 64bit. There seems to be an issue with getting user's profiles to properly migrate for ESR. If we do a plain 32bit uninstall and 64bit installation, a new "default-esr-1" profile gets created (which is expected behavior from these Mozilla docs for new installs). But, when we set the MOZ_LEGACY_PROFILES=1 policy, this reverts to using the "default" profile instead of "default-esr" profile that was previously in use.

Are there any known ways around this which does not require user intervention to manually change back to the "default-esr" profile?

Thank you

Hello,

New subscriber here. I have been given the task to test the install and uninstall of the Purview Firefox browser extension using Intune. I created 2 groups in EntraID, one for each (install and uninstall).

I have no issues with the installation. Initially, I left the test device in the install group and then added it to the uninstall group to remove it. (this usually works with other apps, it worked this way with the Purview Chrome browsing extension as well other apps) but when I do this, nothing happens.

Next, I removed the device from the install group and added it to the uninstall group only. Once the configuration profile applies to the test device, it allows the user to remove it manually (before it did not) but the extension remains installed.

I have created a policy using the administrative template extension uninstall option as well as with the OMA-URI settings but the same happens. When i check the device configuration for the device in Intune, it says it succeeded but that is not the case. The OMA-URI setting I was not too sure about, but gave it a shot. I used the UUID value for the Purview Firefox extension

I am attaching some pictures and hope someone can tell me what I am doing wrong. I can add additional information, if needed. I have opened a ticket with Microsoft last week but have not called me yet. I ran into this forum today.

Thanks in advance
