I've been a TB user for 10+ years and been using POP with two GMail accounts. I have my TB set-up such that eMAIL is downloaded to my laptop and then sorted into LOCAL Folders by using Message Filters. Everything works.

I now have a desktop as well as my laptop. I've been told that it would be a much better idea to switch to IMAP for both machines (I use TB on both). If I do, I have a few questions:

  1. Numbered list item Can I still copy from my "Inbox" to a set of Local Folders and use Message Filters to sort my eMAIL by sender?
  2. Numbered list item Can I use a "unified" Inbox on each machine, as opposed to having two different Inboxes for my two GMail accounts?
  3. Numbered list item Is there a guide for new IMAP users as to how to set this up?

TIA

I have made 3 attempts to add a thunderbird account to receive email from an old verizon.net account server. All have failed.

All three times, I got the message.

"Unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration"

which is a remarkably ambiguous error message. It takes about 10 minutes for that message to appear.

I am able to log directly/independently into what I understand is the verizon server. But obviously I am doing something wrong.

Independently, I successfully added a thunderbird account for an outlook.com.

I will skip the verizon account for the time being. I have one other account to move the Thunderbird.

I successfully moved all three to Mac mail a few weeks ago, only to discover that I really don't like it for a variety of reasons, the most significant for me was that

     - I learned about IMAP
     - I couldn't delete messages, although IMAP on a mac creates the

illusion that I could.

There is nothing quite like seeing messages that I know have deleted, reappear marked as unread, right before my eyes.

Thoughts anyone?

Moving messages and repairing folders in Thunderbird

For some time I have been having problems with moving or copying messages between folders in TB - I am on the esr channel and have just moved from 128.12 to 140.1 but nothing changed until I saw in a post on this forum that repairing the folder could make a difference. I have tried the repair folder option and it mostly works but not always - for example I couldn't copy or move messages from a sub-folder on one email account to a sub-sub-folder on another. It finally worked when I moved the messages to the folder above the one I wanted, and then moved them down, which was very time-consuming. And now it is once more refusing to copy a single message to a folder on another account.

Something that may not be helping is the fact that I am trying to copy messages to a new account, which has weirdly placed itself right at the bottom of the navigation list, below Local Folders and a news-server.

All the messages seem present and correct on my mailserver, where the recalcitrant folder is neatly in its alphabetical order.

Does TB just get bored? Does its memory clog up? Should I clear 'recent history' (whatever that is?)

Hoping someone can shed some light on what has been a very frustrating process of trial and error.

Kate

And PS when will we see 'Manually Move Folders' in the esr channel? I am now on 140 and thought that would have it...

My overall intent is to get old emails that are in my Bluehost domain host into a Workspace/Gmail account. From what I've been able to learn, Workspace/Gmail will only allow importing from either Outlook or another Gmail account. So I exported the emails at Bluehost into a cur.tar folder, saved to my computer, and I created a new Gmail account devoted solely to these emails. Thunderbird is apparently required to get the emails imported from the cur.tar file into the new Gmail account.

And that's where I'm stuck. I used the Tbird Import tool, chose 'Import from a File' > 'Import Backed-up Profile' > 'Choose zip file', and the cur.tar zip file is greyed out. I tried expanding that zip file, and it won't allow selecting anything in it.

What am I doing wrong here? Is there a less complicated way to get old emails from Bluehost into Workspace/Gmail?

As per the subject - all of a sudden in my replies, I see machine language above the text of the original email I am replying to?

I have checked and unchecked Message Body options - but the machine language remains in the reply.

That machine language is not seen by the reply recipient, but is distracting to me as I type that reply above the original message

Note too that my reply is in 'normal' text above the machine language of the original message - so I can send normally

Hi all, I have a client who uses Thunderbird and wants to close his orange.fr email address, but has thousands of emails he needs to be able to continue to refer to / archive. I advised to move all the emails from the IMAP server/inbox folder, to a Local folder in Thunderbird. Having done this, I tried to remove the account, did NOT check the box “Remove Message Data” and (wrongly assumed) there would still be a way for him to see his orange.fr emails in a local folder somewhere, but they all disappeared. I’ve tried to trace the path for the local folder but can’t see a way to see them once the account is removed. Can any suggest the best way to GUARANTEE that he can close his orange.fr email account and still retain his old emails? I’m guessing that if he closes the account but doesn’t remove it from Thunderbird, the account will retain the local folders but will be unable to connect to the orange.fr email address. I suppose that would be a solution but I’m guessing Thunderbird will throw a connection error every time it opens? is there a neater way? We would prefer to avoid trying to export them to another mail client.

Any suggestions / advice greatfully received. I’m just nervous that he doesn’t lose access to his old emails after closing his orange.fr email account. TIA Russ

Hi Everybody,

I am trying to move some eMails from the inbox to one specific Storage Folder. I seem to be able to move messages to any Storage Folder I want, except for this one, single Storage Folder.

There must be something in that Storage Folder settings that deny a move. What could it be?

This happens only on my default account.

What can I do to get the email opened in a new tab as a default? See the attached context menus

At one time my Thunderbird account had a button at the top that said Tools. I could go in there and hit something like "delete all emails marked as spam" and all emails with a red mark would be deleted. That button is no longer there. I have over 4000 emails, most of which are tagged to delete, but I can't figure out how to delete them all at once, and I don't have time to delete them individually. Help please!

Is compacting Maildir folders necessary?

I'm trying to better understand how Thunderbird communicates that messages are deleted to the servers of the respective email accounts configured as IMAP. Specifically, … (read more)

I'm trying to better understand how Thunderbird communicates that messages are deleted to the servers of the respective email accounts configured as IMAP. Specifically, it seems that when moving a message from an IMAP folder, such as an Inbox, to a folder of a different email account or a Local Folder, the message disappears from Thunderbird but doesn't immediately get deleted from the server (I am checking by logging in through a browser to the email's web interface). Depending on the email provider, it may be marked or flagged as "deleted" or in some cases it just remains in the inbox (in outlook's web interface, for example, I can't tell if a message has been marked as deleted or not). Only later, after right-clicking on the respective inbox in Thunderbird and choosing "Compact" it deletes the message from the server.

I'm a bit confused now: All of my accounts are using maildir (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/maildir-thunderbird) as storage format, which I selected prior to adding any account. According to the information here (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders), "Compact does not apply to accounts using the maildir storage format". So for maildir accounts, why do I have a "compact" option at all and how come it doesn't delete messages immediately? Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding either what compact means or maildir or (probably) both? Is there a way to have Thunderbird simply delete (not just "mark as deleted") moved messages instantly?

I was under the impression that since maildir stores essentially one file per email message, that it would function like file management on a computer, so when moving a message from folder A to folder B the file/message would disappear from folder A, not that it would keep a copy "marked as deleted" in folder A. If anybody could explain this I would be most grateful.
