This is not a practical question (I'm sorry). I'd just like to understand.

A few years ago, it was necessary to install a plugin in order to playback a video (for instance the VLC-web-plugin). Nowadays, plugins are not necessary. You can just assign an application such as VLC player to a specific file type (In Firefox -> Options -> General -> Applications you can choose which file type is opened with which application). But whats the technical difference between VLC installed on operating system level and VLC as a web-plugin of Firefox? Both are external programs (locally installed) started from within the browser.

I know, that it is the goal of web2.0 to get rid of the plugins, as they are security risks and not user-friendly. However, what is the difference if I can assign an external program to render the file? Is it maybe, that only the plugins such as flash and shockwave can change the html-code on the client side and make the website interactive (and more insecure)?

After updating to Firefox 77.0, it no longer store my cookies between sessions.

I have made sure the "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" is UN-clicked.

I tried deleting the cookies.sqlite file and replace it with an archived cookie.txt file, but Firefox 77.0 no longer converts cookies.txt to cookies.sqlite.

I then tried backing up the cookies.sqlite file after a Firefox session spent signing into various accounts, but it too seems to get cleared out.

On 77.0.

Noticed that after last update, opening a new tab with audio on the previous tab (such as a YouTube video playing) causes the audio to pause/stutter each time a new tab is opened.

No other changes to this system, and good amount of resources available in each test. Would be great if someone could quickly repro. (I am not discounting a machine-specific cause yet.)

I don't like the megabar, and I have looked around to see if there are any fixes for the most recent Firefox 77 update that forces that user to have it (like at least one other update, it just assumes that people like it). I have tried using the userChrome.css file, but that didn't work. I have also tried going into about:config, which also didn't work. Is there any possible way to say 'I never want to see this megabar again in my life'? Or a way to tell the devs that it should NOT be a default option on new updates? Or a way to turn it off that will always be around, unlike the about:config deal? Any help would be great. I attached an image of the megabar.

NOTE: I'm posting this from a different machine to the one which has the problem because, well, I can't run Firefox any more :-D

Hello,

The latest beta channel version (installed on 2nd June 2020 at 16:00 UTC+2) of Firefox for x86-64bit Linux now requires GLIBC 2.18 (for libxul.so it says). This was not the case a couple of weeks ago when I last updated the Linux machine's Firefox.

Unfortunately, the highest version of GLIBC available on Redhat Enterprise Linux 7, through the usual yum channel for our servers, is GLIBC 2.17.

Anyone else stumble upon this? Any solutions (except upgrading to RHEL 8 ;-) )? At worst, I could downgrade Firefox to a previous beta or stable version.

Sorry for the probably noob-ish question. Error message when trying to run firefox:

XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/local/firefox/libxul.so: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.18' not found (required by /usr/local/firefox/libxul.so) Couldn't load XPCOM.

Hi

For some reason, Firefox changes the order of bookmarks in the adress field. For instance, when I type "yout" to search among my youtube bookmarks, the most recents aren't the first ones suggested. I've noticed this 2-3 weeks ago and I still don't understand why that is. Does anyone know?

Firefox preventing computer from sleeping - powercfg showing audio playing when no audio playing

Hello,

I love Firefox. Thanks for making it and please keep up the good work. I used Firefox for years, switched to Chrome for about 10 and have now come back to Firefox again. Love the browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory config option. This was crucial to me returning to Firefox and I suggest you make this the default.

Anyway...

The issue I'm writing this for is that Firefox seems to be preventing my computer from sleeping. When I run

powercfg /requests

from a command prompt run as administrator, I get the following info: SYSTEM: [DRIVER] Realtek High Definition Audio (HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0255&SUBSYS_10251259&REV_1000\5&26841d0a&0&00) An audio stream is currently in use. [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume9\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

This seems to show Firefox running audio that is preventing the computer from sleeping. However, none of the tabs are currently playing any audio. Thought I'd report the issue here.
