Filters *unreliably* sort the mail into their target files. I have reconstructed the filters from scratch twice, both times with identical, unpredictable results: each filter works properly on the inbox when tested, but each filter only works *sometimes* in the normal course of getting (IMAP) and sorting mail. When getting a batch of mail, some messages are sorted, while others are not. When testing the same filters on the same (still unsorted but already picked up) messages, those same messages are recognized and sorted correctly. The question is: Why are the filters not working reliably during message pickup?

The mail server is running "Debian stable" Dovecot. It seems to work well; I'm not *missing* any messages, but they're not always getting into the right folders. Instead, some messages, and sometimes quite a few messages, may remain in the inbox. I surmise that the problem is in Thunderbird, where somehow the downloading process somehow undermines the sorting process. A queuing issue? A communications-with-Dovecot issue? (The server is in Paris and I'm in North America, but there doesn't seem to be any undue latency that I can detect. The server is not very busy, that's for sure.)

In case it helps: I filter mostly on `DKIM-Signature`, `Authentication-Results`, and `Received` header entries. In a couple of cases, I use `Body`. I'm almost always using "match any" (as opposed to "match all").

I've always experience occasional TB crashes. According to my log history there was 1 in July, 3 in Aug, 2 in Sep, 2 in Oct, and 6 in Nov. I never really paid attention since the reboot was quick. But now in December I am losing work and it is a major problem. I've had 30 crashes in Dec and 21 in the past week. I have only 3 add ons and they have not changed, and a Copernic connector. I disable the Copernic connector and it didn't help. I have the same 140.6 on my Surface Go with the same add ons, except for Copernic and it runs fine. On both PCs I use Malewarebytes and WinDef. I have put exclusions for them in their setups. Even with MBAM completely disabled I've still had crashes.

I cleared the Cache and no help. I've even had occasional crashes in Troubleshooting mode. Here are my last 5 crash IDs

bp-070bf941-4e8b-41a3-8b84-3e3440251224 bp-a936f7c2-9ee3-4c38-b304-dab830251224 bp-8be9cf9e-8f2f-49bb-95cf-47e780251224 bp-12f8fc2c-c505-40f0-8c67-44b730251224 bp-9013fb78-086c-4327-9de8-62db30251223

Interestingly I’m also experiencing crashes with Firefox, especially ChatGPT. I cleared the ChatGPT history and that helped but did not solve the problem. I cleared the Firefox cache and in troubleshoot mode still have issues.

Otherwise my win11 PC seems to be working fine. I’ve run chkdsk and all is ok. Also scannow is ok.

Is my next step a profile rebuild?

Hello! I want to set up TBird to: 1) Get all my messages and attachments stored locally, and... 2) Remove *most* of the above from gmail's server to avoid the data limit, but... 3) Keep, perhaps some months or a year of activity on gmail's server so I can access recent items from wherever.

Questions: 1) I have 10s of thousands (more?) of msgs, many with attachments. Is it better to just set up TBIrd and let it grab all the messages, or start by using Google TakeOut? 2) I presume I use IMAP vs. POP? 3) To preserve messages on my harddrive, I could archive to a local folder. Then I could safely delete those same messages on the gmail web interface? 4) If this turns into a disaster, can I just remove the entire account from TBird without suffering a loss of my entire email history? 5) Any insurance maneuvers to prevent the disaster of accidentally losing my entire email history while attempting to set this up? (Obviously will need to be religious about backing up my own system, though keeping a year of email on the gmail server offers a bit of insurance once the set up is successful.)

I am really hoping to avoid creating a unholy mess of my email/spending a week trying to fix it. (Indeed, I have avoided this project for years for this reason, but I really, really want to do this.)

I tried unticking enable and it did NOT work. Help! I want the stupid filter gone. I have struggled for two years with the junk filter which does not work right. I have done shift J. The filter does NOT learn. A week aog, I saw that I could uncheck enable and that was supposed to stop the filter. That also did NOT work.

Today, an email I forwarded to myself from another platform went in junk. I never wanted any junk filter. It has been nothing but trouble and now I can't even disable it.

My question is, whether or not the android Thunderbird will interact with the windows Thunderbird I have on my laptop. On my laptop, I have Thunderbird redirect emails into various folders. On my cellphone, I'm currently using Fairemail but it's not aware of those folders on my laptop which is a problem when doing a search on my cell for a specific email, if the email I'm looking for has migrated to those folders on the laptop. Hi, I’m using Thunderbird with a Yahoo Mail account and I’m seeing two Draft folders in the left pane:

Drafts Draft

Their IMAP locations are different: imap://…/Drafts imap://…/Draft

Thunderbird only saves drafts into the Drafts folder (plural). The Draft folder stays empty, but it always shows up.

What I tried so far: • Account settings → Subscribe Unchecked “Draft” there, but it doesn’t save. After reopening Subscribe, it’s checked again and the folder is still visible. • Restarted Thunderbird multiple times. • Server Settings → disabled “Show only subscribed folders”. • Checked folder Properties, but there are no options to hide it or control visibility, so it looks hard locked by Yahoo.

Conclusion so far: Yahoo seems to force both system folders via IMAP and ignores unsubscribe, so Thunderbird can’t hide or remove “Draft”.

Is there any supported way in Thunderbird to permanently hide or ignore the extra Draft folder for Yahoo accounts, or is this a known Yahoo IMAP limitation?

Thanks

Thunderbird for gmail archiving - All Mail help please

Hi, Forums - I am a new Thunderbird user based on on-line research suggesting Thunderbird as the best way to relieve gmail account with local mailbox archiving. My gmail is out of storage by end of the month and my plan was to move a bunch of old messages into local Thunderbird mailbox to clear room in the google account. I have set up Thunderbird successfully with gmail using IMAP connectivity option. Thunderbird shows same folder structure as labels in gmail and displays all messages from the oldest to newest. So then I tried the "archiving" by setting up a folder structure under Thunderbird's Local Folders. Specifically, to start with I I set up Inbox_archive and Sent_archive and used right click Move To > Local Folders > Folder name to move old messages from live ...@gmail.com tree to Local Folder tree. Since there is also an option Copy To, my understanding was that Move should be different from Copy by also removing messages from gmail and move them to Local folders. At a first glance these steps seemed to work. I see unique old messages in Thuderbird Local Folders. I don't see these messages in Thunderbird's gmail inbox/sent and I also don't see these messages when I search in on-line gmail in:inbox and in:sent. I noticed, however, that google storage size didn't budge. I moved a thousand of more messages in the same way (thinking maybe older messages were just small) and the storage still didn't decrease. I then looked around in on-line gmail and found the messages that I presumed "archived" still sitting in gmail's All Mail. This explains why the storage size didn't change. I searched on the forum and on-line and can't get a confident answer on what am I missing to actually remove the messages from gmail - ideally in the most straightforward manner in one action as a cut and paste from on-line to local folders. Are there any IMAP/account settings that I should have so that Thunderbird's "Move to" actually removes messages from on-line account? Or is there a different archiving command/strategy I need to use?

I am hesitant to do any more trial and error on my own since I already messed up my gmail by having now thousands of messages still sitting in All Mail without proper Inbox and Sent tags and, thus, would appreciate the recommendation from someone who is familiar with my use case.

Thank you.

Spectrum, computer died, nobody competent here to get past "Registry Error," I guess, but I need all the data, contacts, calendar, etc., in the T'bird I've relied on for MANY years. PLEASE help. Am I doing something wrong?

I have one account in Thunderbird that pop's emails from a Yahoo account. If I delete a message in Thunderbird it goes to a local trash bin and on default stays there forever.

I want the emails to be deleted after 40 days in the trash bin. See picture. But it looks like it works exactly like it's described.

Messages are deleted from the trash when it's 40 days after they were originally send. If I delete a message in the inbox older than 40 days it goes to the trash and is immediately deleted from it.

I tried deleting several messages older than 40 days.

The counter of the trash increases for a split second with 1. If I look in the trash the deleted message is not there.

In my trash there are only messages "younger" than 40 days. At this moment the oldest is from December, 14 2025

Yes it works like the retention policy tells it should work. But this different from what I expect from trash folders

Hello everyone,

I am using Thunderbird with a work email account that is based on Gmail (IMAP).

My question is: How can I make sure that I will still have access to my emails in Thunderbird if my company deletes the Gmail account in the future?

Specifically: 1. Which Thunderbird settings ensure that emails are fully stored locally? 2. Is “offline use” of folders sufficient, or are there additional steps I should take? 3. Are there any caveats with Gmail/IMAP I should be aware of?

Thanks a lot for your help!
