I'm trying to change the background to the actual mozilla start page itself Ive got a nice add-on for the tab pages and background themes are easy to change the tool bar at top/bottom but we are somehow left with this dreary standard fire-fox background on start screen

I tried a full skin pack, in themes from lava, but it was so slow I uninstalled it

Is the main start screen changeable? Thanks for any help, I cant find any posts anywhere that specifically deal with this

By Mozilla start page do you mean about:home?

You can change that to any page by going to the menu The image "new fx menu" does not exist. > Options > General > Home Page
