Why do you keep pissing me off with updates that disrupt my browser workspace and hide tools I use while I'm trying to make headway on an important project?

First, everything was moved around. Ok, fine, I'm used to that kind of run around now from Mozilla. But I also have an IP address add-on that takes up a lot of horizontal space, and I want it at the bottom of my window, not crowding the top. I have another IP-related add-on which takes up more space, but now I can't even find a way to display it anymore. I'll figure it out eventually, but I use these all the time and it wasn't part of my plan today to figure out where you hid it or spend time setting up yet another add-on that restores the previous firefox version arrangement of things or creates a fake toolbar that mimics the old one. You are disrespecting your customers and wasting my time. You're only popular because people use your browser. Just because it's free doesn't mean you should do whatever you want and expect people to jump. And now you're pushing updates automatically so I can't even defer until I have time to deal with the inevitable post-upgrade difficulty I will have.

I tend to agree that Firefox should give warning and notice of these sort of major changes, before rather than after the change. I will tag this thread as escalate let's see if we can get someone from Development and UX commenting on why we do not do that, and whether we can learn and do something better next time.

When Firefox changed over to Rapid Releases there was a lot of problems with addons initially, but that was eventually resolved.

What are all these problem addons ? You did not include full troubleshooting information so there is a list of your Plugins but not of your extension. Could I ask you to paste the information from the troubleshooting information page into your next post.

Are these addons ones that are hosted on the official Fireox addon site or did you get them elsewhere ?

<rant>
Personally I would be all for Mozilla Firefox promoting Firefox Beta Channel more

  • The more there are willing to try this out, even if only as a part time additional browser, the more likely problems will be found.
  • More Beta uses, means much better chance of more addons being tested.
Let's not forget it always has a safe and secure downgrade option if any problems arise:
    Downgrade to the Release.
(At one time there was an attempt to have channel switching from the UI)
  • Firefox reputation is damaged and costly development time expended because
    1. Some addons fail or otherwise have problems with new Releases.
    2. A large proportion of Releases require Chemspill point releases

What's great about Firefox is that it is that is offers the ability to customize the layout and user experience. The default layout has changed and there is pride in the new design. However, if you would like to restore the previous look try https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../classicthemerestorer/

We can most certainly troubleshoot the add on issues, and we look forward to your reply.

I was very upset yesterday. This just caught me at a really bad time. Later in the day I needed one of my IP address plugins and it wasn't available. I could still get the info, it just wasn't right at hand as I'm used to.

I have a plugin ShowIP 2.2 which gives me IP info about the page I'm viewing. It takes up a lot of horizontal space, and worked very nicely in my add-on bar docked to the bottom of the window. Now it's stuck at the top with everything else. It's just much less preferable for me.

Another plugin, ShowMyIP 0.8, shows my own IP in the same way and location for easy reference. That one I can't get to function at all anymore. The browser doesn't say it's incompatible, but it doesn't offer me a button in the Customize UI to place anywhere.

Neither of these are indicated as needed an update. Both of them came from the FF add-on search, albeit a while ago.

Incidentally, I have FF set to warn me before applying updates, and I don't think it did. And it didn't warn me that those plugins would break. In fact, they aren't broken or disabled, I just can't place where I want them or can't open them. I'll set FF now to only update when I give permission.

Sure, I can use the theme restorer, thank you, but that's not the point. The point is that my software shouldn't disrupt my work unnecessarily, or make me jump through a lot of hoops. It seems reasonable that the browser would let me have a custom toolbar and let me dock it wherever I want in the chrome. I was okay when an earlier update just hid the toolbar and I had to re-enable it. I'm sure I'm just the edge case, but that doesn't make it any less of a pain for me personally.

Thanks for following up.

Hi Patrick,

Someone marked this as solved, I have unmarked the solution as you obviously still have problems.

I was also hoping someone from Development or UX may drop by and comment on why Firefox upgrades and only after that explains the changes. It seems more sensible to explain the changes at least briefly prior to the upgrade.

There appear to be many addons of a similar nature available on the addon site. I get 247 hits for addons suposedly wt=rking with Windows & Fx30 having IP in the name https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=ip&appver=30.0a2&platform=windows

As a workaround that may help note it is quick and easy to look up your IP address online e.g

I may have hoped those would all be fully functional with Fx29. maybe that is not the case.

You will need someone with a lot of time or who knows about the addons to say which would be sensible options now. Again maybe we will get some comment from Addons staff explaining what happened with the addons on updating to Firefox 29. Hopefully someone will follow up further on this.

I'm sure I can find replacement add-ons. I will look for those, thanks. I probably don't need help with my existing plugins. As I said, I was just in a bind on that day and happened to be impacted. Yesterday this site wouldn't let me post more than one message or a message in excess of 10,000 characters, so I couldn't post the FF info requested. Here is as much as I can post today. I might have to post the rest tomorrow.

Hi, I have also tried the classic theme restorer and the ShowMyIP 0.8. In the View menu under Toolbars > Customize... this took me to the customize Australis menu. However the IP shows on the bottom right, the icon is no longer there. In the add ons page you can apply automatic updates though.

Neither of these are indicated as needing an update, however you make a good point for not being able to move the add ons to where you want them. I also found an add on toolbar add on. The add on bar restored is the name. That should add a toolbar in the place you want to add the add ons back.
