After the upgrade to 29.0, my address bar seems to be overlaid with lots of icons - I'd include a screen shot with this question, but I don't see a way to do that.

I'll wait a bit before downgrading to 28.0

Wow, that's really strange.

Please try the Safe Mode test.

Also, if you were using a custom theme for Firefox 28, could you disable it on the Add-ons page? Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • 3-bar menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Appearance and make sure you have the default theme enabled.

Sorry, you have to reply to yourself to add a screen shot.

During the upgrade, Firefox moves all the items from the Add-on Bar to the main toolbar. If you want to remove some of those, you can use the Customize feature. This article has the details: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

But if you mean the buttons and boxes are literally overlapping, hmm, I think the screen shot might be useful.

Also, in case one of your extensions is involved, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled (Flash and other plugins still run)

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

hate to bail on you now, but I am dog tired and will have to wait until tomorrow evening to try the safe mode test ... sorry. I appreciate your attention.

I have the same issue, and I have also lost several buttons (notably refresh) - and the status bar at the bottom - I want that back and cannot find a way to get it. Loads of the buttons I USED to have seem to have gone, and the address bar is tiny and annoying. I would like it to look like it used to - it seems to be pretending to be Chrome, too, and I HATE it. If I can't get it to look as it used to, I shall be looking for another browser...

I had the same problem. Safe mode fixed it so started turning off individual suspect plugins.

My problem was:

  • RSS Icon 1.0.6, By kitsuneymg

It added a RSS icon in the address bar.

Disabled and all is working ok now.

Hi rlango, another user mentioned that one yesterday in this thread: Address bar changes to wingdings type font. Some alternatives for RSS icons were mentioned at the end if you're shopping for another one.

Hi fuzzbucket, to reconstruct the Firefox 28 look in Firefox 29, you will need a new extension. There's a discussion and link to it in this article: How to make the new Firefox look like the old Firefox. If you have specific question about how to get Classic Theme Restorer to do what you want, or if you have additional questions about things it doesn't address, please feel free to start a new question so we can keep this one focused on the address bar font/characters issue.

I did, and believe me, I will start a new thread when I have time.... :( Or just switch to another browser.
