Thanks Airmail but my question still stands as I posted itl how do move all junk mail from inbox to junk folder automatically instead of having to right click, Move The link is all about the junkmail SETTINGS, which I have read and used, but with subscriptions to over 75 mailing lists and other things i get a huge amount of JUNK and SPAM, Most of which is flagged JUNK in the inbox but I still have to MOVE most of it to the Junk folder.. by right clicking,, there has to be a better way,

If you read the article in full you would see point number nine states:

9.Make sure that the checkbox for "Move junk messages to" is checked, unless you want junk mail kept in your Inbox. (Junk folder normally will not appear alongside your other mail folders until you mark your first message as Junk.)

RE:9.Make sure that the checkbox for "Move junk messages

Yup that is checked and it works fine..

It is the Messages that are flagged when they come in when you first open Thunderbird that are marked as JUNK by Thunderbird that you have to go through the list and right click each and every one.

The messages I mark as Junk are moved as soon as I click the Junk button.

I really miss the move to JUNK button that used to be in the lower bar. I added a Image that explains it well https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2014-04-26-22-36-49-02d8cd.png

I changed Anti virus program several years ago and suddenly it started working for me. But Microsoft Security essentials was junk.

Also have you tried right clicking where you complain the button was removed and customizing that toolbar with the buttons you want.

Has this discussion dried up? I was hoping something useful would appear since I also have the same problem with junk mail that stays in my inbox, including junk mail from "mail.ru". It has to be removed by hand, one at a time.

What else do you expect to be added. The directions are linked above. The OP was not able to comprehend them though.

"What else do you expect to be added"

Well, perhaps something perhaps a little more up-to-date. Various remarks suggest that the linked spam tools are either old and/or unsupported. Most of the tools reference identifying & tagging junk - which is not the problem. Thunderbird is able to identify junk OK, but it doesn't remove junk from "mail.ru", for example. So all clearly-marked junk from "mail.ru" has to be manually removed.

All the work of spotting the junk and tagging it is being done correctly by Thunderbird. It stubbornly resists being removed, however. It must be removed manually, which is extremely tedious.

Perhaps you don't understand the problem? Would a screen capture help you to visualize the problem?

what about compacting your junk folder? or deleting it's contents.

that is right click the junk folder and select "Empty Junk" then right click again and select compact.

But I am just quoting from that old information that you so despise, stuff already linked to in this thread. Linked to because it is as relevant today as it was in version 1.

"compacting your junk folder?"

What's that got to do with the Junk flag? It makes no difference if the Junk folder is empty or not. Compacting the junk folder has nothing to do with removing junk mail. You're off on a bit of a tangent.

I hope not. and thanks Airmail >> condensation is helpful RE:>>What else do you expect to be added. The directions are linked above. The OP was not able to comprehend them though.

My issue, I think, is beyond the ability of Thunderbird in it's current state. I research things, for people, businesses, corporations, city's, and county's, Hence I subscribe to a lot of services, groups, associations, lists, and many other things. There for I receive a LOT of mail each hour, I use Thunderbird as it has been the most advanced tool available. I love it for the ability it has to sort, However it is the hundreds and hundreds of spammers that send the Viruses that concern me. I have been violated by more than one Email virus by just right clicking them to del or mark them as spam.

Example. a email comes in with a attachment, Now at present the best I have been able to do is highlight any other email and then right click the email with the attachment and del it. However this is not SAFE.. Also more than once this action has infected my computer.. Now for those of you that think this is not possible..

Here is what you do to prove it. Go find SysinternalsSuite and run the procman tools, go find nirsoft and run the internal and system tools, and finally go get ERUNT and run it before you open Thunderbird and save the registry to a file. Then rerun ERUNT after you close Thunderbird and unplug the cat5 from the router. save to a file then use file compare from the tools listed above. It may take many many attempts to find a virus that came in with a email. But it only takes one to cause you severe problems. Of the other tools OpenedFilesView, MyEventViewer, FolderChangesView, LastActivityView, OpenedFilesView. and 12 others all added to a AUTOIT program so One click sorts everything and tells me if anything is amiss with my 4 computers.

All this because I lost a button. However I learned a lot and my computers are a lot safer. What I don't understand is why Countries and Corporations do not use a program Like I put together to protect their computers from outside attacks, but rely on updates from some protection software. why not catch them immediately and remove the registry entries and folders they added/modified.

No not solved and still a issue

PS: JJJoseph>>Thunderbird is able to identify junk OK, but it doesn't remove junk from "mail.ru", for example. So all clearly-marked junk from "mail.ru" has to be manually removed. When you click VIEW HEADERS ALL.. what is the information shown? It could be spoofed.

re; Add a junk button to the set of buttons in the header area of an email.

As per your supplied image - right click in the blank area just below the 'Archive' button and click on 'Customise' Then click on 'Restore Default Set' click on 'Done'

Additional: If you select a message that is already marked as Junk - see your supplied image Then the 'Junk' button will not appear because it is not required as the message is already marked as Junk. You would need to select an email that is not marked as junk - just an ordinary good email, then if the Junk button appears you know that this aspect of your Thunderbird is working correctly.

If you see the word 'SPAM' Thunderbird does not mark emails as 'SPAM', if the emails are marked as 'SPAM then read section 'Any mention of SPAM:

Please work through the 'Junk controls' information to make sure your are set up correctly. Additional Info at link above.

When settings up Junk, do the following and in this order:

1. Set up preferences in:

Tools>Account Settings >Junk Settings for the mail account

  • Check the following:
  • Select: Enable adaptive Junk Mail controls for this account
  • Select: specific address books (double check that you have not got unwanted email addresses in your various address books)
  • Do Not select: Trust Junk Mail Headers - leave this for now
  • Select: Move New Junk messages to

If Pop

  • Select: Junk folder on and the appropriate account

If pop set as Global account

  • select Junk folder on Local Folders account.

If IMAP

  • Select : 'Other' and the Junk folder on the imap mail account

Note: You can choose to send to Trash folder, but if some emails marked as Junk, but are not Junk go direct to trash you may miss them or even delete without realising they are good.

Do not set the auto delete after 'x' days just yet until you are sure it is working correctly - you do not want to lose emails that need to be trained as not junk.

These instructions are account specific so please check the Junk Settings for each mail account and check every setting.

  • Click on 'OK'.

2. Set up default settings for Junk.

   Tools> Options >security > Junk tab

note: if you have more than one account and have setup all emails to go to Local folders so that you view everything in one place then do not set up - leave unticked the 'when I mark messages as junk'

  • Select: when I mark messages as junk
  • Select: move them to the accounts 'Junk' folder

Do not bother with marking Junk messages as read because you may need to read and select some as Not Junk - they are then returned to the Inbox in an unread state.

  • Select: enable Junk filter logging - useful if you need to know what the filter is doing at a later point.
  • Click on 'OK'

3. Train the Junk filter

In the begining, for each email, you would need to select whether it is Junk or Not Junk. Remember to check the Junk folder for legit emails and reset them as Not Junk. Soon, the Junk learns your preferences.

If you wish to reset everything and retrain the Junk.

  • Tools> Options >security > Junk tab
  • click on the 'Reset Training Data'
  • then work through the instructions above.

4: Maintain the Junk folder to help prevent any corruption. On a regular basis (daily, weekly - depends on the volumn you get) right click on Junk folder and select 'Empty Junk', then right click on Junk folder and select 'Compact'. If you have not done this already, then I would suggest you do it now.

Action:

  • double checked every setting above for every mail account,
  • check you do not have unwanted email addresses in your various selected address books
  • empty and compact the Junk folder.
  • Close and restart Thunderbird.

Did this move the marked as Junk emails from Inbox? If no: Try this and confirm if it worked.

  • Select the Inbox folder
  • Tools > click on 'Run Junk Mail Controls on folder'.

Christine_R: "When you click VIEW HEADERS ALL.. what is the information shown? It could be spoofed."

I don't get your question. Are you asking that I post the entire header here? It doesn't copy easily, and might need to be typed by hand. As for "it could be spoofed", I'm not sure what to do with that since I'm not an expert.

Mail from "mail.ru" is flagged as spam, and the message at the top says "Thunderbird thinks this message is Junk mail". When Thunderbird automatically removes junk mail to the Junk folder, everything goes, but the junk mail from "mail.ru" stays behind. No other junk mail stays behind, just the mail that comes via "mail.ru"
