I can download Firefox 28 and extract the files but nothing happens after that. I did get it to work, but it only lasted a few minutes and then went back to Firefox 11.

Hi,

I use these commands in the Terminal to upgrade to the latest version (28.0)

Now you can go to Applications > Internet and launch Firefox

Note: For me (I'm running 12.04.4 LTS) I see 2 Firefox instances:

  • Firefox Web Browser
  • Mozilla Build of Firefox

However, launching each of them just launches the latest version. You can verify it's the latest by going to Help > About Firefox

This is the way I do it and it's worked pretty well for me. I run Nightly and Firefox 28 side by side as two differnet profiles.

Hi,

What problems were you having with version 28? Did it crash or what?

I can not get it to update from Firefox 11 to 28.

I followed your instructions, but when I finished it was still Firefox 11.

You can download the newest version, extract it somewhere, and open it via Terminal by running ./firefox

Still stays at Firefox 11.

Make sure Firefox is closed before you run the command. If you're running Firefox and you run the ./firefox command, it'll just open a new window. I should've mentioned this earlier though:

  • You can use the built-in Update Manager to update Firefox and other packages.
    • Go to System > Administration > Update Manager (I think) You're still on the GNOME desktop and I'm running Unity.
  • Is there a reason why you haven't updated Ubuntu? Support for 10.10 was officially ended on 10 April 2012

N.B.

No sure if this could apply. IIRC some early Ubuntu versions especially LTS ones did not upgrade their own build of Firefox, or not beyond a certain Firefox date/version. Possibly the main issue is the unsupported version of Ubuntu.

Personally I usually use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with canonical Aurora channel of Firefox. I also have other Mozilla versions installed.

John,

What PPA do you use for Aurora?
I'm currently using the ubuntu-mozilla-daily for Nightly.
I'm running 12.04.4 LTS. I haven't upgraded because hda-retask-jack will not configure my Beats Audio on 14.04 LTS. Tried the beta, wicked fast.

On a related note:
@John
If the Update Manager or the ubuntuzilla PPA I mentioned above fails to upgrade Firefox, they should just upgrade to a more recent LTS or normal release?

I finally got it to work. Thanks Moses and John. My wife does not like Unity but prefers Maverick Mercat and it has always worked fine except for the updating. Thanks again and again.

It would help other users who are using 10.10 like you if you told us how you got it to work.
