I back up Mozilla regularly--now I am getting a message that either the disc is full (tons of space on it) or I don't have write permission--back up won't work

Does anyone have any thoughts? The back up disc area is only 5% full, so that can't be the issue. Thank you so much.

You should not keep emails you need in the TRash/Deleted folder. This folder can be used as a temporary holding to get back accidentally deleted emails, it is not really a place to hold emails that you do not want to lose. Trash is for unwanted emails. This folder should be emptied and compacted on a regular basis.

You do not say how you are backing up nor what you are backing up.

You do not need to backup the Thunderbird program - this might be the reason for the error message; you need to backup the Thunderbird Profile folder; the two are not in the same location.

Have you closed Thunderbird? If no then close it before creating the backup. (This might be the reason for the error message.) If you have a POP mail account, did you install and use the MozBackup program?

Install Mozbackup Create a backup using the Mozbackup tool. then store a copy of that *.pcv file on an external hardrive or other suitable device.

First: Backup the Profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

Then, move all emails out of the Inbox into suitable folders. The Inbox should be used as an Inbox for incoming mail and be low in email numbers. Please read info on how to maintain a healthy Thunderbird: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

Empty your Deleted and Junk folders,

Then compact all folders... File > Compact folders. Please read info on compacting, what it does and why it is important: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully. I gave these things a try. I had the automatic compaction on, but made it for an even smaller quantity. I made sure my main inboxes (subfolders have lots of e-mails) only had a few e-mails. I emptied my junk mail. I didn't delete my deleted mail, as I refer back to that quite often. I did all this and restarted my computer, and still got the same message.

Could it be that I need to reinstall my backup program? If so, is there anything I need to know about deleting the first version before I reinstall it?

Thank you again for your time. Warm regards, Kara

Thank you--I reinstalled the Mozbackup that I had been using, and this time it worked! I guess the old one got corrupted somehow. Thank you so much Kara
