under privacy I have no check mark in "clear history". I still have no history being recorded. Most visited is always empty too.

I have no history or no most visited info. under the preference tab and privacy tab i have the clear history unchecked. I still have no history ever.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
