The screen is unresponsive. An orange box keeps appearing on the screen. Hardware issues or software? Solution?

Phone: Geeksphone peak. Developers Preview. The screen vibrates when touched but no response is received. An orange box, I assume, a background worker of some sort appears on the screen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello everyone,

Thank you so much for taking the time and the effort to help me. I'm very grateful for that. The thing that worked for me was trying a soft reset by pressing the power button and the volume down button and then restoring to factory settings. I hope that works for anyone who might face the same problem. Thanks again!

Disha.

Hi Disha,

I've never experienced this type of issue with a Firefox OS device, but we can try a few troubleshooting steps.

From what I understand, you are not able to use the phone at all because the screen does not respond to touch. Is this correct? Is there just a responsiveness problem with the screen, or does it also not display correctly?

My first suggestion would be to attempt to reset the phone to factory default, but this may not be possible if the screen is not responsive to touch.

My second suggestion, would be to attempt to flash your phone with version 1.2 or 1.3. You may follow these steps to flash your Geeksphone device:

Please let us know if this solves your problem.

Thanks!!

Hello,

You can try what Ralph said but I've love to try a soft reset quickly first before doing a reset/ flashing the device.

A few questions I have are:
*Did you receive the device in this way?
**Yes: I suggest getting a replacement device
**No: What did you do before and do you have any idea of what could've caused this?

To do a soft reset:

  1. Take the back cover of the phone off.
  2. Take the battery out.
  3. Take the SIM card and microSD card out (if applicable).
  4. Wait 10 seconds.
  5. Put the SIM card and microSD card back in (if applicable).
  6. Put the battery back in.
  7. Put the back cover back on.
  8. Turn the device on.
  9. Check if the issue you were having is still present.

Please report back to us if this solved your problem!

Thank you

The same problem I had after enabling "Screen reader" in the developer options... With this brown box on, swiping the screen did not switch pages anymore, but moved only that brown box from one clickable region of the screen to the next. As I moved my "settings" icon to another than the main page long ago, now I could not reach it anymore and came thus never back to disabling the screen reader.

However, there was a way back without reset'ing my Peak phone. By installing "Firefox OS simulator" (https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/labs/fxos-simulator/) in my desktop PC's firefox, and enabling it to debug also "certified apps" (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Using_the_App_Manager#Debugging_Certified_Apps), I could remotely start up "settings" and maneuver to that developer option and switch it off again.

Bingo!

Hello Andrew,

First of all, I'd like to thank you for your help. To answer your question, no, I did not receive the device this way. It was working quite well initially until the appearance of the box. I have no idea what caused that. Secondly, I performed a soft reset as you had suggested. I'm afraid that complicated things a bit. Now, it has just hung up. Once the phone powers up, after the initial Geeksphone logo, the screen just blanks out. The screen is still live because it is lit up, but the entire phone is unresponsive. It shuts off only after removing the battery. I tried repeating the process multiple times with no change in results. I'd appreciate your help on the matter. Thanks!

Hi Christian,

Thank you for your suggestion. I installed the add-on as you recommended. The problem that I am facing is that I am unable to connect my phone with the App Manager. My phone has blanked out ever since I tried a soft reset and I have been unable to control my phone from the desktop. I'd really appreciate your help on the matter. Thanks!

Hi Disha,

The app manager only works on Firefox OS versions 1.2 or later, so if you have version 1.1 on your phone, the App Manager will not be able to connect to your phone.

Is your phone accessible via ADB or Fastboot? If so, you may be able to flash your phone, which may fix this issue. For more information on using ADB and flashing your Geeksphone device, please take a look at the following article:
