I just upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 and Thunderbird 24.3.0 is running very, very slow. It sometimes stops, then 5 minutes later starts again.

I've used Thunderbird for years and never have had this problem. I run Lightning with my calendar.

I haven't had it crash, just freeze, then start again.

I appreciate any help you can provide. I hate Outlook.

That fixed my problem. Thanks.

Sorry, I can't find anything like On-Access scan properties in McAfee Security Center, or when right-clicking the systray icon. What am I missing? Thanks.

(below copied from the link shown earlier in this thread)

Disable scanning of Thunderbird files and folders (by default McAfee is NOT supposed to scan them): Right click on systray icon "On-Access Scan properties ..." "All processes", "Exclusions" "Exclusions ..." Add the "Thunderbird" and "Thunderbird Profile" folders and subfolders. Folder names must finish with a backslash. Also, if you have customized account locations for mail, exclude your custom folder locations.

I've also had a lot of random freezing of Thunderbird (24.5.0) right after upgrading to Windows 8.1. Having ruled out both Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, I tried disabling Windows Search integration:

Tools → Options → Advanced, General tab, System Integration box, untick "Allow Windows Search to search messages".

This seems to have done the trick. I was getting long hangs during saving drafts, committing to the Outbox, but randomly — I could never trigger a hang, but most e-mails I wrote would incur at least one hang either during autosave or send later (used as part of a dreadful hack to force messages into the Outbox like Outlook so that the compose window goes away on send). These hangs stopped after making that change.

Since I never use Windows Search to find messages anyway, this doesn't concern me.

Thanks. My problem seemed to be related to the McAfee issue mentioned above but I'll take note of this too!
