'save as' redownloads the data

Posted

everbody notice how if you dont cow-down to the mods here, and pretend to worship there replys the threads get locked. Has anybody figured out how to fix the dl issues yet. The question i posted you cannot right click save as on an image, after the image has been dl already to save it FF re-downloads the image again. Noone can produce a config setting that corrects that. so if your paying for data FF is causing you to pay double. while something is DL most of the time the dl stalls. You now cannot pause and resume a dl to get it going again, the old Dl dialogue box had a pause function, the new one 'right-click' shows a pause but its grayed out and does not function FF cannot handle multiple tabs anymore, if you open multiple tabs it freezes FF and you get a slow script error. But the same tabs can be opened in an old version of IE 7, the repeated crashes are well known without a fix, the new version seems to have numerous bugs without fixes, or explanations that you need some add-on instead of a FF function. the mere fact that FF cause double data usage without a fix or explanation is beyond inexcusable. Payinf for double data because of a code error is unbelievable. test i opened IE went to a pg open 3 tabs saved the images, and did the same in FF and it used 3.23 times more data. Every since that Tor / FF debacle when the old versions were declared no good every version of FF since then has had to many errors without fixes that it has became an industry joke. The fact that chrome and IE or better browsers now speaks volumes. I am no code writer, but since that time, every version is so slow and bug prone, that what ever attempt to say face or redemption has been a disaster.

this is the reply To answer your questions here:

I'm not sure I understand this. When I click save image as then try again it works fine for me. Can you clarify what you are trying to achieve?

It is better to use an external Download Manager (DM) if you are on dialup or have an unreliable connection. An external Download Manager offers better support for resuming interrupted downloads than the built-in Firefox DM.

You can use the FlashGot extension to integrate an external Download Manager in Firefox. FlashGot: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/flashgot/

This is most likely the way Firefox is set up on your end. What add-ons are you running since I don't see any listed. I need some more non-personal information from you. Please do the following:

Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting Information from the menu.

Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.

At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

If you need further information about the Troubleshooting information page, please read the article Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

the new version seems to have numerous bugs without fixes, or explanations that you need some add-on instead of a FF function.

I see you have Fx 26 installed and not the latest 27.0.1. See what's new with Firefox in version 27.0.1 http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/27.0.1/releasenotes/

the mere fact that FF cause double data usage without a fix or explanation is beyond inexcusable. Payinf for double data because of a code error is unbelievable. test i opened IE went to a pg open 3 tabs saved the images, and did the same in FF and it used 3.23 times more data.

Double data usage? Are you talking about a smart phone data limit or your RAM usage?

then i got this, Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems. See "Creating a profile":

   https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
   http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

So i replied and they locked the thread, so no answer but theirs could be shown, and shown it didnt work. the fact they did not understand the issue of save as re-dling from the web instead of saving from cache is inexcusable This is the reply It is not brain surgery, the post speaks for itself. if you are on a website and open an image in a new tab to save it, ff dl's it to cache so you can view it in that tab. if you right click to save it "save image as" ff re-downloads the image a second time, it DOES NOT save it from the already downloaded cache version of it. That is double the data usage to get a single image. if it is a 2 mb image, ff uses 2mb to open the tab and view in tab, and then uses another 2 mb to re-save the image. IT DID NOT USE TO DO THAT ON THE OLD VERSIONS. and 27 does it too. No if your internet plan charges you by the mb or gb your wasting data charges on duplicate data, because of a FF code problem. as for the numerous bugs, read the forum, and just like your answer instead of a fix, YOU suggest you use an add-on or other software instead of fixing the issue or default config problem. No-one should have to use a dl manager just because FF wont fix its dl problems. That is the biggest issue these days is the excuses and workarounds instead of fixes. The older FF all had a pause and resume option so even if the off chance it stalled you could stop and start it. now you cant, the pause button is visible but grayed out. (that is on ever persons ff I have seen) home work, friends, not just mine. and there are numerous hits about that on web searches. The ff browser is the software that reads the script, all the new versions have repeated slow script warnings when the browser stalls. that is a browser issue, not a computer, or setting, or website error. FF the browser is reading the script, and the slow script error is a FF issue, with no fix. then you try and say to upgrade again to 27 from 26. The whole issue and problem is FF instead of fixing the bugs just claims upgrade. that's fine but 27 has the same bugs as 26, but FF wont fix a "bug' under 26 so every bug up to that point that has been reported is ignored. FF will only address bugs under 27, but the code for 27 is 99.8% of 26, but all the bugs from 26 and earlier version that are migrated into 27 have to be reported individually AGAIN, and new bug reports made, but by that time there will be a 28 and again nothing will be fixed. you cant just throw out a new version every 3 days and ignore the old bugs and not fix them. FF is just becoming useless, you sure cant dl with it, pics, files, etc. no dl will complete. god help you if you have to dl a zip file. As for the settings, just an excuse. So to prove it, before replying I remove all add ons, reset to default, FF will not dl a 30 mb file. but on the same connection IE did it in under 13 seconds, and chrome 24 seconds. FF failed to complete 3 different times and stalled to the point it froze the browser the final try. That is not any other issue but the browser software and code.

How much more simplier do they want it explained. the issue with them is they did not have an answer, so they lock the thread to keep you from replyimg. Note: that i reset all the defaults and cleared all the addon thus a brand new profile not to mention the new reinstall.

then this

No need to personalize your comments here. We get it - you aren't happy with the Mozilla developers and with Firefox, but there is no need to take it out on the support volunteers.

If the sole purpose if this thread was to provide feedback to Mozilla, please do so here (using the current version of Firefox) - https://input.mozilla.org/en-US/feedback Since I don't see any support questions here, I am locking this thread.

And it was locked so they couldnt be corrected

so here you go, first i did use a new profile, you obviously have never reset to default. that creates a new profile and your old data is saved to your desktop in a file marked "old firefox data" All your add-ons etc are not in the new profile you have to transfer them. I, as i stated went a step further and deleted every add-on etc before resetting so there was nothing to even linger by mistake. The fact that they dont know that is red flag number 3 so far.

the troubleshooting is another excuse, ITS the standard default of Firefox, default settings are all the same. excuse.

and the 'idea' about the bugs not being fixed in 26 is fact. each new version of FF that is rolled out is not a freshly written batch of code, Mozilla takes the complaints and bugs and fixes those in the current version of code and then issues an upgrade with the same code re-written with the patches/fixes in it as a new version. At that point any unaddressed bugs and fixes left outstanding are no longer addressed, ff support will tell you to upgrade and if the issues persist in the new version re-submit a request. That is done so they dont have to take every support request under an old version and research if it has or has not been fixed. That is there standard procedure, so if the issue complain in 26 was not fixed in the 27 roll out, then you get no support to fix the issue, you have to resubmit the entire thing and start from scratch.

Your previous post,

..... was locked by a moderator since it didn't appear to be a support request but rather feedback for Firefox developers. The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers. For problems with moderation actions I would suggest that you post a new thread in /forums/contributors.

If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. (You'll need to update to the latest version of Firefox to submit feedback).

You wrote, The question i posted you cannot right click save as on an image, after the image has been dl already to save it FF re-downloads the image again.

I did find this bug report which seems to describe your issue, but it is unconfirmed at present:

  • Bug 530288 - Cached data is redownloaded when using "save link as"

You could post additional, constructive information to the bug report, if you think it will help developers confirm the bug. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html before posting comments to bug reports.

I would suggest using the latest version of Firefox and a new profile - see Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles to see if the issue is still present. You may also wish to do a clean reinstall of Firefox, for good measure. See the Reinstall Firefox section in this article: Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems

Alternately, you could vote on the bug to keep track of its progress.

About the current options in Firefox to pause and resume downloads, see Find and manage downloaded files under the section, How can I manage my downloaded files?

If you have other issues with Firefox not related to downloading or saving files, I would suggest asking a new question, since the Forum rules and guidelines say,
Create one thread and only one thread for each subject you want to discuss.

yea thanks i found that too, but its from 2011, and that was fixed in the old versions.

now the new versions are doing it as well, and the last to bug reports were for 26 and will not be addressed.

Hopefully someone has figured out a config. setting that fixes it.

and as i have said the new version, 26 and 27 both do it, new profile old profile safe mode, there is no way to reinstall or safe mode it to get it to stop re-downloading.

So it has to be some other answer than that,

A loosely related thread

That thread also relates to download issues. That and related threads may benefit from HelpDesk attention.

Hi worthlesforum,

I will try to comment on some of the general issues you are apparently trying to discuss.

Development Decisions
Questions about development decisions are often considered to be outside he scope of this forum, and developers do not see posts here.

Feature regressions & Addons
If a feature is intentionally removed from Firefox someone often brings out an addon that reverses the feature regressions. So if someone asks on this forum about returning some feature it is; as you say; often suggested that an addon be used.
It would not surprise me to see bugs filed repeatedly asking for reversal of such actions, and again it would not surprise me that such bugs do not get fixed.

Bugs in Unsupported versions
It is true that bugs are not fixed in unsupported versions. You mention

problem is FF instead of fixing the bugs just claims upgrade. that's fine but 27 has the same bugs as 26, but FF wont fix a "bug' under 26 so every bug up to that point that has been reported is ignored. FF will only address bugs under 27, but the code for 27 is 99.8% of 26, but all the bugs from 26 and earlier version that are migrated into 27 have to be reported individually AGAIN,

I do not think that should happen.

My understanding is that the intention is that if a bug occurs and can be shown to affect a current and supported Release it will be considered valid for investigation and potentially fixing. Such a bug ordinarily should not need reporting and filing again for subsequent Firefox versions. Of course bugs may have multiple causes but similar symptoms. A bug may be fixed then a similar one occur.

If we leave out what are probably intentional feature regressions have you got a couple of good examples that demonstrate your observations (Preferably with bug numbers if you happen to have that information.) I can not guarantee it will be discussed properly here, but it would at least be of interest to see examples.

Hi worthlessforum,

Thank you for your honesty. I was taking a look at the bug that was found and was trying to reproduce the issue. These are the steps I took to observe the Save Download as... 1. Open an image in a webpage [assuming this stores it in the cache] 2. Close the session 3. Open the webpage from the suggested web pages generated in the url 4. Click yes and the page loads

Observed in the HTTP: GET http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/missions/sts-113/images/captions/KSC-92PC-0919.html [HTTP/1.1 304 Not Modified 247ms] The character encoding of the HTML document was not declared. The document will render with garbled text in some browser configurations if the document contains characters from outside the US-ASCII range. The character encoding of the page must be declared in the document or in the transfer protocol. KSC-92PC-0919.html GET http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/missions/sts-113/images/tiny/KSC-92PC-0919.gif [HTTP/1.1 304 Not Modified 254ms] GET http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/missions/sts-113/sts-113-patch-tiny.gif [HTTP/1.1 304 Not Modified 265ms] GET http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/images/nasalogo-small.gif

A 304 not modified is the answer a server gives when the cache checks to see if the page is the most updated. This is not reloading the whole image from the server, however most caches do this. Please also try it in web dev tools for other browswers and see if the traffic is the same in those browsers.

However when I right clicked on the cached image page the http headers were: GET http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/missions/sts-113/images/medium/KSC-92PC-0919.jpg [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 909ms] This can be stored in a router, a local dnscache or your computer. This will depend on your network provider.

I did it for a new page as well: http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/missions/sts-113/images/medium/KSC-92PC-2055.jpg and no network get was used, the cache was used.

Screenshot of the web analyzer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5R4.../edit?usp=sharing

Does this also happen when you observe the Save Download As in the Network tool?
